Attribution of the manuscript of The Life of Peter the Great and specifics of the Slavonic-Serbian language in the works of Zaharij Orfelin

The article analyses the problem of the authorship of an anonymous manuscript on the history of Russia in the time of Peter the Great, which today is part of the library of the Institute of East European History at the University of Vienna. The hypothesis proposed is that this is the first part of the work of the famous Serbian enlightener Zaharija Orfelin, The Life and Glorious Deeds of Peter the Great, and a further assumption is given on where the second part of the manuscript may be located. The literary language in Orfelin’s work is a vivid manifestation of the so-called “Slavonic-Serbian” language. Attention is drawn to the use by Orfelin of different language systems in different literary genres - for example, The Life of Peter was written in the “Slavonic-Serbian” language, poetry was mainly in Serbian, and political treatises, such as Representation, were written in German. Orfelin paid particular attention to the development of school education and within a short time published a number of textbooks for Serbian children: in 1766, the Latin ABC Book with a short dictionary translated into the Slavonic-Serbian language was published, followed a year later by First elements of the Latin language containing Latin grammar and didactic dialogues, and in 1767 by the ABC of the “Slavonic [slavenskij] language”, which was the first Serbian alphabet and used in primary schools in Serbia until the end of the nineteenth century. Of interest are Orfelin’s less studied contacts with other representatives of the Revival among southern Slavs. The conclusion illustrates Orphelin’s attitude to the reforms of Maria Theresa in the field of religion and education.

ABSTRACTThe essay reminds us of the effects of Paul Speratus, that early follower of Luther who died 450 years ago and who, probably unjustly, has enjoyed little attention in recent decades. At the beginning of 1522, the former Würzburg cathedral preacher was excommunicated by the theology faculty of the University of Vienna, because of a sermon that he had preached in St. Stephan’s Cathedral in Vienna - one of the first that argued against clerical vows of celibacy. From that time, Speratus aligned himself with the faction of reform-minded critics of scholasticism. Nevertheless, he found a new position as pastor in Iglau (Moravia), from which, however, King Ludwig of Hungary attempted to drive him. The congregation initially banded together in defense of their pastor, but under the pressure of the cross it did not persevere. Speratus had to yield and turned toward Wittenberg. There he gained attention as the translator of three writings of Luther, among others the Formula Missae|. In addition, he wrote the lyrics of the great Reformation hymn, Es ist das Heil uns kommen her|. A later song about the Augsburg Diet of 1530 expressed the problem of resistance. After 1524, Speratus took his final post, as court preacher in the young Duchy of Prussia and evangelical Bishop of Pomerania. His contribution to the history of the Prussian Reformation is deserving of a new evaluation.

Certain events sometimes exert a decisive influence on the future direction of a person's life. In my case one of the more determinative occurred during a brief week spent in Vienna in early February 1957 For one thing, I discovered in the Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv highly significant documents in some cartons that had just been returned to Austria from Italy, by mistake as it turned out. The director of the Austrian archives, Gebhard Rath, put these records at my disposal. These papers, together with material of lesser import in the Archivio di Stato in Milan, provided the documentation for an article showing how Austrian officials had thwarted the efforts of an Italian scoundrel to extort money from them. More important than this discovery were my conversations with Professor Hugo Hantsch, of the University of Vienna, during the course of which I promised to supply as complete a list as possible of United States and Canadian writings on the history of the Habsburg monarchy, take the initiative in founding some kind of association for American scholars interested in Habsburg and Austrian history, and endeavor to help the Austrian professor obtain a grant from the Ford Foundation for a large international project on the history of the Habsburg monarchy from 1848 to 1918.

