<p><strong>Abstrak:</strong> Artikel ini mengkaji persepsi mahasiswa Adam Mickiewicz of University tentang Islam di Indonesia. Pengetahuan menjadi variabel yang berperan dalam mempersepsikan Islam di Indonesia melalui proses perkuliahan BIPA. Melalui keterampilan berbahasa Indonesia, mahasiswa ini memiliki kemampuan memperoleh informasi yang pada akhirnya membentuk pengetahuan tentang Islam Indonesia. Kombinasi antara pengetahuan dan bahasa inilah yang menjadikan ide dan gagasan mereka tentang Islam di Indonesia, baik lisan maupun tulisan, dapat terbaca dan dianalisis oleh penulis. Secara implisit ancangan analisis wacana kritis digunakan sebagai kerangka untuk mengembangkan tulisan ini. Pendekatan ini menempatkan teks berbahasa tidak dalam kerangka interpretif namun lebih bersifat kontekstual.</p><p><strong>Abstract: Islamophobia Discourse and Perceptions of Indonesian Islam Through Language Studies among Polish Students</strong>. This article analyzes the perception of Adam Mickiewicz of University students about Islam in Indonesia. Knowledge becomes a variable that plays an important role in perceiving Islam in Indonesia through BIPA lecture process. With Indonesian language skills, this student has the ability to obtain information that ultimately forms the knowledge of Indonesian Islam. The author analyzes the combination of knowledge and language both oral and written that he claims to have contributed to the creation of ideas as well as ideas about Islam in Indonesia. The Critical Discourse Analysis is implicitly used as a framework for developing this paper. This approach places language texts not in an interpretive framework but rather in a more contextual character.</p><p><strong>Kata Kunci:</strong> Islamophobia, Islam Indonesia, mahasiswa Polandia</p>

Abstract Nigerian media reports on herdsmen’s violence present dehumanised images of a slaughterhouse in which farmers are represented as animals being slaughtered by herders. Using a critical discourse analysis and appraisal framework, with a focus on the systems of attitude and graduation, this paper critically examines media representation of herdsmen’s violence as “butchering” in the form of carnism. Analysis reveals that carnist representation is reinforced through death-dealing socio-cognitive labelling, attitudinal lexicalisation and strands of carnism. Also, using attitude and graduation resources, a one-directional and horrific image is painted. The study concludes that the creation as well as consumption of such scary news cultivates cognitive prejudices and stereotypes.

I intend to examine the linguistic strategy used by ISIS as a means through which it creates the concept of the Muslim Ummah, which seeks to emphasize the unity of an international Muslim community based off the power of Islam. I apply a Critical Discourse Analysis for the study of Baghdadi's sermon on 4 July 2014 where he declared the establishment of the Caliphate and himself as the Caliph. Baghdadi's discourse creates a new communal identity from a Muslim populace who may have felt marginalized due to their religion in their countries of residence. It is through this discourse that he structures the Ummah loyal to the Caliphate in two ways: a) by summoning Islam to create a singular global Muslim body and the establishment of a Caliphate; and b) the structuring of an indiscriminate opponent, one that conflicts with the “camp of Islam”. The method of convincing and generating consent – of institutionalizing jihad - goes beyond propaganda; it necessitates the formation of an entirely novel lexicon, a narrative that fosters support while concurrently quashing any singular qualms.

AbstractDiscourses on terror have been encrypted in the events of 9/11 in 2001 perhaps more than any single event since the end of the Cold War. Even though these discourses are projected as a global phenomenon, very few studies have analysed how they are framed by non-U.S. actors, especially by al-Qaeda and to some extent al-Shabaab. An analysis of discourses of terror by al-Qaeda is invaluable in determining how the U.S. is represented from the perspectives of the “other.” Using Critical Discourse Analysis as an analytic and interpretive framework, this article analyses al-Qaeda declassified intelligence reports captured by the U.S. in order to establish a view of “terror” from an al-Qaeda insider perspective. The article argues that there is a convergence of ideas and overlap in terms of the discourses of terror between the U.S. and al-Qaeda, which is ironic because of the firm distinction made by the U.S. government between “us” – the civilized nations – and “them” – the barbarian, evil murderers of innocent civilians.

