The study was conducted in four betel leaf growing areas, namely Barisal, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Kustia district during 2013-14 to assess the cultivation practices, physical productivity, profitability, and to explore the constraints to betel leaf cultivation. The study has been designed to investigate the economics of betel leaf production considering intensive cultivated areas for recent information in Bangladesh. From each district, two upazilas were selected considering the concentration of betel leaf growers and easy access. Also from each upazila, two blocks and from each block 20 farmers were selected with the consultation of Upazila Agriculture Officer and Sub Assistant Agriculture Officer. The study revealed that betel leaf cultivation was profitable in the study areas, although BCR in the first and second years was below one which was due to high initial cost. The highest yield and gross return of betel leaf cultivation were in the fifth year. The benefit cost ratio was found highest in 6-10 year followed by 5th and 11-15 year. The benefit cost ratio at 12%, 15% and 20% rate of interest were 1.27, 1.25 and 1.21 respectively. Internal rate of return (IRR) was calculated 62% in current situation, IRR 37% was found by 10% decrease of return and 39% by 10% increase of cost. The problems like leaf rot disease, high price of boroj materials, low price of betel leaf, high price of oilcake, etc. were facing by the betel leaf farmers.Bangladesh J. Agril. Fish growth is influenced by several factors, one of which is feed. To overcome the high price of feed, the cultivators need to find alternative raw materials as a substitute for fish meal. One source of animal protein that can be a substitute for fish meal is mas snail flour (Pomacea caniculata). The purpose of this study is to know the benefits of snail pests as a source of raw materials of fish feed, knowing the best formulation for fish feed and to determine which protein content is best in fish feed. The experimental design used was Completely Randomized Design (RAL) consisting of 5 treatments with 3 replications. From the research results can be seen that the best formulation is the C treatment of 50% fish meal and 50% golden snail flour, with the highest protein content of 34.26%. Keywords: Feed, snail mas, formulation, and protein.

Recent changes in feed, livestock and fertilizer prices as well as breeding and agronomic practice developments have created substantial interest in their implications on profitable dairy farm cropping programs. The movement in soybean oil meal prices from under $100/ton in early 1972 to over $400/ton in the summer of 1973 increased the interest in alternatives to soybean oil meal. Dairymen searched for feed ingredients which were relatively cheap per unit of protein. As a consequence, interest in the protein content of alfalfa as influenced by variety, harvesting systems, and method of storage has been substantial in the past few months. Although soybean oil meal prices are expected to drop below the peak levels, the issues raised by the high price levels during 1973 need to be examined.

The study was conducted in three betel leaf growing districts, namely Noakhali, Rajbari and Khulna during 2015-16 to assess the agronomic practices, profitability and to explore the constraints to betel leaf cultivation. The study revealed that betel leaf cultivation was profitable, although benefit cost ratio (BCR) in the first and second year were below one due to high investment cost and low yield. The highest yield and gross return were received by the farmers in the fourth year. The BCR was found highest in fourth year followed by third year and fifth year. The BCR at 12%, 15% and 20% rate of interest were 1.16, 1.15 and 1.14, respectively. IRR was 59% in current situation, 42% by 5% decrease of return and 52% by 5% increase of cost. The result indicated that betel leaf cultivation was profitable under changing situation of sensitivity analysis. Farmers faced some constraints like leaf rot disease, high price of boroj materials, non-availability of modern variety, low price of betel leaf, high price of oilcake, vine died, lack of capital, etc. Therefore, breeders should take initiative to develop high yielding varieties of betel leaf and pathologist may conduct research on betel leaf for controlling diseases.Bangladesh J. Maize is one of the most important crops worldwide and also in Hungary, it can be utilized for multiple purposes: as a feedingstuff, for human nutrition and for industrial processing. In the last decades, the per ha yield of maize varied greatly in Hungary, between 2004 and 2006, it was 6.82-7.56 t/ha, while in 2007, it was only 3.6 t/ha. Resulting from this, the price of maize became 2-2.5 times higher. The high price hinders bioethanol production. The largest per ton amount of bioethanol, 387 l, can be produced from maize. In addition to its classical utilization as feed and food, the industrial use (especially for bioethanol production) of maize is increasin. For industrial production, a new production technology is needed. I tested and selected hybrids appropriate for this purpose and set up fertilization and plant density experiments. The experiment were set up on chernozem soil in 2007.The applied fertilization treatment was N 120, P2O5 80 uniformly, and five different dosages of potassium: K2O 0, K2O 100 (KCl), K2O 100 (Kornkáli), K2O 200 (KCl), K2O 200 (Kornkáli) kg/ha active ingredient. The applied plant densities were 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 thousand plants/ha.The yield of maize hybrids in the fertilization experiment ranged between 10.53 – 14.62 t/ha. Both regarding the form and dosage, 100 kg/ha Kornkáli proved to be the best potassium treatment. Regarding the inner content parameters, the highest starch content in the average of treatments was obtained for the hybrid PR36K67: 73.57%, and its yield was also the highest, so this hybrid proved to be the most suitable for bioethanol production. The highest protein content was observed for the hybrids KWS 353 (12.13%), which can be favourable for feeding purposes. Most of the hybrids gave the highest yield at 80 thousand plants/ha plant density, however, hybrids PR36K67 and Mv Tarján achieved the highest yield at 90 thousand plants/ha.In bioethanol production, the selection of a high-yielding hybrid with high starch content, a slight reduction of N, increase of potassium, the application of the highest plant densities of the optimum interval, harvest at full maturity (when starch content is the highest compared to protein content) are of great importance.

Abstract Background. In these last years there is a growing sensibility of public opinion towards pet animal, that involves also an in increasing attention on their nutrition, seen as a way to guarantee welfare. However, it is difficult for the consumer to understand the quality of a product because label information is not always clear to the consumer. The aim of the study is to identify through a survey the pet food characteristics that are seen as quality indicators for pet owners. Results. In total 935 surveys were collected. Descriptive statistic showed a higher percentage of female owners (61.8%) among pet food buyers. Participants were divided almost equally between dogs owners (39.4%), cats owners (30.8%) or both dogs and cats owners (29.8%). A quarter of owners (25.5%) asked for advice to veterinary on which pet food to buy and about a third (30.4%) trusts in web sites of major brands, giving both of them an higher responsibility in providing information to the buyer. “Contain natural ingredients” was the characteristic with the highest score (4.3 on 5), confirming nowadays market trends. Correspondence analysis for age showed that older owners (>65 y) put more attention on costs, with low emphasis on food appearance, animal satisfaction and fecal quality. Younger owners (<35 y) put more attention on positive influence on animal feces, high percentage of protein, presence of recyclable packaging and less attention at food appearance, smell and animal satisfaction. Appearance, smell, higher cost and some label indication (protein content, presence of fresh meat, low grains content) are relevant for consumers buying wet pet food. Some differences are showed between owners of different animal species. Cat owners give more importance to appearance, smell and production site, dog owners focus on protein content, presence of meat as a first ingredient and higher cost. Conclusions. Italian pet food buyers, considered as the most important quality indicators the presence of natural ingredients, while the least important was the high price. Information from this survey can help the pet food companies to identify the factors that influence the perceived quality of the products by dog and cat owners.
