As one of the official languages of the Philippines, English predominantly figures in thedomains of education, government, and the judiciary. This reality has always put English at the top of the linguistic ladder, relegating local languages to lower ranks. This scenario appears to be evident also in the domain of the church. In this paper, I investigate signs posted within the compound of a major Catholic church located in the Philippines in terms of types and language use. Informed by linguistic landscape concepts pioneered by Landry and Bourhis (1997), Spolsky and Cooper (1991), and Ben-Rafael (2009), I analyzed over a hundred signs in the religious linguistic landscape, which I call ‘churchscape’. Findings show that English dominates in the churchscape as a language of communication and language of tourism while local languages such as Filipino and Pangasinan assume a secondary role in the churchscape. This study affords us an interesting view and alternative understanding of multilingualism as a phenomenon through the churchscape in question.

For centuries, women have played the secondary role to man. She was never held in esteem; only a mention about her pathetic status was mentioned here and there. But the advent of science and technology, growth of democratic ideas and impact of modern industrialization and general awareness and conscience among the masses has paved way for the emancipation of women. As per Encyclopedia of Women “women is as much human being as man; as she is equally entitled to develop her abilities, all her abilities, to choose the sort of life she wishes to lead and carry on all the activities and assume all the responsibilities that go to make up human dignity”. The Manusmriti (MS) of Manu is also called Manusamhita or Manavadharmasastra. It is a standard and the most authoritative work on Hindu law and present the normal form of Hindu society and civilization. It is a store house of information on the cultural, social, religious, ethical, educational, political, judicial and geographical life of the period and this is perfectly natural. Manusmriti has been upheld as the ultimate guide to lead a moral life, the digressing of which is to be treated with serious negative sanctions.

Patient seeking orthodontic treatment in the present era comprises of both children and adults, thereby increasing the importance of multidisciplinary approach in orthodontics immensely. The interdisciplinary approach requires active involvement of various specialists like Prosthodontist, Oral and maxillofacial Surgeon, ENT surgeon, Paediatrician, Pedodontist, Endodontist, Periodontist, Audiologist, Physiotherapist etc. A combined interdisciplinary treatment approach will yield a result best suited for the patient as well as clinicians. Orthodontist in such Interdisciplinary treatment approach can play a primary or secondary role. So, the purpose of this article is to briefly summarize interdisciplinary approach for the management of dentofacial problems. Based on the banking and governance literature, the impacts of the audit committee quality on the financial performance of conventional and Islamic banks are mixed, unstable and sometimes contradictory. In this study, we consulted deeply the theoretical foundations of the audit committee quality on the financial performance of conventional and Islamic banks to solve the ambiguity of comparison in a framework of agency theory. Measures of financial performance and audit committee determinants are collected from 30 countries. Under the panel data estimations, data were collected from 112 banks of each type that have published their reports regularly during the period (2010-2019). Overall, we obtained 1120 bank-year observations in each sub-sample. The results showed that the audit committee in conventional banks negatively affected their financial performance. However, in Islamic banks, it revealed a vague impact because of his secondary role.

On 7 September 1191, a fierce battle took place in Arsuf (Palestine) between the Crusaders (marching south towards Jerusalem) led by King Richard the Lionheart and the Ayyubid army commanded by the sultan Saladin. The confrontation lasted for most of the day and terminated with a victory of the Crusaders, proving Richard’s courage as a soldier and his skill as a commander while denting Saladin’s reputation as an invincible warrior. The site (today known as Apollonia) holds the ruins of a Crusader castle perched on a cliff over the sea. We recovered plenty of pottery shards among which we could distinguish those of the Crusaders from those of the Ayyubid army. Extraction of food remnants confirmed that the Crusaders’ diet consisted mostly of pig and sheep meat (together with cheese), with a minimum of carbohydrates (what today would be termed a “ketogenic” diet), whereas the Muslim army consumed mostly carbohydrates (wheat, Triticum durum, Hordeum vulgare), together with fruits and vegetables, with minimal levels of sheep meat and cheese. As a result, the Crusaders’ diet had a positive effect on their slenderness and “cardio”. This might have been why the Ayyubid army lost ca. 10 times more soldiers in Arsuf. Shrewdness of leaders and soldiers’ equipment and willingness to fight are, of course, the main ingredients of victory, but diet too might not have a secondary role and help to tip the balance.

