Introduction: Acne vulgaris is a disorder of the pilosebaceous units. It is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis notable for open/closed comedones, papules, pustules, nodules. It is characterized by open comedones, closed comedones and pustular nodules. Aim of study: To examine factors underlying the quality of life of people with acne. Materials and method: A total of 576 respondents were included in the study. Acne specific Quality of Life questionnaire was used for this purpose. A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted, performed in private dermatological clinic as well as on-line. All analyses were conducted by using the SPSS.26 for Windows. Results and Discussion: 5.7 % were males and 94.3 percent were females. About 69.4% were aged between 15-25; 16.7 % between 26 to 30; 8.8% between 31 to 35 years old. Quality of life and emotional perception towards the social environment is demonstrated by the three components (self-perception of discomfort, functionality, and social factor). The reliability levels for the three components were .858 for self-perception of discomfort, .779 for functionality and .745 for the social factor. The factor analysis discovered three underlying factors: self-perception of discomfort, social factor and functionality in daily life. Conclusion: The findings confirm the general notion that people with acne have problems in quality of life and therefore special attention to psychological intervention should be given in the treatment of acne.

ABSTRACT Objective:  To investigate the relationship between condition-specific quality of life (QoL) and occlusal/skeletal traits of pretreatment orthognathic surgery patients. Materials and Methods:  Patients referred for orthognathic surgery during the 2012–2014 period were asked to complete the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) at consultation. Patient demographics, indices of treatment need, occlusal traits, and cephalometric variables were also recorded. Bivariate analyses were carried out between the OQLQ scores and the clinical measurements. Significant variables were added to a multivariate regression model to determine the effect of these predictive factors on OQLQ. Results:  One hundred and two patients were recruited. Initial analyses showed that gender and overjet were significantly associated with the overall OQLQ score. Being female increased the overall OQLQ score by 15.6 points when compared to males (95% confidence interval [CI], 7.4–23.8). Females also had significant associations in the social and awareness domains of the OQLQ. The magnitude of overjet away from normal values was associated with poorer overall QoL, with significant relationships in the esthetic and functional domains. The Index of Orthognathic Functional Treatment Need was significantly associated with the functional domain of OQLQ, with patients in category 5 scoring a mean of 10.0 points more than patients in category 4 (95% CI, 2.1–17.8). The Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need and other cephalometric variables were not associated with the OQLQ. Conclusions:  Females are more aware of their facial deformity and report a greater social detriment when compared to males. Patients with a higher orthognathic treatment need report greater functional disadvantage.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to assess/correlate health-related quality of life with the social dimension of hematopoietic, autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplant patients in the three years post-transplant. Methods: longitudinal, observational study with 55 patients, in a reference hospital in Latin America, from September 2013 to February 2019, using the Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core and Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy Bone Marrow Transplantation. Results: A total of 71% underwent allogeneic transplantation. The social dimension had low averages since the baseline stage (55, 21) and low scores (56) for quality of life in pancytopenia. There was a significant positive correlation between social dimension, quality of life in pancytopenia (p<0.01) and follow-up after hospital discharge (p<0.00). There is a significant difference (p<0.00) throughout the stages, however, not in terms of the type of transplant (p>0.36/0.86). Conclusions: patients with better assessments in the social dimension have a better quality of life. Interventions focusing on the multidimensionality of the quality of life construct are necessary.

