This study depicts the phenomena of learners’ motivation in English language learning at the tertiary level in our country. This study deals with whether learners are integrative or instrumental motivated. This study also focuses on which type’s motivation is effective for learners. For this study, data is collected through questionnaire from the learners at the tertiary level. The major findings of the study is that most of the learners are integrative motivated in learning English at their tertiary level. Most of the learners think integrative motivation is effective in English language learning than instrumental motivation. However, very few numbers of learners are instrumental motivated, which can be solve by understanding them about the effectiveness of integrative motivation.

The emergence of today’s role of English as an international language (EIL) and as a global lingua franca (ELF) makes English language education important in many countries. In Indonesia, for example, it has been growing a number of schools ranging from kindergarten to university level which use English as the medium of instructions.Every subject in school curriculum has different objectives including English subject. But some students donot realize that, learning English is really important in their life. It makes them unmotivated in learning English. Lack of learners’ motivation is believed as one of the primary problems of English language teaching, many of them take it as a difficult lesson to learn. As a result, they skip class, and when they attend the class, it is not because they want to learn English but likely because they fear of failure. Moreover, lots of them may lack of attention during class, chatting with classmates, doodling in their note books or gasp in their textbooks. This present study aims at discovering the factors that influence the students’ achievement in English language learning by using linguistic and Al-Qur’an theory. The conclusion of the study is the factors that influence the students’ achievement in English language learning are the students’ intelligence, motivation, school facilities, policies of government and the principal, family, and environment

In this paper the author focuses on the motivation of Saudi Arabian students in learning English at the tertiary level. To show the significance of motivation in this paper the author uses Gardner’s socio-educational model of SLA. It centers on government initiatives, parents’ inspiration, classroom atmosphere, and teachers’ inspirations at elementary and tertiary levels in English language learning. Here a questionnaire has been used to collect data. The attitudinal scale is used with close-ended questions on a four points Likert scale. In the survey it has been revealed that English should be taught from grade one at elementary level and qualified English teachers are required there. In terms of motivation it has been recognized that family awareness plays a crucial role. It is also found that parents should care about the language efficiency of their children rather than grades in examinations.

This research explores the important activities and principles of the teaching of drama in learning English as a foreign language. This research is qualitative in nature and the analysis is based on theoretical grounds and a strong theoretical framework. It concentrates on the brief history of drama in education, its basic principles, techniques, and the possibilities and advantages that drama in education brings into English language learning. The aim of this research, Drama in Learning English as a Foreign Language, is not only to introduce drama in education to the readers but also present drama in the context of English language learning, and subsequently support the concept of drama being an English language learning method. I define drama, its general concepts, principles, and aims. I concentrate on the role of drama in learning English as a foreign language, its techniques, and the benefits that drama brings into the learning. This research is helpful for the teachers to understand the drama and activates related to it in the classroom.


Accurate pronunciation has a vital role in English language learning as it can help learners to avoid misunderstanding in communication. However, EFL learners in many contexts, especially at the University of Phan Thiet, still encounter many difficulties in pronouncing English correctly. Therefore, this study endeavors to explore English-majored students’ perceptions towards the role of pronunciation in English language learning and examine their pronunciation practicing strategies (PPS). It involved 155 English-majored students at the University of Phan Thiet who answered closed-ended questionnaires and 18 English-majored students who participated in semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that students strongly believed in the important role of pronunciation in English language learning; however, they sometimes employed PPS for their pronunciation improvement. Furthermore, the results showed that participants tended to use naturalistic practicing strategies and formal practicing strategies with sounds, but they overlooked strategies such as asking for help and cooperating with peers. Such findings could contribute further to the understanding of how students perceive the role of pronunciation and their PPS use in the research’s context and other similar ones. This study aimed (1) to analyze motivation’s factor that affects English Language Education Students in achieving learning English both in instrumental and integrative motivation; (2) to analyze the major factor of motivation that affect students; and (3) to analyze how the major factor of motivation influence the students in achieving their goal in learning English. The survey was employed as a method of data collection through questionnaires and interviews. Both instruments consisted of instrumental and integrative motivation, which each dimension involves three factors of motivation. The results showed that English Language Education students were affected by six motivation factors. Those are academic, social, economic, attitude toward learning the target language, attitude toward the target language community, and desire to learn the target language. Among those motivation factors, the academic and attitude toward learning the target language were the major factor that affects students in achieving their goal in language learning.

Language is a medium that is used to convey information both orally or in writing from one individual to another individual. In Indonesia we use Indonesian as a national language and unifying language of our nation. However, over time, Indonesian language began to experience a shift in its use and was replaced by English. Language learning can also be obtained through social media namely Instagram. The main purpose of this article is to identify the role of social media Instagram as a strategy to maintain the existence of Indonesian language. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative approach from the account @bahasbahasa_. Based on the research, the data taken from the account @ bahasbahasa_ turns out that Instagram plays a role in improving the existence of Indonesian language. This is evident from some of his submissions which show how the Indonesian language is used properly and correctly. Data is classified based on the type of content sent by the account, namely the use of punctuation, standard words, and affixes. With the existence of this article, the researcher hopes that readers can find out the role of the Instagram in maintaining the existence of the language and using the best instagram for learning.

<p><em>The purpose of this study is to investigate the attitudes and motivation of first-year Turkish undergraduates toward English language learning as a foreign language. The study was carried out with 90 students majoring in business studies at Cag University, Mersin in Turkey by administering a survey designed on a five-point Likert scale with 43 items including demographic questions about the learners’ background information such as gender, age, and how long they have been learning English. The items on the survey were chosen from Dörnyei and Csizér (2006) in a variety of Hungarian researches and from a recently designed questionnaire by Ryan (2005). The domains used for the purpose of the study were: integrativeness, attitudes to L2 community, cultural interest, attitudes to learning English, criterion measures, ideal L2 self, ought-to L2 self, family influence, instrumentality (promotion and prevention), and fear of assimilation. </em></p> <p><em>The data collected were analysed through descriptive statistics in SPSS statistical program. The results revealed that Turkish first-year university students learn English as a foreign language mostly for instrumental reasons, and it also showed that integrative motivation is dominant motivational orientation for the participants in some</em> degree.</p>

Malaysians have long realised the importance of being competent in English as one of the success factors in attaining their future goals. However, English is taught as a second language in Malaysia, and it is not easy to teach under such a foreign context, because authentic input may not exist beyond the classroom, especially in Chinese private schools. In this scenario, English is learnt as a subject with 10 sessions per week, which is considered insufficient for students to master the language effectively. Past research highlights the significance of motivation in English language acquisition. Motivated students tend to put in more effort in their academic endeavours by showing more persistence in their learning process. The purpose of the study was to identify and analyse whether instrumental or integrative motivation plays a more important role in promoting Form Four ESL students’ English language learning. Furthermore, examine the areas of problems that affect ESL students’ motivation towards English language learning. This study was a qualitative case study that used focus group interviews to elicit data from 12 students in a secondary school in Penang. The findings of this research indicate that students are more instrumentally motivated than integratively motivated in ESL learning. Instrumental motivation is found to have a greater impact on students’ English language learning. This research also highlights that vocabulary and grammar are the biggest areas of problems that are encountered by students during their ESL learning process, which further influence their speaking and writing skills.
