This study focuses on the characterization of morphological and anatomical traits of Orthosiphon stamineus which belongs to the Lamiaceae family. Orthosiphon stamineus, better known as “Misai Kucing” or “cats whiskers” by the locals, contained active phenolics compounds such as flavanoids. Despite its wide usage as a medicinal plant, information regarding Orthosiphon stamineus specific developmental stages is relatively scarce. Furthermore, to date, no anatomical data of this plant is available. Therefore, this study aims to systematically identify the developmental stages and its anatomy which may provide more insight to its medical application. The result showed some distinct morphological and anatomical characteristics. In the morphological study, it was observed that Orthosiphon stamineus is a herbal shrub with well-developed creeping rootstock. The leaves are simple, green, and arranged in opposite pairs. The stem is approximately 28 cm in height at the stage (12 days). The flowers have long wispy stamens shaped with pale purple color. In anatomical study, the cross sections of the stem for tow stage (32) and (62) days of this plant were examined. All the detailed systematic study of this plant has not worked earlier.

<p>The aim of this paper is investigating the micromorphological properties of fruits and seeds in the food and medicinal plant <em>Momordica charantia</em> L. (Cucurbitaceae). A detailed anatomical description on cross-sections of immature fruits and seeds is reported for the first time.</p><p>The fruit is characterized by a thin epicarp, a multi-layered mesocarp and by an inconspicuous endocarp. The seed-coat displays a pattern of organization in five tissues. These endomorphic features were compared and discussed with the results of previous investigations on other representatives of the genus <em>Momordica</em>. Since the structure of seed-coat is considered diacritical in the taxonomy of the genus, this report may offer a set of additional character useful for the characterization of the genus.</p>

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is close to be accepted as a production technique (Additive Manufacturing). However, one problem limiting employment of SLS for additive manufacturing in a wide-ranging industrial scope is the narrow variety of applicable polymers.In the present work, a thermoplastic semi-crystalline polyimide powder was synthesized.. The shape, size and fractional composition of such powder were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. As a result, polyimide powders with a fairly narrow particle size distribution were formed. On the basis of the polyimide powder, samples were obtained in the form of films by the method of selective laser sintering (SLS). The mechanical properties of these samples were investigated depending on a laser energy density. The morphological study of the films cross-sections showed that monolithic sample having insignificant pores and irregularities in the structure was formed

This study aimed to carry out morphoanatomical, histochemical and phytochemical analysis of leaves and stems of Tetrapterys multiglandulosa Cav. (Malpighiaceae), a native plant responsible for abortion and sudden death in beef cattle. Plant specimens underwent anatomical study, in which leaves and stems were dried and ground with aqueous and ethanol extracts subjected to histochemical and phytochemical analysis. Anatomical observation of vegetative organs detected the presence of simple columnar cells in the adaxial epidermis, palisade mesophyll, parenchyma with a layer of cells and paracitic type stomata. Stem cross-sections presented circular section, single layer (uniseriate) epidermis with thick cuticle and Malpighi’s trichomes, the phelogen was in differentiation. The cortex showed angular collenchyma, parenchyma with exogenous channels and druse shaped calcium oxalate crystals. Phytochemical tests of aqueous and ethanol extracts of leaves and stems indicated the presence of phenolic compounds, tannins, flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids and cardiotonic heterosides. Potentially phytotoxic secondary metabolites evidenced in the leaves and stems, including saponins and cardiotonic heterosides were correlated with clinical signs observed in intoxicated animals.

Abstract Background Although extensive breeding efforts are ongoing in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.), the average yield is far below the theoretical potential. Tillering is an important component of sugarcane yield, however, the molecular mechanism underlying tiller development is still elusive. The limited genomic data in sugarcane, particularly due to its complex and large genome, has hindered in-depth molecular studies. Results Herein, we generated full-length (FL) transcriptome from developing leaf and tiller bud samples based on PacBio Iso-Seq. In addition, we performed RNA-seq from tiller bud samples at three developmental stages (T0, T1 and T2) to uncover key genes and biological pathways involved in sugarcane tiller development. In total, 30,360 and 20,088 high-quality non-redundant isoforms were identified in leaf and tiller bud samples, respectively, representing 41,109 unique isoforms in sugarcane. Likewise, we identified 1063 and 1037 alternative splicing events identified in leaf and tiller bud samples, respectively. We predicted the presence of coding sequence for 40,343 isoforms, 98% of which was successfully annotated. Comparison with previous FL transcriptomes in sugarcane revealed 2963 unreported isoforms. In addition, we characterized 14,946 SSRs from 11,700 transcripts and 310 lncRNAs. By integrating RNA-seq with the FL transcriptome, 468 and 57 differentially expressed genes (DEG) were identified in T1vsT0 and T2vsT0, respectively. Strong up-regulation of several pyruvate phosphate dikinase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase genes suggests enhanced carbon fixation and protein synthesis to facilitate tiller growth. Similarly, up-regulation of linoleate 9S-lipoxygenase and lipoxygenase genes in the linoleic acid metabolism pathway suggests high synthesis of key oxylipins involved in tiller growth and development. Conclusions Collectively, we have enriched the genomic data available in sugarcane and provided candidate genes for manipulating tiller formation and development, towards productivity enhancement in sugarcane.
