The expansion of impervious areas owing to urbanization has adverse effects on water circulation. The application of low-impact development techniques to solve these problems is gaining popularity. Among others, Permeable pavements are the most widely employed low-impact development techniques. In this study, the dynamic modulus and tensile strength of pervious polymer concrete pavement were evaluated before and after freezing-thawing cycles. A tensile strength test, performed to check the soundness of the pervious polymer concrete, yielded a tensile strength and tensile strength ratio of 0.66 to 0.96 MPa, and 72 to 83%, respectively. The ultrasonic pulse velocity was measured to determine the dynamic modulus according to the freezing-thawing cycles. When 300 freezing-thawing cycles were performed, the dynamic modulus was analyzed to drop to a level of 77~85% of the initial value. The standards for freezing and thawing tests of pervious concrete have not yet been established. It is necessary to develop test standards for freezing-thawing resistance of pervious concretes considering climate change.

Permanent deformation or rutting is a major mode of failure in Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavements. The binder used in the asphalt mixture plays an important role in the rutting resistance performance of the mixture. Currently, the Superpave rutting parameter and a more advanced test called multiple stress creep and recovery (MSCR) are the most widely used tests for rutting characterisation of asphalt binders. However, they both have their own merits and demerits. This study was undertaken to introduce a combined Elastic-Plastic (CEP) parameter as an additional binder rheological rutting parameters. The study also aimed at investigating the applicability and potential of this parameter to supplement the existing binder rheological parameters to characterise the properties of asphalt binder related to HMA rutting performance. Additionally, the correlations of the binder rheological parameters with the asphalt mix rutting parameters generated by the dynamic creep and the dynamic modulus tests were investigated. For the polymer-modified binders, Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) was added to the PG 70-16 binder at two concentration levels (4, and 6% by the mass of the binder). A dense-graded HMA AC 14 was tested in the Dynamic Modulus (DM) and Dynamic Creep (DC) tests for evaluating the rutting performance. The CEP parameter was found to be much more reliable than the traditional G*/sin (δ) and the non-recoverable creep compliance (Jnr) parameters for evaluating the rutting behaviour of polymer modified asphalt binders, evident from better correlations of CEP with the asphalt mix performance. Unlike Jnr, the CEP parameter revealed a wider range of values, which is comparable with asphalt mixture test results.

Before round timber can be profitably used in construction, it needs structural characterization. The visual grading of Eucalyptus grandis poles was integrated with additional parameters developed by multivariate regression analysis. Acoustic velocity and dynamic modulus of elasticity were combined with density and pole diameter in the estimation of bending strength and stiffness. The best models achieved were used to group the visually graded material into qualitative structural classes. Overall, dynamic modulus of elasticity was the best single predictor; and adding density and diameter to the model improved the estimation of strength but not of stiffness. The developed parameters separated the material into two classes with very distinct mechanical properties. The models including velocity as a parameter did not perform as well. The strength grading of Eucalyptus grandis poles can be effectively improved by combining visual parameters and nondestructive measurements. The determination of the dynamic modulus of elasticity as a grading parameter should be preferred over that of acoustic velocity.

To test the acoustic performance of fiber-reinforced composites for replacing wood, an acoustic vibration test method is developed. For evaluation of the test method, composites are manufactured using hemp and ramie embedded in epoxy, through vacuum-assisted resin infusion molding. The effects of the most important factors, i.e., impulse, relative humidity (RH), and specimen thickness, on the acoustic vibration response of the composites are systematically studied. The magnitudes of the impulses, represented by different masses of the dropping balls, seem to have little influence on the shapes of the acoustic vibration curves, although the intensity of the spectra increases as the impulse increases. The RH influences the spectrum shape significantly due to variation in the Young’s modulus and density of the material upon absorption of moisture. The specimen thickness also greatly affects the testing results. The specific dynamic modulus, acoustic radiation damping coefficient, and acoustic impedance change a little as the impulse magnitude and RH change, but decrease substantially as the specimen thickness increases. The specific dynamic modulus can be linearly correlated with the flexural modulus of a material.

In the French high-modulus asphalt mixture design system, the complex modulus of the mixture under the conditions of 15 °C and 10 Hz is taken as the design index. However, in China, the dynamic modulus under the conditions of 15 °C, 10 Hz, 20 °C, 10 Hz and 45 °C, 10 Hz was taken as the stiffness modulus index of high-modulus asphalt mixture. The difference in modulus values between the two systems caused the pavement structure layer to be thicker and the construction cost to be higher in China. In order to find out the appropriate modulus value of high-modulus asphalt mixture suitable for China’s modulus parameter conditions to better carry out the reasonable design and evaluation of high-modulus asphalt mixture in China, the modulus of four types of high-modulus asphalt mixtures under the two systems through the two-point bending complex modulus test of the CRT-2PT trapezoidal beam and the SPT uniaxial compression dynamic modulus test were analyzed in this paper. Under the premise of meeting the stiffness modulus index of the French high-modulus asphalt mixture, the relationship conversion models between the dynamic modulus and complex modulus of high-modulus asphalt mixture under different temperatures were established. According to the conversion models, the design evaluation value range of dynamic modulus suitable for China’s condition was recommended. It is recommended that the dynamic modulus of China’s high-modulus asphalt mixture at 15 °C and 10 Hz is not less than 16,000 MPa, the dynamic modulus at 20 °C and 10 Hz is not less than 14,000 MPa, and the dynamic modulus at 45 °C and 10 Hz is not less than 2500 MPa. Five kinds of high-modulus asphalt mixtures used in actual road engineering were tested to verify the reliability of the recommended dynamic modulus values based on the modulus conversion model, and the results are consistent with the recommended value range of the model.

To reduce the use of aggregates such as limestone and basalt, this paper used steel slag to replace some of the limestone aggregates in the production of SMA-13 asphalt mixes. The optimum content of steel slag in the SMA-13 asphalt mixes was investigated, and the performance of these mixes was evaluated. Five SMA-13 asphalt mixes with varying steel slag content (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) were designed and prepared experimentally. The high-temperature stability, low-temperature crack resistance, water stability, dynamic modulus, shear resistance, and volumetric stability of the mixes were investigated using the wheel tracking, Hamburg wheel tracking, three-point bending, freeze–thaw splitting, dynamic modulus, uniaxial penetration, and asphalt mix expansion tests. The results showed that compared to normal SMA-13 asphalt mixes, the high-temperature stability, water stability, and shear resistance of the SMA-13 asphalt mixes increased and then decreased as the steel slag content increased. All three performance indicators peaked at 75% steel slag content, and the dynamic stability, freeze–thaw splitting ratio, and uniaxial penetration strength increased by 90.48%, 7.39%, and 88.08%, respectively; however, the maximum bending tensile strain, which represents the low-temperature crack resistance of the asphalt mix, decreased by 5.98%. The dynamic modulus of the SMA-13 asphalt mixes increased with increasing steel slag content, but the volume expansion at a 75% steel slag content was 0.446% higher than at a 0% steel slag content. Based on the experimental results, the optimum content of steel slag for SMA-13 asphalt mixes was determined to be 75%.
