The Italian Society of Agronomy (SIA) has changed the Editor in Chief and the Editorial board of the Italian Journal of Agronomy (IJA). The new Editorial board is being integrated with new expertise and includes three Associate editors: Michael D. Casler from USDA-ARS, USA, Davide Cammarano from Purdue University, USA and Michele Rinaldi from Council for Agricultural Research and Economics, Italy, the former co-editor. The Editorial board is redeveloping the Journal with a more pro-active publishing policy, that is consistent to the changing editorial demand of agronomy scientists worldwide. The international scientific publishing industry is facing a sharp transition, pulled by the increasing demand of rapid publication in the publish-or-perish or highly-cited paradigm and pushed towards full open access publishing by research funders and end-users. Minimizing the time between manuscript submission and paper publication is threatening the quality of the peer-review process, which is constrained by time pressure on highly qualified scientists, who end up being overloaded with reviews and editorial duties. The open access scientific journal industry is struggling between increasing the impact factor/cite score of the journals and maximizing the number of published articles, which is directly proportional to the publisher’s business. This is generating an increasing number of open access scientific publications worldwide: +75% between 2008-10 and 2015-17 in the ‘Agronomy and crop science’ subject category (Source: Scopus) while the non-open access publications in the same domain and time span increased by only +27%. This situation and the evolution of long term open-theme research funding schemes into short-term projectified finalized research funding programs are deeply influencing the topics of research in Agronomy. Long term agronomic facilities and field scale research are becoming rare and are often being replaced by short-term easily-published studies. However, international scientific exchanges are facilitating the development of permanent regional and global networks of researchers (e.g. AgMip, Global Research Alliance) that are developing unprecedented long-term research efforts on global issues around agronomy, involving hundreds of post-docs and young researchers worldwide. In this developing context, the Italian Journal of Agronomy, own by the Italian Society of Agronomy, a non-profit scientific organization, is developing a new editorial policy to contribute to the progress of agronomic science through an open-access, low-cost and authoritative scientific literature space, with particular attention to young scientists. There are number of reasons why an agronomy scientist should publish an article in the Italian Journal of Agronomy, including: i) to get a rapid and careful peer review assessment of the submissions by an authoritative editorial board with specific expertise in Agronomy and receive careful support on how to address major revisions when required; ii) to ensure maximum visibility for published articles through the open access system; iii) to contribute to the agronomic scientific literature through an open access Scopus/WOS scientific Journal owned by a non-profit scientific society at a fair price; iv) to compete for the SIA grants and prizes for best articles or best reviewers of the year. The new editorial policy of IJA includes a more pro-active publishing strategy aiming at widening the arena of international scientists contributing to the journal’s scope, including invited papers and special conditions for the publication of special issues on cutting-edge agronomy topics, promotion of the journal during scientific conferences and events, rewarding of the best articles and peer-reviewers contributing to the journal’s development. IJA is solely focused on the free diffusion of agroecosystem science, not on any other business: we trust that authors and readers will appreciate that IJA’s editorial board members work toward this mission without compensation and that the article fee is necessary only to cover the publisher’s net costs. We are very grateful to the past and new Editorial board and all peer reviewers for their invaluable contribution to the development of our Journal. Researchers rely on a system of scientometric ratings when they assess the development of a scientific journal. This approach does not allow us to understand the reasons for the results achieved and the specifics of the business model of the publication. The paper describes the study of scientific journals through a prism of the ecosystem approach. The hypothesis is tested that a highly rated scientific journal, its authors and readers together represent a closed ecosystem with specific properties. The research methodology is based on the author’s toolkit which consists on the calculation of ecosystem closeness indicators: the share of affiliated authors, their correlation with the average influence of a paper, diversity and fluidity. The authors suggest that low rates of variability and diversity indicate a closed type of journal ecosystem. Generalization and interpretation of empirical results was carried out by the method of cluster analysis. The information base is a panel metadata of 20 scientific Russian journals for 2013–2020, which have the maximum Science Index ratings on economic and management fields. Also, the authors analyzed the data on the number and level of concentration publications by the editorial board members and staff of the holding institution, as well as the intensity of publications of individual authors. There have been identified four clusters of studied journals being as a base of the empirical verification. The first and third clusters are characterized by the highest rate of closeness. The lowest level of variability in the sample has been recorded for the third cluster. The journals of the second and fourth clusters have a conditionally closed ecosystem and have been characterized by a top-rated of variability. They are characterized by a low share of publications by affiliated authors. However, it was revealed that there had been a group of authors who had a significant impact on the journal’s ecosystem development. The study results can be of value for the strategies formation of scientific journals development.

