Contractor prequalification assessment in the construction industry is an essential part of the project development process because contractors play a pivotal role in the extension of projects and resources. The main objective of the present study is comprised prequalification assessment for classifying contractors by applied the EDAS method for recognizing the contractors' potential before competitive tendering and obtaining bids. First, an inclusive, detailed list of 56 sub-factors under 5 main factors for project prequalification was compiled following a thorough literature review, and review of contractors by experts of Bandar Imam Khomeini municipality who already have done projects with contractors. Second, used the CRITIC method for obtained the weighing and importance of each factor. Third, classified the contractors by applied the EDAS system for recognizing the contractors' potential before competitive tendering and obtaining bids. Finally, the prequalification assessment process was developed to obtaining the rank of each contractor and help the stakeholders to select the right contractors. The effectiveness of the present approach was tested by applying it to a case study of the prequalification assessment of four construction companies' in Bandar Imam Khomeini municipality, Khuzestan, Iran. It is worth mentioning that the prequalification assessment by the proposed approach is approved by the project stakeholders and is consistent with their expectations. It can be concluded that based on relevant ranking and weighing of companies that procedure can be extended to the same studies in this regard, and the contribution of the present study is to propose a support system for prequalification and identification of contractors' ability, before assigning projects to companies for success in projects.

This research explores the failure of competitively tendered projects in the UK construction industry to procure the most suited contractor(s) to conduct the works. Such work may have equal relevance for other developed nations globally. This research seeks to teach clients and their representatives that “lowest price” does not mean “best value”, by presenting a case study of a successfully negotiated tender undertaken by a small-to-medium enterprise (SME) contractor; SME studies are relatively scant in academic literature. By applying the “lessons learnt” principle, this study seeks to improve future practice through the development of a novel alternative procurement option (i.e., negotiation). A mixed philosophical stance combining interpretivism and pragmatism was used—interpretivism to critically review literature in order to form the basis of inductive research to discuss negotiation as a viable procurement route, and pragmatism to analyse perceptions of tendering and procurement. The methods used follow a three-stage waterfall process including: (1) literature review and pilot study; (2) quantitative analysis of case study data; and (3) qualitative data collection via a focus group. Our research underscores the need to advise clients and their representatives of the importance of understanding the scope of works allowed within a tender submission before discounting it based solely on price. In addition, we highlight the failings of competitive tendering, which results in increased costs and project duration once the works commence on site. These findings provide new contemporary insight into procurement and tendering in the construction industry, with emphasis on SME contractors, existing relationships, and open-book negotiation. This research illustrates the adverse effects of early cost estimates produced without first securing a true understanding of project buildability and programming. Our work concludes with a novel insight into an alternative procurement option that involves early SME contractor involvement in an open-book environment, without the need for a third-party cost control.

There is a gap of knowledge between practitioners about the off-site construction. For this reason, the Manni Group case study presented in this article highlights the positive role of dissemination as business value proposition support in the context of off-site construction industry. The Manni Group involved opinion leaders, professionals, universities and industrial partners in a network of dissemination that, going beyond the concept of advertising, it generated a multiple effect of value creation between the direct and indirect involved stakeholders. Dissemination emerges as a model of action that creates impacts on cultural change. It is scalable and applicable in many areas where actors have the right competences to manage the dissemination. Wherever there is a knowledge gap or friction towards new techniques and methodologies, the model is able to create value for companies and stakeholders involved in the emerging network.

The construction industry has played an essential role in the process of modernization and industrialization and it has also been a major factor in determining the development of the infrastructure for other economic sectors. Construction companies consider the measurement of work progress, which often wastes time and has a low resolution, to be one of the most challenging problems faced by project management. Therefore, this research aimed to propose practical solutions by applying recent technological achievements of the 4.0 industrial revolution to improve the efficiency of the quantity management process. By utilizing the advantages and features of a BIM model and 3D laser scanning, this paper proposes that adopting a BIM model and 3D laser scanning has the potential to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the quantity management process. The case study demonstrated some typical tasks to evaluate accuracy and efficiency as well as to showcase the research proposal.

<p><strong>Purpose:</strong> The purpose of this paper is to identify and determine reasons why construction companies reject some of the request for proposals (RFPS) suitable for them. <br /><strong>Methodology/Approach:</strong> The research has several parts. Within the first part the list of reasons which lead to rejection of RFPS and thus potential client are identified. Then the comparison of differences between groups of rejected RFPS with different configuration is made. The last part of research use Pareto analysis to determine most obvious and most costly reasons of rejection of RFPS. <br /><strong>Findings:</strong> The paper identifies 12 reasons, why construction companies decline to prepare proposal for their potential clients. It also doesn’t confirm that configuration of RFPS has significant impact on the rejection of RFPS. Moreover the results on the other hand showed that insufficient trust represent the main barrier which influences the rejection of RFPS in selected company.<br /><strong>Research Limitation/implication:</strong> The main limitation of the research is that it is based on single case study. Although, the quantitative results have to be generalised very carefully, on the other hand paper provide list of the possible reasons why construction companies decline to compete for an offer. <br /><strong>Originality/Value of paper:</strong> The paper provides unique perspective because apart from traditional attitude, where only the submitted RFPS are evaluated, this paper analyses rejected RFPS and tries to identify and determine reasons why construction companies decide not to prepare proposal and thus reduce the possibility to acquire new contract.</p>

The most important aspect of any successful structural construction is the formwork system. Formwork itself defines as the temporary structure into which the concrete placed to obtain its desired shape and gains its weight to withstand against various loading conditions. This paper focuses on the two parts 1. Identified different formwork systems using in Indian construction industry for high-rise building construction and 2. Explanations of the decision support system for formwork system so that a decision-maker decides or makes the right choice for the selection of formwork system. This study employed a literature review approach (journal paper, research paper, technical articles & notes, and white paper). The methodology divided into two parts; firstly, the identification of the formwork systems used in the construction industry and secondly, to study a brief about decision support system and for formwork system by which the ease to make a decision support frame for the formwork system selection. This paper reflects the different formwork system typology used in the construction industry for high-rise buildings. The outcome of this paper helps to establish the baseline to develop decision support for the formwork system selection.