AbstractThe structurally robust biopolymer sporopollenin is the major constituent of the exine layer of pollen wall and plays a vital role in plant reproductive success. The sporopollenin precursors are synthesized through an ancient polyketide biosynthetic pathway consisting of a series of anther-specific enzymes that are widely present in all land plant lineages. Tetraketide α-pyrone reductase 1 (TKPR1) and TKPR2 are two reductases catalyzing the final reduction of the carbonyl group of the polyketide synthase-synthesized tetraketide intermediates to hydroxylated α-pyrone compounds, important precursors of sporopollenin. In contrast to the functional conservation of many sporopollenin biosynthesis associated genes confirmed in diverse plant species, TKPR2’s role has been addressed only in Arabidopsis, where it plays a minor role in sporopollenin biosynthesis. We identified in gerbera two non-anther-specific orthologues of AtTKPR2, Gerbera reductase 1 (GRED1) and GRED2. Their dramatically expanded expression pattern implies involvement in pathways outside of the sporopollenin pathway. In this study, we show that GRED1 and GRED2 are still involved in sporopollenin biosynthesis with a similar secondary role as AtTKPR2 in Arabidopsis. We further show that this secondary role does not relate to the promoter of the gene, AtTKPR2 cannot rescue pollen development in Arabidopsis even when controlled by the AtTKPR1 promoter. We also identified the gerbera orthologue of AtTKPR1, GTKPR1, and characterized its crucial role in gerbera pollen development. GTKPR1 is the predominant TKPR in gerbera pollen wall formation, in contrast to the minor roles GRED1 and GRED2. GTKPR1 is in fact an excellent target for engineering male-sterile gerbera cultivars in horticultural plant breeding.

Having traced in 250 women the relationship between the tendency to form pregnancy scars and the woman's constitution, Seynsche (Zentr. F. Gyn., 1926, no. 27) found that there is a certain relationship between them, namely, in women with a clearly expressed female type, this tendency expressed much more sharply than in male-type women. The number of pregnancies in women does not have a significant effect on scar formation; a secondary role in this process is played by the age when a woman has her first birth.

AbstractCancer cells are able to escape immune surveillance by upregulating programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1). A key regulator of PD-L1 expression is transcriptional stimulation by the IFNγ/JAK/STAT pathway. Recent studies suggest that hypoxia can induce PD-L1 expression. As hypoxia presents a hallmark of solid tumor development, hypoxic control of PD-L1 expression may affect the efficacy of cancer immunotherapy. This study aims to explore the hypoxic regulation of PD-L1 expression in human melanoma, and its interaction with IFNγ-induced PD-L1 expression. Analysis of the cutaneous melanoma dataset from the cancer genome atlas revealed a significant correlation of the HIF1-signaling geneset signature with PD-L1 mRNA expression. However, this correlation is less pronounced than other key pathways known to control PD-L1 expression, including the IFNγ/JAK/STAT pathway. This secondary role of HIF1 in PD-L1 regulation was confirmed by analyzing single-cell RNA-sequencing data of 33 human melanoma tissues. Interestingly, PD-L1 expression in these melanoma tissues was primarily found in macrophages. However, also in these cells STAT1, and not HIF1, displayed the most pronounced correlation with PD-L1 expression. Moreover, we observed that hypoxia differentially affects PD-L1 expression in human melanoma cell lines. Knockdown of HIF1 expression indicated a minor role for HIF1 in regulating PD-L1 expression. A more pronounced influence of hypoxia was found on IFNγ-induced PD-L1 mRNA expression, which is controlled at a 952 bp PD-L1 promoter fragment. These findings, showing the influence of hypoxia on IFNγ-induced PD-L1 expression, are relevant for immunotherapy, as both IFNγ and hypoxia are frequently present in the tumor microenvironment.

Their spectacular architecture, often designed by the same star architects, obeys the general rules of globalized urban planning, acts as an indicator of urbanity, supports culturally driven urban renewal and attracts mass tourism. However, in this connection music plays a secondary role.
