The system of Indonesian Gayo culture has spiritual dimension of value and virtuous character (akhlâq al-karîmah) orientation. Such cultural values form the relationship of living together based on the principles of Islamic shariah. This paper is aimed at analyzing and reconstructing Gayo cultural values perceived to be relevant with Islamic teaching. The author finds that the values of Gayo culture that includesmukemel (low hearted and honor),setie (faithful),semayang/gemasih (affection), mandate, genap mupakat (consolidation), alang tulung beret berbantu (helpful), bersikemelen (competitive) have spiritual values for Gayo society. Such value systems according to the author run parallel with the teachings of Islam. The synergy of Islam and the cultural values of Islam is finally hoped to be capable of producing perfect man oral-insân al-kâmil within Gayo society. And for this to be realized, there should be a more serious attempt to implement such cultural values at the practical level.

Kata Kunci: Nilai budaya, pembangunan, Gayo, Islam

This chapter examines Merata Mita’s Mauri, the first fiction feature film in the world to be solely written and directed by an indigenous woman, as an example of “Fourth Cinema” – that is, a form of filmmaking that aims to create, produce, and transmit the stories of indigenous people, and in their own image – showing how Mita presents the coming-of-age story of a Māori girl who grows into an understanding of the spiritual dimension of the relationship of her people to the natural world, and to the ancestors who have preceded them. The discussion demonstrates how the film adopts storytelling procedures that reflect a distinctively Māori view of time and are designed to signify the presence of the mauri (or life force) in the Māori world.

The point of judicial recusal is at once obvious and elusive. The idea of a partial judge immediately grates on our sense of fairness. Almost invariably, the normative basis of judicial impartiality is traced to what is described as ‘natural justice’;1 specifically the celebrated maxims of nemo iudex in causa sua2 and audi alteram partem.3 But the relationship of this moral bedrock to the exigencies and settled practices of constitutional adjudication is far from straightforward. This article will focus on the implications of the latter principle – perhaps best translated as a standard of judicial open-mindedness regarding the subject matter of a dispute. Despite its moral immediacy, there are serious theoretical objections, best described as ‘realist,’ to an expansive conception of judicial open-mindedness. Likewise, at a practical level, the institution of the dissenting opinion can be seen as diluting the duty to keep an open mind, at least in jurisdictions such as the US where judges are expected to exhibit relatively little deference towards previous decisions in which they were outvoted.

To successfully manage a crisis in sports, it is necessary to examine the public’s emotions and other emotion-related responses. Without this knowledge, an organization will likely be disconnected from the needs of the public. Inspired by the key constructs in the integrated crisis mapping model, this study examined emotion, coping, and responsibility attribution through a content analysis of tweets during the Larry Nassar scandal involving Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics. This study analyzed a sample of 3,088 tweets generated by the public several days following the sentencing of Larry Nassar. The findings had both theoretical and practical implications. Theoretically, the findings provided an extension of emotions examined and suggested ways in which the model could be expanded to accommodate varied crisis situations. Furthermore, the study revealed important findings regarding levels of attributions and the relationship of the public’s emotions and attribution of responsibilities. On a practical level, the findings offered tangible suggestions for sports communication managers when developing appropriate strategies and tactics considering public sentiments such as emotions, coping strategies, and attributions on social media.

This article explores the relationship of desire and distance in Kaija Saariaho's Lonh (1996) for soprano and electronics. The subject matter of Lonh is desire and romantic pleasures, anchored to feminine subjectivity, represented on stage by a soprano singer. Electronics provide the environmental sounds and amplify the singer's voice. Through Lonh looms a medieval song in the Occitan language, ‘Lanquan li jorn son lonc en mai’ by Jaufré Rudel, a famous troubadour in twelfth-century Provence. Saariaho reverses the narrative convention of love stories by presenting the most intimate encounter at the very beginning. In their succeeding encounters, the lovers move further away from each other. Similarly, in the course of Lonh the distance to Jaufré's song also increases. Luce Irigaray's concepts of love are used for an analysis of the relationship of the loving pair. By the end of Lonh the borderlines of speaking, singing, electronics, language and music collapse in Barthesian jouissance (bliss). The electronic technology in Lonh enables the re-investiture of cultural values, and the construction of flexible identities, crossing boundaries between the self and the other.

This study examined the relationship of organizational hierarchy and aspects of cultural values within a single large professional services firm. Four levels were considered: partners, managers, professional field staff, and secretarial support staff. The importance, presence, and gap between importance and presence of ten cultural values served as dependent variables. The highest and lowest hierarchical levels had more favorable opinions on the importance and presence of these cultural values. Implications for service to clients are drawn.
