The Common carp, Cyprinus carpio is an exotic fish in Lake Naivasha. It is one of the commercially important species in the lake. This study investigated on its biology and population parameters during 2017. Fish samples (433) were caught using gillnets of mesh-sizes 2-5 inches. Length of fish ranged from 12.0 to 69.0 cm TL, and weighed between 32 and 6840 g. The overall population sex ratio was 1.66: 1.0 (male: female). The mean length of females was 34.8 cm and males 32.1 cm. The length at first maturity was calculated at 54.0 and 49.0 cm for females and males, respectively. The mean condition factor for all fish was 1.05. The peak condition values were recorded during April (1.35), September (1.59) and October (1.80). There was a significant difference in mean condition factor within the size classes highest (1.38) and lowest (0.93) values recorded in class 56-60 and 26-30, respectively. The overall asymptotic length (L∞) was 73.5 cm and growth curvature (K) 1.05 yr-1 with growth performance index (Ф) of 3.72. The total (Z), natural (M), fishing (F) mortality coefficients 2.85, 1.34 and 1.78 yr-1, respectively. The exploitation rate (E) of 0.57 was higher than optimum sustainable yield (E0.5) of 0.32, but not different from maximum sustainable yields (Emax) 0.54 and economic yield (E0.1) 0.46. The length at first capture (LC50) was lower than length at first maturity (LM50), suggesting capture of immature fish. This study provides parameters of fish biology and population often useful in fisheries management.

Abstract. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the replacement of different levels of animal protein concentrate (APC) with a commercial dry yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae in diets on common carp performance. The experiment was conducted in the fish laboratory of the Department of Animal Production, College of Agricultural Sciences, University of Sulaimani in Kurdistan region of Iraq for the period from 25.07.2015 to 15.10.2015. Starting with a period of acclimatization for 21 days, to test the efficiency of using commercial dry yeast S. cerevisiae as alternative protein source to APC used in the manufacturing of diets for common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) by using 90 fish at weights ranged 22-42g divided into 15 groups distributed randomly on 15 plastic containers by five treatments with three replicates per each variant. The treatments contain different levels of APC and yeast S. cerevisiae as follows: first treatment (Control T1): 100% APC / 0.00% yeast S. cerevisiae; second treatment (T2): 75% APC / 25% yeast S. cerevisiae; third treatment (T3): 50% APC / 50% yeast S. cerevisiae; fourth treatment (T4): 25% APC / 75% yeast S. cerevisiae and fifth treatment (T5): 0.00% APC / 100% yeast S. cerevisiae. There was no significant difference observed in the value of biological indices for some physiological organs, spleen and Hepatic pancreases and also in the value of the condition factor (CF) between carps from different treatments. The results of the chemical composition of the fish flesh showed significant difference in the moisture of individuals from T4 as compared with these from T2 and T5, T2 was significantly increased in crude protein as compared with other treatments, T5 had significant differences in fat crude as compared with other treatments, T1 and T2 were significantly different in ash as compared with other treatments, T1 was significantly different in carbohydrates as compared with other treatments. The results showed no significant differences observed among experimental treatments in Panel test of tenderness, color, juiciness, flavor and overall acceptance for fish meat.

This study investigated the in vitro effects of different concentrations of Atrazine (0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 0.5 mg/L) added to motile and immotile solutions on kinematics quality of sperm cells of common carp, Cyprinus carpio, which is a fish of economic significance. The kinematics of the sperm cells was analyzed by a computer-assisted sperm analysis system (CASA). As a result of the study, while there was a significant difference (P < 0.05) between the groups in terms of the VSL (μm/s) and VCL (μm/s) values after the Atrazine-added immotile solution’s (IMS) and incubation for 3 hours, there was a significant difference (P < 0.05) in only the VSL values directly activated by the Atrazine-added motile solution (MS). DNA fragmentation was evident but not in higher numbers in the 0.1 mg/L atrazine group. Finally, it was determined the effective concentration (EC50) values of the VSL value of the motile and immotile solution as 0.34 mg/L and 0.03 mg/L, respectively.