Introduction: Bruxism is characterized by the parafunctional act of tightening or grinding the teeth, which may occur in a conscious or unconscious way, during sleep or in wakefulness. It has become a growing concern in recent years due to its negative impact on quality of life (QOL) and also because it is considered an important risk factor for temporomandibular disorders. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the QOL related to bruxism in physiotherapy teachers from a private institution through a questionnaire and their perception for such parafunction. Method: A cross-sectional, quantitative and exploratory study. The self-perception of bruxism was assessed through three questions from the Fonseca Anamnestic Indexand the perspective of QLV through the Quality of Life Questionnaire (SF-36), with a sample of 38 teachers of both genders. Results: Based on the results found, the level of statistical significance was set at p<0,05 for all tests. Among the 38 interviewees, 47,4% (n = 18) of professionals were observed with bruxism, with a higher prevalence in the female gender. Regarding the comparisons of QOL in relation to bruxism, a statistically significant difference was found in relation to the dimension of Pain (p=0,014), in which the mean for the bruxism group was (59,8) and without bruxism (78,5). Conclusion: There is a relation of the bruxism with the quality of life of the interviewees, and this habit mainly interferes in the domain of pain. Another aspect that was shown to be significantly associated with bruxism was nervous tension, in which the tense and nervous professionals were associated with self-perception of bruxism.

Objective: To know the impact of acne among female university students on their quality of life. Methodology: A cross sectional study conducted included 260 female students at the King Khalid University. A self-administered questionnaire was used in Arabic for data collection. It consisted of personal data, practices and conditions related to health, specific questions on acne vulgaris and the Acne Quality of Life (QOL) questionnaire. Results: Prevalence of acne among participant students was 87%. Its severity among 48% of participants was mild, 39.6% was moderate, while 12.3% had severe acne. Its prevalence did not differ significantly according to participants’ personal characteristics. The mean score for self-perception was 18.4+8.0, for role emotional was 14.4+8.8, for role social was 14.4+6.4, for acne symptoms was 13.4+5.2, while mean overall score was 60.5+24.4. Acne QOL scores for all domains were significantly lower among students who have acne. Scores for all domains and overall scores were lowest among students having severe acne. Students’ acne QOL scores differed significantly according to their family monthly income regarding “self-perception” (p=0.005), role emotional (p=0.037) and overall (p=0.012). Conclusions: Prevalence of facial acne is very high among students and significantly affects their QOL. During management of acne patients, health care professionals should consider its psychosocial aspect. Limitations: Generalizability of the results is limited to female university students only and limited personal characteristics were assessed in the present study. Conflict of interest: There is no conflict of interest involved with this study Key words: Acne, quality of life, female university students.

Abstract Background: Australia has one of the highest rates of asthma prevalence worldwide, with almost one in 10 children affected. The mental health and wellbeing of asthmatic children is reported to be significantly more impacted than non-asthmatic peers; affecting both asthma management and their overall quality of life. The relationship between asthma and psychological distress is likely bi-directional, therefore requiring an intervention that addresses both psychological and physiological factors. Technology-based psychological interventions provide a potential solution that may increase engagement with treatment amongst adolescents. In particular, augmented reality (AR) is a novel technology that can be tailored to individual populations and has been proven effective in the management of other conditions. No evidence exists currently on the feasibility of AR in the management of psychological wellbeing within the asthmatic community. Methods: An 80-page workbook has been developed based on best-practice asthma guidelines and through consultation with field experts in Psychology and Paediatric Respiratory Medicine, AR tools have been developed following a needs assessment, and a bespoke smartphone app has been developed by Portal Australia. Forty (n=40) young people aged 13-17 years with persistent asthma will be recruited from the Respiratory Department at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Participants will be required to download a smartphone application (YOLO de-stress) and will be encouraged to use the app for a month. Participants will be required to complete the Youth Asthma-related Anxiety Scale, Paediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire and the Asthma Control Questionnaire at baseline and one-month post-intervention. Data analysis will be descriptive, with counts and percentages for categorical data, and means and standard deviations for continuous data compared between baseline and follow-up. For continuous outcome variables mixed effects linear models will be used. For other outcome measures mixed effects generalized linear models will be used. Discussion: This study will explore the feasibility of AR tools to aid delivery of psychological intervention to manage symptoms of elevated psychological distress among young people with asthma, and inform development of a fully powered RCT. Trial registration: This project was prospectively registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ANZCTR): ACTRN12620001109998
