This paper is to expound some note on philosophy in terms of contrast between idealism and realism in its various shades of grey. Included is its shade in (certain) Islamic perspective. The methods of analysis is that of Wittgenstenian language games (WLG) which proceed from several well-known statements or examples to dense possible meaning of them. The WLG is considered fruitful for the purpose of grounding theory and practice science-technology-engineering-math (STEM) based curriculum development and implementation. The subject matter discussed is how idealism and realism is expressed in the three three-generations of philosopher Socrates-Plato-Aristotle (SPA), Schopenhauer-Nietszsche-Foucault (SNF) and Hegel-Marx-Habermas (HMH). After mentioning an Islamic expression on idealism and realism as contrast of jabariyatism and mutazilitism, then it is time to see if Universitas Terbuka (UT) specifically and all (Indonesia) educational establishments in general have some lesson learned from that note on philosophy. In UT, in line mostly with Islamic expressions, idealism and realism is seen as contrast of content-based vs competency-based approach to curriculum development and implementation.

Sanford Schane’s monograph French Phonology and Morphology, published in 1968, was the first extensive treatment of that subject in a generative framework. Although its merits and faults have been discussed at length in reviews, the scarcety of subsequent contrasting analyses within the same framework would seem to imply that Schane’s study is essentially correct within that framework and/or that the subject matter itself holds no further theoretical interest for generative phonologists. The present paper challenges both of these implications. The discussion focuses on Schane’s formulation of the underlying vocalic system of French. Schane’s assumptions about phonological grammars, his analysis, and his methodology are open to question. Section 1 of this study discusses the concept “rule of grammar” as developed by Schane and considers possible alternatives. Inconsistencies of Schane’s analysis are illustrated in Section 2, while Section 3 demonstrates that the data which should offer the strongest support for Schane’s analysis in fact fail to do so. To the extent that Schane represents current phonological theory and practice, the criticisms voiced here have, of course, a wider application. The discussion focuses on Schane’s formulation of the underlying vocalic system of French. Abstract The issue of polygamy is among the prominent issues of our contemporary time.  This is the result of the confusing opinions and practices of polygamy. The matter is not limited to this aspect; it has rather related to the insight of the Qur’anic discourses. It has become a justification for some of the researchers to doubt the SharÊ‘ah legality of polygamy in Islam. This problem is based on the evident meaning of the verses pointing towards permissibility of polygamy, whereas the other verse restricts polygamy with justice. The Qur’an states (4: 3): “But if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.” At the same time, another evident Qur’anic discourse refers that the justice sought from the husband towards his wives is not achievable. The Qur’an states (4: 129): “You are never able to be fair and just as between women, even if it is you ardent desire.” From this premise, this research aims to unveil the pursued justice in the light of verses related to polygamy in the Qur’an, due to the fact that this issue has a social dimension in establishing Muslim family. This work attempts to reconcile between theory and practice of legality of polygamy in the light of the SharÊ‘ah objectives. The study drew its conclusion using both inductive and analytical methods so as to trace, collect, analyze and evaluate the relevant materials in order to build an objective and balanced position about the subject matter.  Keywords: Polygamy, the Noble Qur’an, the Qur’anic commentators, SharÊ‘ah Objectives, Conditions of polygamy.

Sampling and analysis of materials in the gas phase is not covered in general sampling standards and guides, due to the complex nature of the subject matter. Most gas-phase materials exist in the region from ambient temperatures (~300 K) to combustion temperatures typically around ~1200 K. Common to both temperature range margins, though predominantly for hot gases, is the fact that continuous reactions often take place in material that is moving at high speeds, presenting less than trivial challenges to conventional Theory of Sampling (TOS). The purposes of representative gas sampling are many, but three standard cases are presented, covering the most dominating scenarios met with in science, technology and industry.

The Islamic Education curriculum is one of the important components to create a generation of morality and martyrs. But the Islamic Religious Education curriculum has been considered only to educate cognitive aspects (transfer of knowladge) and has not touched many affective and psychomotor aspects (transfer of value). This is evident from the many students who have not been able to apply knowledge about their religion such as not performing worship well, speaking harshly and disrespectfully, disrespecting parents and teachers and a group of students who are often in shopping centers and crowds. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an Islamic Education curriculum that accommodates cognitive, affective and psychomotor aspects, so that education is not only a transfer of knowladge but also a transfer of value. Islamic Education curriculum development in this study contains the understanding of the expansion or improvement of the subject matter of the Islamic Religious Education curriculum and what is experienced by students or all efforts (engineering) programmed by Al Islam Azhar 36 Bandung in helping develop the potential of students through learning experience the potential to achieve the vision, mission, school goals.

This paper aims to describe the design of learning strategies and curriculum development in the learning process. Learning design emphasizes how an educator can apply his abilities in the classroom by using innovative and creative methods and ways in the learning process. A maqalah states that the subject matter is important, but the way to deliver the material is more important. This shows that the way educators deliver a material (strategy) is more important than the material itself (ath-thariiqatu ahammu minal maddah). Therefore, a good educator is not enough just to master a material, but must be accompanied by the ability to convey the material properly.

