Studying language attitudes is popular, as the language which is investigated has numerous sociocultural functions, and knowledge of language attitudes helps to achieve success in language policy planning. Moreover, influences on linguistic personality and language attitudes allow evaluation not only of the loyalty to a particular language, but also the functional value of each of these. The study investigated the non-intellective correlates affecting the sociolinguistic competence of teacher education students, with a focus on the analysis of their contexts relative to social experiences, language attitude, and use of linguistic forms in different situations. It also determined the common difficulties they experience in the use of English in both oral and written forms. Descriptive mixed methods were utilized, with a validated questionnaire serving as primary instrument to gather relevant data from 331 teacher education students from different fields of specialization. Focus group discussions were conducted to activate the students’ awareness of non-intellective correlates and extract emerging issues in language use. The analysis of the quantitative data together with the coded and categorized transcriptions revealed that while the students generally have a positive attitude towards the use of the English language, they rarely use varied linguistic forms adaptive to different social contexts, implying the need to work on their adaptive capacities in using English for various purposes. Most of the issues they encounter are psychological and socio-physical in nature, while limited vocabulary, over-consciousness in grammar use, and lack of confidence affect their skills most. It was recommended that contextualized activities be developed for integration in the communication courses to highlight the authentic use of language in different social contexts.

Abstract Although language attitudes are frequently investigated, how these attitudes change over time is studied less frequently, despite providing an interesting window into the link between attitudes and ideologies. Conducted some twenty years since the first studies on this topic, the current study provides an updated perspective into language attitudes toward the use of Roman-alphabeted Greek (henceforth, Greeklish) in emails and SMS messages exchanged between Greek native speakers. Adapting the matched guise methodology commonly used in language attitude research to visual stimuli, we collected data from 60 participants of different ages and genders. Overall, their attitudes toward Greeklish were markedly negative, confirming negative attitudes already expressed twenty years prior but also extending them. We propose that technological and demographic but also ideological factors underlie the negative attitudes toward Greeklish expressed by Greek native speakers today.

[This study emphasises on the language attitude and the defence of the border community identity at Kampung Telok Melano, Lundu (Sarawak, Malaysia) and Desa Temajuk, Sambas (Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia). The primary objective of the study is to observe the language attitude and the creation of an identity through language to form two distinct different identities. The collection of data for the study is based on a qualitative approach through recorded conversations, interviews, and participant observations. In this preliminary observation, a total of 12 informants where 6 people from Kampung Telok Melano and another 6 people from Desa Temajuk were selected based on the quota sampling method. Interview questions were framed according to a few domains based on the three characteristics of language attitude proposed by Garvin and Mathiot (1968) which are language loyalty, language pride and awareness of the norms. The findings of this study indicated that the language loyalty and awareness of the norms specifically towards the mother tongue and national language are high in these two communities. In the aspect of defence of the border community identity, the study had found that the Kampung Telok Melano community original identity were Sambas Malays who had since shifted to Sarawak Malays since the formation of Malaysia in 1963. This preliminary study had prepared the basis for further studies related to language issues and the identity of the border communities at the southwestern region of Sarawak.]

Background: This study examined the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Attitude toward Physical Activity Scale (APAS) using a cross-sectional design. Methods: The sample consisted of 692 primary students in China (boy 52.6%, girl 47.4%). The mean age of the participants was 9.4 years (SD = 0.92). Psychometric properties of the 57-item APAS was examined using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results: The hypothesized seven factors model was supported by CFA (CFI = 0.912, TLI = 0.901, SRMR = 0.041, RMSEA = 0.029) after 22 items were removed and the inclusion of seven residual covariance for items loaded on the same factor. Cronbach’s alphas of the scales ranged between 0.50 and 0.76. The composite reliability (CR) was between 0.50 and 0.75. All inter-factor correlation coefficient was less than 0.85. Conclusions: Findings provided empirical evidence that the Chinese version of the APAS has adequate psychometric properties for assessing attitudes of primary school children in China toward physical activity.

One of the several ways writers of comedy films amuse the audience by inducing laughter is the use of language. It is against this background that Fúnkẹ́ Akíndélé created a linguistic identity for Jẹ́nífà, the protagonist in Jẹ́nífà's Diary, a popular Nigerian television series created in 2015 still active and ongoing. The most apparent thing that caught the audience’s attention is the grammatical errors in Jẹ́nífà’s English. Little is known about the use of Yorùbá in her speech acts. This paper, therefore, examines the use of Yoruba language in Jenifa’s verbal acts in the English television series. The paper posits that the use of Yorùbá in Jẹ́nífà’s speech is used among their things, to (a) create humour; (b) hurl insults on people; (c) correct the negative language attitude of some educated parents that have forbidden the use of Yorùbá language in their homes and (d) adult language habits die hard.
