The article considers the competition of verbal aspects from a new perspective. Instead of employing the traditional method of demonstrating this phenomenon — an empirical replacement of the aspect of a verb in a phrase with the opposite — the author examines Dostoevsky’s choice between the variants found in different manuscripts of the same text. For the first time, based on a two-component theory of the semantic invariant of a verb type, the aspectual meaning of the selection of a verb aspect is revealed and, as a result of contextual analysis, an artistic interpretation of the selected type is proposed.

Abstract This paper investigates emergent pseudo-coordination in spoken German. In a corpus-based study, seven verbs in the first conjunct are analyzed regarding the degree of semantic bleaching and the development of subjective or aspectual meaning components. Moreover, it is shown that each verb shows distinct tendencies for co-ocurrences, especially with deictic adverbs in the first conjunct and with specific verbs and verb classes in the second conjunct. It is argued that pseudo-coordination is originally motivated by the need for ‘chunking’ in unplanned speech and that it is still prominently used in this function in German, in contrast to languages in which pseudo-coordination is grammaticalized further.

This paper investigates the accuracy of the translation of the Arabic copula kaana (be-past-he) in the holy Quran. The first one hundred usages of kaana are selected for investigation. The examples are exclusively derived from Surat al-baqarah (1) and surat ali?umran (2). The translation under discussion is taken from ‘Holy Quran, CD, 6th ed. Saxir for Computer Programs’ The translation has been checked via back translation, which was compared with the original temporal and aspectual meaning expressed by the usage of kaana. It turns out that the translation of kaana caused confusion rather than understanding. It also seems that most of the inadequacies result from insufficient understanding of the mechanism of tense and aspect in both the Arabic and English languages. Moreover, in most cases, the modal usage of kaana which plays a significant role, is ignored by the translator(s). In addition to back translation carried out by some scholars, the translation has also been checked via ‘Machine Translation’ which shows a real abuse of the original text.

This paper focuses on the aspectual value of the Sino-Japanese suffix -chû ‘in the process of’. It argues that the aspectual meaning and function of -chû differ from those expressed by the continuative aspect marker -teiru, and that these differences may be accounted for by the semantics of -chû. When suffixed to a verbal noun, -chû can only denote a temporary or a momentary activity, whereas -teiru can also denote an habitual and regular activity. When denoting a resultative state, -chû, unlike -teiru, implies a right boundary, and marks the state as temporary. Finally, unlike -teiru, -chû highlights the momentary nature of the event or state in question, so that, depending on the context, it can trigger the readings of ‘opportunity to be seized’ or ‘temporary prohibition’. 

Nous montrons ici que l’aspect exprimé par le suffixe sino-japonais -chû ‘en cours de’ diffère de celui marqué par la forme en -teiru (marqueur d’aspect continuatif), et que ces différences sont dues au sémantisme du suffixe -chû. Quand il suffixe un nom verbal, -chû n’exprime qu’une activité temporaire et momentanée, alors que -teiru peut également marquer une activité habituelle et régulière. L’état résultant exprimé par chû est borné à droite et considéré comme temporaire, à la différence de l’état résultant marqué par -teiru. On constate également avec -chû un phénomène de saillance liée à la nature temporaire de l’intervalle, qui donne naissance suivant le contexte à diverses interprétations  d’occasion à saisir, ou au contraire d’interdiction provisoire d’accès, qui le distinguent aussi de -teiru.

This paper presents the acquisition of Spanish perfective aspect in production and comprehension. It argues that, although young children use perfective aspect to talk about completed events, young children have difficulty in assessing perfective meaning from perfective morphology. This paper proposes that in the process of acquiring aspectual meaning, children use local strategies to decode aspectual meaning from form: when analyzing a completed situation, young children depend on certain learnability factors to correctly assess the entailment of completion of the perfective, namely, their ability to determine if the object of the event measures out the event as a whole or not, and their ability to read the agent’s intentions. When those factors are removed from the situation, young children had difficulty determining the entailment of completion of perfective aspect. This study also suggests that the manner in which aspectual information is conveyed in a language, may play a role on the readiness of the acquisition of the semantic morphology of the language (e.g., verb+object vs. verb+affixes). The results of this study indicate that successful performance on the semantics of Spanish perfective aspect develops around the age of 5-6.

Spanish and typologically related languages are characterized by absence of unaccusativization (Levin & Rappaport Hovav 1995). According to Horrocks & Stavrou (2007), the verb-inflected grammatical aspect explains the absence of unaccusativization. Against this view, the article argues that the phenomenon relates to the typologically privileged role of the Spanish verb lexeme. From a usage-based point of view, absence of unaccusativization is understood as an undeveloped possibility of schematization. Spanish constructions are verb-framed and constructional (schematic) patterns only have a secondary role elaborating on the verb-framed core meaning (Pedersen 2019). Grammatical aspect, it is argued, likewise plays a secondary role making the verbal contribution congruent with the intended aspectual meaning.
