This case study examines the impact of online reservation systems and e-commerce on the travel industry. Two questions are examined: 1. How can competitive advantage be obtained from the exploitation of new information technologies—in particular, e-commerce technologies? 2. How has the role of travel agents changed because of the new information technologies being used to achieve competitive advantage in the air travel industry? Initial discussion concerns the impact of the American Airlines SABRE system, as this has often been touted as giving American Airlines first-mover advantage in the industry. The wider impact of remote-access, computerized reservation systems, or Global Distribution Systems, and e-commerce access to online reservations in the travel industry is analyzed, using Porter’s five-force model of industry competitive forces, to understand how the travel industry has shaped and has been shaped by information systems. The case study concludes with a comparison of the impact of information technologies between the U.S. and European travel industries. It concludes that technology alone does not affect the roles of industry players, but the development of winning technologies exploits structural factors in the environment. Constant evolution of strategic information systems is critical to producing competitive advantage, but opportunism also plays a strong role.

For a solution to the family business definition dilemma, we propose the application of a scale that assesses the extent and the quality of family influence via the measurement of three dimensions: Power, Experience, and Culture. The Family Influence on Power, Experience, and Culture (F–PEC) scale is tested rigorously, utilizing a sample of more than 1,000 randomly selected companies, through the application of exploratory and confirmatory factor analytic techniques. The scale demonstrates high levels of reliability. F–PEC has been applied in a number of studies, contributing to theory development, particularly in terms of the impact of family influence on distinct resources, and as a source of competitive advantage.

This paper examines the case of Nokia as a player of the mobile communication industry and provider of mobile communication system: Mobile handsets (consumer goods) and mobile networks (CoPS). Our aim is to analyze the impact of strategic management and dynamic capability developed by a firm of such an industry, which supports the entire system and manages inter-industry differences of consumer goods and CoPS. Recent convergence among technologies has raised competition among firms. Achieving and sustaining competitive advantage in this converging market is therefore possible by identifying threats and then developing strategies and capabilities to resolve them. This article concludes by examining how the firm can achieve its competitive advantage.

This study aims to investigate the relationships among the variables of servant leadership, employee loyalty, employee satisfaction, and employee performance in the context of a family business in Indonesia. This study applies quantitative approach with empirical evidence obtained from the entire employees of PT. Garuda Totalindo Jaya, a family-owned supplier spare part company as the case study.  For the analysis technique, this study uses Partial Least Square (PLS) Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) as a program to run the collected data from 71 respondents during the period of July 2019. The findings of the study show that servant leadership has positive impact on employee loyalty and employee satisfaction; employee satisfaction has positive impact on employee loyalty; and employee loyalty has positive impact on employee performance. This study expands the knowledge on human resources in the context of family business in Indonesia. It should be beneficial for both researcher and also the company itself. Moreover, it can give another exposure of the future research to study more variables in term of leadership.

This chapter intends to have answer the questions: How did Ian Smith structure his government and economy and survive sanctions for sixteen years (1965-1979) and become innovative? Why, under almost similar conditions, did Robert Mugabe fail to bring the economy do its toes? In cases, what was the role of knowledge societies and what role did they play to bridge the gap between society and them towards meaningful development? The study uses desktop review as the basis of getting data and information useful in building this theoretical case study of Zimbabwe in the period 1965 to 2018. The robustness of an economy under a stringent economic environment is a function of its ability to tap and harness the prowess of its knowledge societies. It is recommended that strong links between the private, public, and knowledge sectors are required and this must happen in an environment with trust, transparency, accountability, rule of law, and commitment translating into a powerful connubio for transformation.

This study seeks to analyze the factors causing organizational silence and the impact of this on the sustainable competitive advantage of organizations, The researchers used the descriptive approach, being the best approach from the researchers' point of view, to clarify the relationship between the research variables and the achievement of the study objectives, The Electric Industries Company was chosen to understand the reality of organizational silence and analyze what is required in order to make the necessary recommendations that can contribute to sustaining the company's competitive advantage and reducing the phenomenon of organizational silence and its effects. This study is the first comprehensive empirical study to examine the relationship between the family business and the firm’s performance in Uzbekistan. In this research, we investigate the relationship between family firms and financial performance using enough extensive unbalanced panel data from 2012 through 2015 on 3148 non-banking/non-government firms. Moreover, we analyze the impact of tax cut policy on SMEs, including family firms from a case study of Uzbekistan by using the difference-in-difference estimator. These two will be a major contribution to the family business study field in Uzbekistan.

In the paper, the issue of assessment of strategic decisions in the company is approached, while indicating their impact on the implementation of modern technological solutions and the methods for their financing. The study is divided into two basic parts, namely theoretical and empirical. In the theoretical part, the essence of the strategy of the company is depicted, taking into account the impact of strategic decisions on the changes in the adopted strategy of the enterprise based on the literature studies. The considerations presented in the empirical part include the results of the research conducted in the multinational chemical company. The objective of the study is to learn and assess the relationships between the implementation of modern technological solutions and the effectiveness of strategic decisions on the methods for their financing. The research methods applied to accomplish the objective are literature studies, a case study and the following techniques related to analysis are used: the analysis of return on investment, and the analysis of financial leverage effect. The issue of assessment of strategic decisions is important and up-to-date due to its impact on the continuity of business operations and maintaining a competitive advantage on the market. This study is an attempt to fill the observed research gap regarding the relationships between the implementation of modern technological solutions and the effectiveness of strategic decisions on the methods for their financing.