DIEL RHYTHM OF OXYGEN CONSUMPTION ON ADULT COMMON CARP Cyprinus carpio WITH CONTINUOUS 24-HOURS PHOTOPERIOD         Some external factors could affect the metabolism rate of fish. One of them is photoperiod which related to the length of day and night in a day. Based on that correlation, the experiment was conducted to determine the effects of photoperiod manipulation to the diel rhythm of oxygen consumption on adult common carp Cyprinus carpio. The experimental fish (total length: 29.2 ± 0.4 cm, total weight: 1295.8 ± 56.1 g) was observed in respirometer which connected in a closed recirculation system. The study was conducted with three replications with one individu in each replication. The water temperature and closed recirculation system was maintained at 20.2 ± 0.3oC. The photoperiod was set to 24 hours light : 0 hours of dark by using fluorescent lamp which lit continuously. The results showed that during 24 hours observation at 24 hours light: 0 hours dark condition, adult common carp has an oxygen consumption range of 24.5 - 29.1 mg O2/kg/h at 20oC. The average value of the lowest oxygen consumption occurred at 02.00 and 17.00 (24.5 ± 1.9 mg O2/kg/h). Meanwhile, the highest oxygen consumption value was recorded at 06.00 (29.1 ± 1.7 mg O2/kg/h). Based on data of oxygen consumption obtained from this study, no significant difference found between oxygen consumption of adult common carp during day and night with photoperiod manipulation. The activity and metabolism of adult common carp have changed with the change of photoperiod. Keywords: Common carp, Cyprinus carpio, oxygen consumption, photoperiod. ABSTRAK          Beberapa faktor eksternal dapat mempengaruhi laju metabolisme pada ikan. The present study aimed to adapt a Long-run Real-time DNA Damage Quantification (LORD-Q) qPCR-based method for the analysis of the mitochondrial genome of Common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) and detect the DNA damaging effect of T-2 (4.11 mg kg−1) and deoxynivalenol (5.96 mg kg−1) mycotoxins in a 3-week feeding period. One-year-old Common carp were treated in groups (control, T-2 and DON). The mycotoxins were sprayed over the complete pelleted feed, and samples were taken weekly. Following the adaptation of LORD-Q PCR method for the Common carp species, the number of lesions were calculated to determine the amount of DNA damage. In the first and second weeks, the T-2 and the DON treated groups differed significantly from each other; however these differences disappeared in the third week. There was a significant difference in the DNA lesion values between weeks 1 and 3 in the deoxynivalenol-contaminated groups. While in the T-2 treated groups, the DNA lesion values were significantly reduced on weeks 2 and 3 compared to week 1. The results suggested that the trichothecene mycotoxins have a relevant DNA damaging effect.

Thirty-three broodstock of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) obtained from Panyam Fish Farm, plateau state Nigeria was used to evaluate the percentage hatchability of carp through induced natural spawning in outdoor Hapa net system, and induced breeding by stripping in indoor concrete Ponds. Spawning and fertilization was natural for experimental group 1. Ovaprim hormone was used to induce broodstock in experimental group 2 and 3, but unlike experimental group 3, experimental group 2 was not stripped manually, as the induced female broodstock shed her eggs naturally. At the end of the experiment, the mean number of eggs in one gram was found to be (733.33±3.53a) in treatment 3, as compared to that of experimental group 2 (702.00±3.21b) and experimental group 1 (709.33±4.91b), with a significant difference at (P<0.05). There was no significant difference (P<0.05) in fecundity (x103) from the three experimental groups. Percentage fertilization was highest in experimental group 2 (94.44±0.40a). Percentage Hatchability was highest in experimental group 3 (94.10±0.85a). Number of post fry in one liter of water at day seven after hatching was found to be highest in  experimental group 3 (1896.30±53.40a). In conclusion, the best method of carp propagation for aquaculture is the synchronized propagation through stripping in indoor concrete ponds, which had 94% hatching rate.

The effect of astaxanthin powders on biological, health and growth parameter of common carp Cyprinus carpio L. Fish weight varied between (59.2 –66.4gm)were studied for 10 weeks. four treatments(three replicates/treatment) were employed as follows: T1: Diet without any addition, T2: adding 2.5 gm astaxanthin powders / kg diet, T3: adding 5 gm astaxanthin powders / kg diet, T4: adding 7.5gm astaxanthin powders / kg diet. Twice daily feeding at 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. should be considered that the feeding rate of biomass weight after each took biometrics. Finally, blood samples were taken from the caudal vein of fish. The results showed no significant difference between treatments in terms of biological parameter (p>0.05). The results showed significant difference between treatments in terms of body indices, including Gonadosomatic, but no significant difference (p>0.05) Hepatosomatic, Spleenosomaticindex and Gill index. The results showed a significant difference between treatments in terms of growth performance (p<0.05), including weight gain, Relative growth rate and Specific growth rate. Group results of blood factors showed that between Granulocytes, Lymphocytes and Monocytes there was no significant difference between treatments (p>0.05). Lastly, we found that diets containing higher levels of Astaxanthin powders improve the growth performance, biological and GSI in common carp Cyprinus carpio L.