The subject matter of this paper is Buddhist economics in theory and practice. The goal is to point out the main concepts of Buddhist economics, which is different from Western mainstream economics, and then explain how applying Buddhist teachings to business can possibly improve societal well-being and the condition of the natural environment. The main contribution of the article is twofold. Firstly, it aims to plumb the literature to identify characteristics of Buddhist economics, which is a relatively new field. Secondly, it compares Buddhist enterprises to relatively well-known social enterprises, showing the main differences between them. “Buddhist ideas in practice” are illustrated by examples of such companies as Benefit System or Patagonia. The main conclusion is that money and wealth are allowed in Buddhism, but religion reminds people not to become attached to their possessions and to share them with others. Examples described in the paper lead to an awareness that economic activity can be a means to a noble life. New criteria of assessment of business success including social engagement and care for the environment should be created. Thus, deep institutional changes which redefine the roles and duties of business would be required. The paper is based on literature, documents and online sources. The research methods used are the critique of literature covering the subject matter, comparative analysis and elements of case studies.

POLISH INTERPRETATIONS OF TOTALITARIANISM: ON SOME OF THE RESULTS OF THE WORKS CARRIED OUT AT THE WITOLD PILECKI CENTRE FOR RESEARCH ON TOTALITARIANISMThe theory and practice of totalitarianism, despite the passage of time since the collapse of the systems showing its features in Europe, still arouses intellectual curiosity. This subject matter is also particularly interesting from the Polish point of view, as the native reflection on the subject reaching back in the tradition of political and legal thought to the interwar period shows the richness of often innovative research findings made by several generations of scientists in Poland and abroad. The subject of their exploration concerns not only the constitutive assumptions of totalitarianism and its fascist, Nazi and communist systemic forms, but also the peculiar domestic experiences that accompanied the inhabitants of Polish lands during World War II and the Cold War. This unique historical situation, in which the Republic of Poland had been entangled, creatively provokes to discover, archive and popularize knowledge in this field. Thus, it obliges to perpetuate materially and mentally important and tragic Polish experiences. Numerous publications, showing above all the perspective of the Polish interpretation, also make it possible to confront the positions of Polish researchers with the scientific findings from other parts of the world, as well as to take part in the international discourse with full legitimacy. The abovementioned motives were undoubtedly the main reasons for the creation of the collective work Experiencing two totalitarianisms: Interpretations published this year by the Witold Pilecki Centre for Research on Totalitarianism. Apart from other publications on totalitarian systems analysis, which have been published in Poland in recent years, it is an important research contribution to a subject which is completely unknown mainly as a result of the practices of the People’s Republic of Poland, but which is necessary in order to consolidate and settle accounts with the difficult past. This work can also be considered scientifically attractive because of the interdisciplinary historical, political, philosophical-political, legal and literary approach to the subject matter intended by its authors and editors.

A significant part of the definitions of the subject matter of economics goes back to the already classical definition of L. Robbins. According to the authors, the definition of the subject matter of economics according to Robbins is not entirely satisfactory. The norm is the allocation of the subject of science in the subject area. The selection of a subject of science by modus operandi violates the logic of constructing a disciplinary matrix of scientific knowledge. We agree that the definition of economic science in terms of material goods is narrow and not entirely satisfactory. However, replacing it with a definition through modus operandi is not an extension of the ‘material’ approach to understanding values, but a transition to a completely different logical level. We propose the following definitions: value –a rare utility (absolutely not necessarily material). An economic system is a system that can create and distribute values. Economics is a science that studies economic systems. The choice of an individual between different types of activities, and / or the use of alternative types of resources, although it is an economic choice, but the study of such an ‘atomic’ system is not enough to understand the properties of economic systems. The subject of economics appears with the advent of society. The social structure that ensures this coordination of production and exchange is the structure of the economic system. At the same time, it is the subject of economic science. The question of which aspect in the economic system is the main one – exchange or production – is the form of the question of what is the ontology of the economic universe: is it linear or non-linear? A complex non-linear system of the economy is made by two aspects: the use of durable assets in the production, as a result of which economic activity is ‘stretched' in time, and the great depth of the division of labor. Thus, the question of understanding the subject of economics is associated with a number of aspects that are significant for theory (and practice), ultimately –with the perception of the world –and the economic world as part of it.

THE germ of that which follows came into being many years ago in the days of my youth as a university instructor and assistant professor. It was generated by the then quite outspoken attitude of colleagues in the “exact sciences”; the sciences of which the subject-matter can be exactly weighed and measured and the force of its movements mathematically demonstrated. They assured us that the study of languages and literature had little or nothing scientific about it because: “It had no domain of concrete fact in which to work.” Ergo, the scientific spirit was theirs by a stroke of “efficacious grace” as it were. Ours was at best only a kind of “sufficient grace,” pleasant and even necessary to have, but which could, by no means ensure a reception among the elected.