Research demonstrate that productivity in the Danish building and construction industry has only doubled over the last fifty years, whereas the manufacturing industry has increased six times. Utilisation of mass customization as a strategy has achieved results in the manufacturing industry in terms of increasing productivity and competitiveness, so the strategy might have potentials in the building and construction industry as well. However, mass customization as a strategy for improving the productivity of the building and construction industry has not been explored as much as in the manufacturing industry. The purpose of this paper is to analysethe assumptions and possibilities for applying the principles of masscustomisation related to establishing an adaptable integrated system of entities in the value chain of the building and construction industry.The outset of the paper is a literature review concerning the utilisation of mass customization as a strategy in terms of increasing productivity within the building and construction industry. An essential part of the paper is a case study of 11 building and construction companies and an analysis of the conditions for cooperation between the entities in the value chain of the building and construction industry. The paper induces to which extent it makes sense to talk about utilisation of mass customisation by applying the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) and standardisation initiatives of the construction industry provided by buildingSMART, and at the same time harvesting the benefits of the mass customization.

E-commerce is emerging and growing in all kinds of businesses and industries over the world especially in the construction industry. This research focuses on the adoption of business-to- business kind of e-commerce in construction industry. This research aims to identify the motivational and barrier factors of the construction workers in influencing the adoption of e- commerce specifically in the construction industry world. As part of the research, a multinational company, which produces tools for the construction industry, will be used as a case study to look into how the customers of this company are adopting e-commerce. This research uses the Diffusion of Innovation model as the based research framework to understand the factors that explain the rate of adoption and how these factors are influencing the adoption in the construction industry. Other internal and external factors of companies such as the organizational factor, technological factor digital readiness will also be looked into to understand their influence as well when it comes to adoption of e-commerce. Data collection is done by distributing questionnaires to the related participants in the construction industry. Findings from this study provides insights on the factors of adoption by applying the diffusion of innovation model and recommendation of strategies for this industry to address the problem of low adoption of e-commerce among construction workers in the construction industry. This research showed that relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, Trialability, organizational readiness and trust are significant factors leading to the adoption of e-commerce systems. Culture as well as technological and digital readiness were found to be insignificant. Overall, the study’s findings enrich the discourse related to the adoption of e-commerce systems by construction companies in Asia and other parts of the world. The findings will be relevant for construction companies around the world planning to introduce or improve the e-commerce adoption of the customers. The study’s findings could also be relevant for future analysis of e-commerce adoption.

One of the most important stages in the construction process is selecting the right contractor considering the smallest price that may raise many doubts. The cheapest option may be uneconomi­cal in view of a failure of technical quality and assessment of building lifetime. The article reviews literature and worldwide used practice to establish the most important factors of contrac­tor’s competitiveness. The paper also determines the main factors of the competitiveness of roofing contractors and evaluates qual­ity as a competitive advantage of the companies having influence on other factors of competitiveness. In conclusion; important proposals for assessing the competitiveness of the contractor and recommendations for future research are provided. Pigiausias pasirinkimas gali būti neekonomiškas, atsižvelgiant į nepakankamą pagamintos produkcijos techninę kokybę ir įvertinant statybos objekto gyvavimo trukmę. Norint išsiaiškinti svarbiausius rangovo konkurencingumo veiksnius, buvo atlikta pasaulinės literatūros ir praktikos apžvalga. Straipsnyje nustatyti pagrindiniai įmonių, klojančių prilydo­mąsias stogų medžiagas, konkurencingumo veiksniai. Įvertinta kokybės, kaip įmonės konkurencinio pranašumo, įtaka kitiems jos konkurencingumo veiksniams. Pateikti siūlymai rangovo konkurencingumui vertinti, taip pat būsimų tyrimų pasiūlymai.

All industries rely on communication and its effectiveness to run a system of subcontracting. There are many subcontractors in the construction industry that are involved in processes, such as design, plumbing, electrical, and project management. Communication facilitates cooperation, but when it is ineffective, then it leads to poor performance. The situation is even more critical in a culturally diverse environment, such as the UAE construction industry. This study sought to investigate the risks that ineffective communication can have on a construction industry by using the UAE as a case study. The researcher collected secondary data by conducting an in-depth analysis of past studies. Also, the qualitative analysis of the information led to the realization that communication failure could cause sub-contractor failure, scope changes, design changes, ineffective knowledge transfer, poor stakeholder engagement, time differences, and geographical distance.

Modular endo-prostheses were introduced in 1980s with the intent of replacing custom made implants, which were criticized for lack of intra-operative flexibility, and high lead time and cost [1]. A typical modular prosthesis set may have as many as 200 components, making it difficult to select the right set of components in intra operative stage. An automated prosthesis selection methodology to limit the choice of prosthesis components with a qualitative tag such as: (1) ‘most suitable’, (2) ‘probably suitable’, and (3) ‘not suitable’, will greatly help the surgeons. This article describes a computer aided decision support system for selecting endo-prosthesis components driven by anatomical data of the patient. The methodology is explained with a case study of distal femur replacement.
