A new species of Comatricha (Myxomycetes) from southern Vietnam

A new species Comatricha spinispora Novozh. et D. W. Mitch. was obtained as field collections and isolated from moist-chamber cultures from samples of ground litter. Specimens of sporocarps and substrates for moist chamber cultures were collected in deciduous monsoon tropical lowland forests (Cat Tien National Park, Vinh Cuu Nature Reserve), mixed montane tropical forests and cloudy tropical forests (Bi Dup-Nui Ba Nature Reserve) of southern Vietnam during surveys carried out in December 2010, November 2011, 2012. The morphology of representative specimens of sporocarps was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy and micrographs of relevant details are provided. Spore ornamentation consists of long spines 0.5–0.8 μm long and 6–8 very small additional spines 0.1–0.3 μm long densely distributed over the top part of spine surface and visible only by SEM. The stability of the taxonomic characters of the species was confirmed by several collections obtained over a period of three field seasons in field as well as in moist chamber cultures. Comatricha spinispora resembles C. rutilipedata H. Marx in overall shape and size of the sporocarps but has dark brown bottom of stalk and slightly larger spores decorated by scattered long spines. The main morphological difference between C. spinispora and Macbrideola ovoidea Nann.-Bremek. et Y. Yamam. lies in shape and colour of sporocarp and spore ornamentation.

A new species of Cribraria, described herein as C. bicolor, appeared in moist chamber cultures on samples of the bark of Eucalyptus sp. collected at two localities in Australia. The morphology of representative specimens was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy, and micrographs of relevant morphological details of sporocarps and spores are provided. The species has a number of distinct and unique morphological features, including a glossy bright-violet globose sporotheca and a two-colored long stalk which is bright-red over the lower one-third and light yellow or lemon-yellow over the upper two-thirds. The combination of these characteristics as well as a shallow calyculus which is dark-violet when viewed under a dissecting microscope and bright red in transmitted light when mounted in lactophenol makes C. bicolor a well-defined morphospecies when compared to all other species of Cribraria. The stability of the taxonomic characters of the species was confirmed by an examination of a number of specimens.

Based on genetic, morphological and chromatical comparisons we evaluate the taxonomic status of two southern Vietnamese forest-dwelling populations of the Cyrtodactylus irregularis species complex. We confirm the allocation of the population from Binh Chau—Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve (Ba Ria—Vung Tau Province) to C. cattienensis and we describe the population of Nui Chua National Park (Ninh Thuan Province) as Cyrtodactylus sangi sp. nov. This brings to 18 the number of species within the C. irregularis complex and to 41 the number of described Cyrtodactylus species recorded from Vietnam.

A new species of Rubiaceae, Psydrax gialaiensis B.H.Quang, T.B.Tran & V.S.Dang, sp. nov., is described and illustrated from the Kon Chu Rang Nature Reserve, Gia Lai Province, southern Vietnam. This species is characterized by having strigose branches and leaves, a conspicuously bulging, short corolla tube, an accrescent nectary disc and a style with a dense tuft of hairs, which clearly distinguishes it from the other species in the genus. A description, vernacular name, conservation assessment, illustration, photographs, and a key to the species of Psydrax in Vietnam are provided.

Aspidistra minor is described and illustrated as a new species from southern Vietnam (Gia Lai province, Kon Chu Rang Nature Reserve). The new species possesses very small ovate to elliptic leaf blades and very small flowers with stamens inserted at the base of the perigone. In flower structure, the new species resembles A. leucographa and A. elatior but strongly differs in shape of leaf blades and position of stamens.

Aspidistra micrantha is described and illustrated as a new species from southern Vietnam (Quang Nam province, Song Thanh Nature Reserve). The new species has globoid flowers, which are the smallest within the genus Aspidistra. In floral structure, the closest species to A. micrantha is A. urceolata, which is endemic to the Guizhou province of China, but strongly differs from the latter in some morphological features of the rhizome, leaves and position of anthers.

Oribatid mite species of the family Galumnidae, Galumna (Galumna) parakazakhstani sp. nov., is described from litter of pine plantation in Dong Nai Culture and Nature Reserve (southern Vietnam). The new species is most similar to G. (G.) kazakhstani Krivolutskaya, 1952, however, it differs from the latter by the body size, morphology of bothridial setae and notogastral porose areas A1, development of anterior notogastral margin, and location of medial pore.

Polyspora gioii (Theaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from Hòn Bà Nature Reserve, Khánh Hòa Province, southern Vietnam. A morphological comparison between the new species and its closest congener, P. huongiana, and a key to all known species of Polyspora of Vietnam are given.

We describe a new species of Cyrtodactylus on the basis of two specimens collected from Ta Kou Nature Reserve, Binh Thuan Province, southern Vietnam. Cyrtodactylus chungi sp. nov. is distinguished from the remaining Indochinese bent-toed geckos by a combination of the following characters: relatively small body size (SVL up to 68.5 mm); a continuous neckband; 5 or 6 irregular transverse dorsal bands; 11 or 12 bands on original tail; keeled tubercles present on dorsum, posterior limbs and tail; 17 or 18 irregular dorsal tubercle rows; 30 or 31 ventral scale rows; ventrolateral skin folds indistinct; an angular series of seven precloacal pores in male and six pitted, enlarged precloacal scales in female, each series separated by a diastema of undifferentiated scales from 4–6 enlarged, poreless femoral scales; median subcaudals slightly enlarged; 17–20 subdigital lamellae under the fourth toe. Based on molecular analyses of the fragment of mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), the new species is recovered as the sister taxon to Cyrtodactylus cattienensis s. str. with a genetic divergence of more than 9%. In phylogenetic analyses, the new species is recovered as a member of the Cyrtodactylus irregularis species group.
