One pervasive social issue that has received little attention within the behavior analytic community is racism and the systemic oppression of Black, Indigenous, and non-Black People of Color (BIPOC). The present paper offers guidance and examples of how each of us as behavior analysts might build individualized self-management behavior change plans that support initiation and sustained socially significant anti-racism work as we move from allies to accomplices within our own sphere of influence. This paper introduces the concept of self-managed anti-racism behavior change plans that (a) operationally define anti-racist action, use measurable outcomes and strategies for data collection on specific anti-racist and support actions; (b) provide choices to improve engagement and reduce barriers to adherence; and (c) use effective behavioral interventions to alter the availability of discriminative stimuli or reduce their influence, and increase the availability of reinforcers that are compatible with the goal of the behavior change plan for increasing anti-racism behavior and dismantling structures perpetuating racial inequities.

Multicultural behavior analysts must stand together to address the issues of systemic racism collectively, show solidarity, and support Black lives. This paper discusses the role of culturally and linguistically diverse behavior analysts, mechanisms underlying barriers to showing solidarity, and mechanisms required for cultural evolution to promote a compassionate and nurturing approach to racial equity. It is critical that non-Black people of color actively participate in antiracist advocacy to show solidarity to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Background: Video games are interactive technologies able to support children in health promotion, behavior changes, and chronic disease self-management. The use of health behavior change determinants in video game design can increase its effectiveness. This study describes the process of designing a video game for Brazilian children with T1D clarifying the use of health behavior change determinants that may influence self-management behaviors. Methods: This was a methodological study based on health behavior change theories and the user-centered design approach. The results of a qualitative study conducted with children aged 7 to 12 years identified learning needs about knowledge on diabetes and self-care tasks which contribute to inappropriate behaviors. A Behavioral Diagnosis presented health behavior change determinants, capable of influencing children’s learning needs and behaviors, that were considered to design The Heroes of Diabetes—the power of knowledge. Results: The results presented the process of designing 4 mini games with its description and theory foundation to reach children’s lack of understanding about T1D, insulin’s role, SMBG requirements, food groups and physical activity’s role in glycemic control. Knowledge, goal settings, extrinsic and intrinsic motivation determinants were related with video games design features. Conclusions: The findings support the use of health behavior change determinants into video game design as a guide to achieve children learning needs and that might influence self-management behaviors.

Self-management interventions promote illness management among adults with chronic health conditions. Little is known regarding the processes by which these interventions have their effects. The present study examined how Living Well, an effective self-management intervention for adults with serious mental illness, led to health behavior change in a randomized controlled trial. A convenience subset ( N = 15) of participants completed qualitative interviews regarding the feasibility/acceptability of Living Well. An inductive secondary qualitative analysis, using a combination of interpretive phenomenological and social constructivist approaches, was conducted to examine processes of change. Results indicate that Living Well provided information and knowledge, opportunities for learning from others and real-world practice, and an interpersonally supportive environment. These active ingredients led to enhanced self-awareness, confidence, sense of control, and behavior and health status changes among participants. These findings are considered in the context of prominent behavior change theories such as social cognitive theory and self-regulation.

BACKGROUND Bipolar disorder is a severe mental illness characterized by recurrent episodes of depressed, elevated and mixed mood states. Pharmacological management combined with adjunctive psychotherapy can decrease symptoms, lower relapse rates and improve quality of life; however, access to psychotherapy is limited. Mental health technologies such as smartphone applications are being studied as a means to increase access to and enhance the effectiveness of adjunctive psychotherapies for bipolar disorder. These studies have demonstrated that individuals with bipolar disorder find this intervention format acceptable, but our understanding of how people utilize and integrate these tools into their behavior change and maintenance processes remains limited. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to explore how individuals with bipolar disorder perceive and utilize a smartphone intervention for health behavior change and maintenance. METHODS Individuals with bipolar disorder participated in a pilot study of LiveWell, a smartphone-based self-management intervention. At the end of the study, all participants completed in-depth qualitative exit interviews. The behavior change framework developed to organize the intervention design was used to deductively code behavioral targets and determinants involved in target engagement and inductive coding was used to identify themes not captured by this framework. RESULTS In terms of behavioral targets, participants emphasized the importance of managing mood episode related signs and symptoms. They also discussed the importance of maintaining regular routines, sleep duration, and medication adherence. In addition, participants emphasized that receiving support from a coach as well as seeking and receiving assistance from family, friends and providers was important for managing behavioral targets and staying well. In terms of determinants, participants stressed the important role of monitoring for their behavior change and maintenance efforts. Participants indicated that monitoring facilitated self-awareness and reflection which they felt was valuable for staying well. Some participants also felt that the intervention facilitated learning information necessary for managing bipolar disorder but others felt that the information provided was too basic. CONCLUSIONS In addition to addressing acceptability, satisfaction, and engagement, person-based design of mental health technologies can be used to understand how people experience the impact of these technologies on their behavior change and maintenance efforts. This understanding may then be used to guide ongoing intervention development. In this study, participants discussed their perceptions that managing signs and symptoms and maintaining regular routines, sleep duration, and medication adherence were important for staying well and that monitoring played an important role in these efforts. These perceptions aligned with the intervention's primary behavioral targets and use of a monitoring tool as a core intervention feature. However, participants also highlighted how the intervention encouraged involving family and friends in their change efforts. While content addressing building and engaging supports was included in the intervention, this was not a primary intervention target. Participant feedback thus indicates that developing additional content and tools to address building and engaging social support may be an important avenue for improving LiveWell. Our findings suggest that using a comprehensive behavior change framework to understand participant perceptions of their behavior change and maintenance efforts may help facilitate ongoing intervention development. Within the commercial sector, energy managers and building operators have a large impact over their organizations’ energy use. However, they mostly focus on technology solutions and retrofits, rather than human or corporate behaviors, and how to change them. This gap in targeted commercial sector research and behavioral interventions provides a great opportunity which is currently not being addressed. This paper presents a field research pilot where an empirical behavior change research process was applied and taught to commercial energy users in Ontario, Canada. This course served to fill an identified market gap and to improve commercial energy managers’ literacy in behavioral science theory and techniques. A needs assessment identified a clear gap in behavioral training for energy managers, and high interest in the course further proved out the market opportunity for professional training on how to design, implement and evaluate behavior change interventions. Evaluation results identified positive feedback in terms of course reaction, self-reported learning and behavioral outcomes, and tangible results when course participants returned to work to apply their learnings. Evaluation results suggest that such training fills a vital gap in the current Strategic Energy Management (SEM) landscape, and could unlock significant savings in the commercial energy sector.