The article offers a review on the history of Slavic studies at St. Petersburg and Greifswald universities from the era of Peter the Great to present day. The role of Professor Lyudmila Verbitskaya is highlighted who always actively supported the activities of the Department of Slavic Philology (for example, she approved the initiative to create a department of Ukrainian studies in the early 2000s). Thanks Verbitskaya, St. Petersburg University was historically recognized as the first university in Russia founded by Peter the Great in 1724, which was proven by archival materials stored in Greifswald. Peter the Great, in the assembly hall of the University of Greifswald in September 1712, at a meeting of the Academic Council received a proposal from the President of the German Academy of Sciences Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz on the establishment of a university in St. Petersburg with a European status. The status of the first university was officially recognized by a decree of the Government of the Russian Fed- eration in 1999 when the 275th anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg State University was celebrated. As the Rector of St. Petersburg University, Verbitskaya in 2006 concluded an inter-university agreement with the Rector of the University of Greifswald Professor Jürgen Kohler. Slavic scholars and professors from St. Petersburg and Greifswald Universities collaborate closely. One of the active pedagogical and scientific areas of such cooperation is Slavic studies, which have long combined the efforts of Russian and German philologists.

The article is devoted to the description of the fond of Grigory Leonidovich Lozinsky (1889–1942) in the Research Center for Eastern European Studies at the University of Bremen. The author has familiarized herself with the fond and described the documents it stores. The analysis of the historiography indicates that the figure of Grigori Lozinsky and his social and professional activities have been studied insufficiently; there are no works devoted to the description of his archival fond. The author draws attention to the acquisition history of the archive, points out that the materials handed over by Marina Lozinsky–Gross, Grigory Lozinsky’s daughter, in 1994–2008 are unique, as all remaining documents in her personal possession were destroyed during the fire in her home in 2012. The article gives a brief history overview of the archive, which contains a large number of personal provenance sources on the history of the Russian emigration in the 20th century. Documents of personal provenance (correspondence, speeches, memoirs of Elizabeth Miller, G. L. Lozinsky’s sister) enable to reconstruct Lozinsky’s biography, to identify some features and clarify the main characteristics of the documents. The fond consists of five boxes. The first two comprise of documents connected with G. L. Lozinsky’s teaching activity, his participation in the activities of the Pushkin Committee, the Society of Friends of the Russian Book, and the Scientific and Philosophical Society. Three contain his correspondence with colleagues and friends who lived both in emigration and in Soviet Russia. The documents of the fond provide information on other figures of emigration, events and problems that troubled the ?migr? community. Materials of the Russian high school in Paris include programs, lists of students, topics of essays, invitations to concerts and students’ self–made newspapers. The documents on the activity of G. Lozinsky in the Pushkin Committee showcase discussions on the preparation of the anniversary edition of A.S. Pushkin’s works and difficulties G. Lozinsky had to face as a member of the editorial board. The article underscores the importance of introducing new data into scientific use. The sources can be used not only to study an individual destiny in emigration, but also the history of everyday life, problems of adaptation in emigration, and history of the Russo–French relations. The overwhelming majority of Grigory Lozinsky’s documents has not yet been published, nor introduced into scientific use. At present, there are no plans to digitize the documents.

The article presents a philosophical analysis of the history of the Faculty of Philosophy, starting with Peter the Great’s reforms and ending with its modern state. It is believed that the University of St. Petersburg was organized on the basis of a note by Leibniz to Peter the Great. In fact, there is no direct coincidence, since the university was built and developed in accordance with the capabilities and needs of the Russian Empire. Even at first, the first teachers were not Germans, but the so-called “Rusyns” (Leibniz also had Slavic roots). The example of the professors’ biographies revealed little-known pages of the history of Russian philosophy. Particular attention is paid to the search for a model of philosophical education in the post-revolutionary time. In accordance with the doctrine of the three constituent parts of Marxism, the emphasis was first placed on ideology and dialectic. Then philosophy was used in the struggle for “proletarian science.” In the 60s it gained relative independence, promoted the development of the theory of cognition, sociology and theory of values. The “golden age” of Russian philosophy began in the 90-s thanks to the talented workers of the Faculty of Philosophy, who published many original works that had a significant impact on the worldview of society. The accelerated development of scientific and educational activities has been made possible by adequate structural changes in the institutions of humanities education. The experience of its reforming is also useful in today’s environment.