The use of textbooks in the EFL classroom is a trend that shapes the way language teachers teach and how students learn. Teachers design and use a great deal of materials for teaching and developing foreign language skills, but in terms of culture, they usually prefer to trust publishing houses for the cultural content included in their textbooks. What we do not know is that most of these textbooks promote hegemony and standardization of cultures under the conscious or unconscious ideology of the colonization of being. Teachers need to learn how to analyze and unveil the hidden mechanisms of colonization that are portrayed in some textbooks, a process which can be carried out through the use of Critical Discourse Analysis.

Abstract This paper presents a research of critical discourse analysis (critical discourse analysis / CDA), a new school of discourse analysis that examines power relations and inequality in the language. CDA explicitly aims to incorporate the theoretical-social study into discourse analysis and encourage social commitment and interventionism into research. The main programmatic features and aspects of the CDA study are discussed, with an emphasis on efforts towards theorizing by one of Leading academics CDA, Norman Fairclough. Other parts of reviewing the origins and development of disciplines CDA, also mentioned some recent criticism appeared and put the CDA on the broader picture of a new critical paradigm that evolved in a number of (sub) discipline-oriented language. In this critical paradigm, topics such as ideology, inequality, and power are the main issues, and many academics are productively seeking to incorporate theoretical-social study into language studies.

The article presents a part of research focused on teacher education in Poland. Becoming a teacher is a process that takes place in the space of universities and schools as educational entities in which two discursive communities meet. The distinctness and the hermetic character of the communities are an epistemological barrier to the creation of cooperation, which is essential for effective teacher education. The research is directly related to the need to introduce changes in this area and to define the conditions for these changes to occur. The purpose of the research is to establish how an institution which trains teachers functions. In order to achieve this goal, the author reconstructs a set of rules of discursive practices which were revealed during a group discussion among the students. In the research, a reconstructive formula based on critical discourse analysis was adopted. On the basis of the analysis, recommendations for the practice of teacher education are offered.

This study aims to describe the application through the Fairclough Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model on insurance advertising and its effectiveness in argumentative writing learning. The research method is a mixing qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative methods are applied by using the Fairclough's CDA model that applies micro, meso, and macro dimensions. Quantitative methods are used to measure the effectiveness of Fairclough CDA modelon argumentative writing learning. The results showed the use of language, connectivity, and hegemony with future concerns caused by lifestyle and social demands, and calamity with phrases as a form of the claim that needs to be made a counterclaim. This strongly supports the argumentation content.  The Mann Whitney U test shows significance value of 0,000 is ≤0.005. Thus, it can be concluded that Fairclough CDA modelapplication of learning with CDA is effective for improving learning outcomes in argumentative writing.

This paper disrupts the Euro Americans&rsquo; environmental colonialist discourse which involves the practices of racist policies that result in the relocation of the Native Americans to a confinement called reservation. More specifically, it discusses this relocation which is termed as zoning as a dilemma for the Natives because this practice by the Euro Americans, which is primarily involves their economic agenda, not only restricts the Natives to their reservation and denies life opportunities for them but puts the responsibility of their plight on themselves. A qualitative content analysis, the research explores this idea in Linda Hogan&rsquo;s Mean Spirit in the light of the joint critique of environmental racism and critical discourse analysis. Linguistically, the study applies critical discourse analysis focusing on van Dijk&rsquo;s concept of discourse and manipulation. The analysis reveals that the discursive and cognitive strategies employed by the Euro Americans for the zoning of the Natives help the former rationalize and legitimize their environmental colonial practices. The discursive process first involves the creation of &ldquo;othering&rdquo; and then the tactful presentation of this &ldquo;othering&rdquo;. The study also highlights the counter actions taken by the Natives on the basis of the same or similar strategies as have been employed against them, to resist their zoning.
