The 2016 is remembered as the year that showed to the world how dangerous distributed Denial of Service attacks can be. Gauge of the disruptiveness of DDoS attacks is the number of bots involved: the bigger the botnet, the more powerful the attack. This character, along with the increasing availability of connected and insecure IoT devices, makes DDoS and IoT the perfect pair for the malware industry. In this paper we present the main idea behind AntibIoTic, a palliative solution to prevent DoS attacks perpetrated through IoT devices.

In this chapter we discuss Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks in networks such as the Internet, which have become significantly prevalent over the recent years. We explain how DDoS attacks are performed and consider the ideal solution characteristics for defending against the DDoS attacks in the Internet. Then we present different research directions and thoroughly analyse some of the important techniques that have been recently proposed. Our analysis confirms that none of the proposed techniques can efficiently and completely counteract the DDoS attacks. Furthermore, as networks become more complex, they become even more vulnerable to DoS attacks when some of the proposed techniques are deployed in the Internet. The gap between the tools that can generate DDoS attacks and the tools that can detect or prevent DDoS attacks continues to increase. Finally, we briefly outline some best practices that the users are urged to follow to minimise the DoS attacks in the Internet.

Abstract Cybersecurity attacks resulting in loss of availability of cloud services can have significantly higher impact than those in the traditional stand-alone enterprise setups. Therefore, availability attacks, such as Denial of Service attacks (DoS); Distributed DoS attacks (DDoS) and Economical Denial of Sustainability (EDoS) attacks receive increasingly more attention. This paper surveys existing DDoS attacks analyzing the principles, ways of launching and their variants. Then, current mitigation systems are critically discussed. Based on the identification of the weak points, the paper proposes a new mitigation system named as DDoS-Mitigation System (DDoS-MS) that attempts to overcome the identified gap. The proposed framework is evaluated, and an enhanced version of the proposed system called Enhanced DDoS-MS is presented. In the end, the paper presents some future directions of the proposed framework.

Abstract Internet of Things (IoT) opens up the possibility of agglomerations of different types of devices, Internet and human elements to provide extreme interconnectivity among them towards achieving a completely connected world of things. The mainstream adaptation of IoT technology and its widespread use has also opened up a whole new platform for cyber perpetrators mostly used for distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. In this paper, under the influence of internal and external nodes, a two - fold epidemic model is developed where attack on IoT devices is first achieved and then IoT based distributed attack of malicious objects on targeted resources in a network has been established. This model is mainly based on Mirai botnet made of IoT devices which came into the limelight with three major DDoS attacks in 2016. The model is analyzed at equilibrium points to find the conditions for their local and global stability. Impact of external nodes on the over-all model is critically analyzed. Numerical simulations are performed to validate the vitality of the model developed.

The term internet of thing (IoT) has gained much popularity in the last decade. Which can be defined as various connected devices over the internet. IoT has rapidly  spread to include all aspects of our lives. For instance, smart houses, smart cities, and variant wearable devices. IoT devices work to do their desired goals, which is to develop a person life with his/her minimal involvement. At the same time, IoT devices have many weaknesses, which attackers exploit to affect these devices security. Denial of Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) are considered the most common attacks that strike IoT security. The main aim of these attacks is to make victim systems down and inaccessible for legitimate users by malicious malware. This paper objective is to discuss and review security issues related to DoS/DDoS Attacks and their counter measures i.e. prevention based on IoT devices layers structure.

This article describes how in the summer of 1999, the Computer Incident Advisory Capability first reported about Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack incidents and the nature of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks in a distributed environment that eliminates the availability of resources or data on a computer network. DDoS attack exhausts the network resources and disturbs the legitimate user. This article provides an explanation on DDoS attacks and nature of these attacks against Smartphones and Wi-Fi Technology and presents a taxonomy of various defense mechanisms. The smartphone is chosen for this study, as they have now become a necessity rather than a luxury item for the common people.

This chapter reviews the evolution of the traditional internet into the Internet of Things (IoT). The characteristics and application of the IoT are also reviewed, together with its security concerns in terms of distributed denial of service attacks. The chapter further investigates the state-of-the-art in data mining techniques for Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks targeting the various infrastructures. The chapter explores the characteristics and pervasiveness of DDoS attacks. It also explores the motives, mechanisms and techniques used to execute a DDoS attack. The chapter further investigates the current data mining techniques that are used to combat and detect these attacks, their advantages and disadvantages are explored. Future direction of the research is also provided.

An increase of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks launched by botnets such as Mirai has raised public awareness regarding potential security weaknesses in the Internet of Things (IoT). Devices are an attractive target for attackers because of their large number and due to most devices being online 24/7. In addition, many traditional security mechanisms are not applicable for resource constraint IoT devices. The importance of security for cyber-physical systems (CPS) is even higher, as most systems process confidential data or control a physical process that could be harmed by attackers. While industrial IoT is a hot topic in research, not much focus is put on ensuring information security. Therefore, this paper intends to give an overview of current research regarding the security of data in industrial CPS. In contrast to other surveys, this work will provide an overview of the big CPS security picture and not focus on special aspects.

This chapter describes how the consequence and hazards showcased by Denial of Service attacks have resulted in the surge of research studies, commercial software and innovative cogitations. Of the DoS attacks, the incursion of its variant DDoS can be quite severe. A botnet, on the other hand, is a group of hijacked devices that are connected by internet. These botnet servers are used to perform DDoS attacks effectively. In this chapter, the authors attempt to provide an insight into DoS attacks and botnets, focusing on their analysis and mitigation. They also propose a defense mechanism to mitigate our system from botnet DDoS attacks. This is achieved by using a through access list based configuration. The artful engineering of malware is a weapon used for online crime and the ideas behind it are profit-motivated. The last section of the chapter provides an understanding of the WannaCry Ransomware Attack which locked computers in more than 150 countries.

The problem of identifying Distributed Denial of Service (DDos) attacks is fundamentally a classification problem in machine learning. In relevance to Cloud Computing, the task of identification of DDoS attacks is a significantly challenging problem because of computational complexity that has to be addressed. Fundamentally, a Denial of Service (DoS) attack is an intentional attack attempted by attackers from single source which has an implicit intention of making an application unavailable to the target stakeholder. For this to be achieved, attackers usually stagger the network bandwidth, halting system resources, thus causing denial of access for legitimate users. Contrary to DoS attacks, in DDoS attacks, the attacker makes use of multiple sources to initiate an attack. DDoS attacks are most common at network, transportation, presentation and application layers of a seven-layer OSI model. In this paper, the research objective is to study the problem of DDoS attack detection in a Cloud environment by considering the most popular CICIDS 2017 benchmark dataset and applying multiple regression analysis for building a machine learning model to predict DDoS and Bot attacks through considering a Friday afternoon traffic logfile.