The article examines the problems faced by traditional scientific journals in the field of humanities in Bulgaria. The article is dedicated to the journal "Bulgarian Speech", a scientific journal for linguistics and language culture which combines the scientific approach and the search for popular topics. The history and the concept of the journal, the traditions in its publishing and the most significant authors who have published in it are presented. The text deals with the problems faced by its editorial board nowadays in the context of the requirements for the publications of researchers. The main problem is that some journals, despite their long traditions and prestige, find themselves in the disadvantage of asking authors for materials in order to realize the next issue. Questions are discussed whether it is possible to preserve the traditional layout of the journal and at the same time to meet the requirements for reference in certain databases. Is a qualitative change needed and if so, will this not change the purpose of the journal, which is to reach the non-professional audience? The possible perspectives for the development of the strategies of the journals in the direction of international databases, as well as the requirements to the authors of the publications in them are considered.

Biochemia Medica is an open access journal that does not charge manuscript processing or publishing. All editorial staff are continuously educated and directed to follow the highest ethical and scholarly publishing standards in all steps of the manuscript processing. They are all laboratory medicine professionals, who apart from their regular jobs, are in charge of different phases in Journal processing as volunteers. The publisher of the Journal is scientific and professional association of laboratory medicine professionals, Croatian Society of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory medicine (CSMBLM). During November and December 2018, without knowledge of the editorial staff, unknown perpetrator(s) downloaded a respectable number of articles published in Biochemia Medica as PDF and launched an illegal web page under the same journal name with downloaded articles. Although this was a very harmful experience, we have learned a lot from it and we would like to share this with scientific journals’ community. Therefore, we would like to share this harmful experience, and to present a short workflow on how to manage situations like this if it will be necessary for any scientific journal in the future.

With their broad scope, high publishing volume, a peer review process based on the scientific soundness of the content, and an open access model, mega journals have become an important part of scholarly publishing. The main aim of this paper is to determine the most important factor that influenced researchers’ decisions to submit their academic work to these type of journal. To this end, an online survey has been disseminated from November 2016 to August 2017, targeting the corresponding authors of the European Scientific Journal, ESJ. Data from 413 corresponding authors was collected. The focus was mainly on how they discover the journal and what led them to submit a paper to the journal. However, questions concerning their satisfaction with the peer review procedure were also part of the survey. The results have shown that a recommendation of a colleague is not only the main channel through which authors found out about the journal, but is also the major reason they decided to submit their paper to a mega-journal. Furthermore, the quality of the editorial board of the journal, the strong portfolio of papers and the open access concept are also significant factors in encouraging submission to a mega-journal. A majority of the respondents are satisfied with the communication and peer review procedure of the mega-journal, which might encourage new submissions in the future.

The issue of the relationship between Islam with the gender and human rights is a matter of praxis whose development can be witnessed through various channels, one of which is a scientific journal. Through scientific journals, the issues that are of concern to academics in the university environment are recognized. This study aims to analyze the extent to which issues of mainstreaming gender, human rights, and Islam can be summarized in the Jurnal Musawa, Jurnal Perempuan, and various journals in the Directory Open Access Journal (DOAJ) which   also   reflect the contemporary problems of society. Specifically, this research also produced a strategic understanding for the management of scientific journals in order to be able to adjust its function as a medium for academic dissemination with the latest developments in the fast-moving scientific world. This study is qualitative research by descriptive approach. The results of mapping and analysis show that the relation of women with legal, violence, and political issues is the main concern of academics. The emergence of these issues is seen as more than just a response to various injustices and human rights violations against women and children that occurred in Indonesia. In addition to the three issues above, other issues that emerge with high intensity and are evenly distributed in each journal are child marriage, feminism in the form of women’s movements, women’s leadership, or women’s positioning in local wisdom.]

In order to disseminate the findings and recommendations from their studies, researchers publish papers in scientific journals in their subject area. Research communities thus emerge as a result of the communication between authors who cite other relevant papers. This study focuses on the relationships between Spanish and English research communities in the specific field of Educational Technology. We explore as hypotheses whether there are signs of scientific journal communication between authors in these two communities, and if the English authors reciprocate citations by Spanish authors. In order to verify them, a social network analysis was conducted by considering outgoing and incoming citations in eight open access journals (four in English and four in Spanish) published over ten years (2007-2016). The sample includes 3,407 articles, which were analysed using UCINET and Gephi software. The results show partial confirmation of the hypotheses, since two separate research communities were recognized, with almost no communication between them. However, the Spanish community was presented as more connected than the English one. We interpret these results by considering not only language factors, but also the journal roots and the particular subject field under consideration. Finally, we highlight some general recommendations to enhance future communication between these two education research communities.
