In this analysis we present a whole population network which uses administrative data to construct a network incorporating 1.4 billion relationships between the 17 million inhabitants of the Netherlands. Relationships are identified between individuals who live in the same household, live close to each other, work for the same company, attend the same educational institution, or belong to the same extended family. This network has properties that are rare in observed social networks, which opens up new applications for network science in the social sciences. To demonstrate the applications of such a network, we use a random walk approach to estimate segregation of individuals from differing educational backgrounds and whether specific types of relationships increase or decrease this segregation. The results suggest that relationships between people in the same household greatly increase segregation whilst work, school and neighborhood networks relationships increase exposure to individuals with different backgrounds. The size of these effects is context dependent. Further applications of a whole population network are also discussed

User recommendation aims at recommending users with potential interests in the social network. Previous works have mainly focused on the undirected social networks with symmetric relationship such as friendship, whereas recent advances have been made on the asymmetric relationship such as the following and followed by relationship. Among the few existing direction-aware user recommendation methods, the random walk strategy has been widely adopted to extract the asymmetric proximity between users. However, according to our analysis on real-world directed social networks, we argue that the asymmetric proximity captured by existing random walk based methods are insufficient due to the inbalance in-degree and out-degree of nodes. To tackle this challenge, we propose InfoWalk, a novel informative walk strategy to efficiently capture the asymmetric proximity solely based on random walks. By transferring the direction information into the weights of each step, InfoWalk is able to overcome the limitation of edges while simultaneously maintain both the direction and proximity. Based on the asymmetric proximity captured by InfoWalk, we further propose the qualitative (DNE-L) and quantitative (DNE-T) directed network embedding methods, capable of preserving the two properties in the embedding space. Extensive experiments conducted on six real-world benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed DNE model over several state-of-the-art approaches in various tasks.

This chapter presents a future vision for healthcare, which will involve smart devices, Internet of Things, and social networks, that make this vision a reality. The authors present the necessary background by introducing the Social Internet of Things paradigm. Agent technology seems to be a promising approach in the adoption of the Social Internet of Things in collaborative environments with increased autonomy and agility, like healthcare is. Also, it is examined challenges to the adoption of the Social Internet of Things in healthcare in order to facilitate new applications and services in more effective and efficient ways.

In what follows, I begin by asking a paradigmatic question to clarify some problems of definition (I). Next, Crane Brinton's Anatomy of Revolution is examined as a scientific definition of revolution (II). Its application to the Netherlands revolt concludes the essay (III). Many logical problems are oversimplified and some are ignored altogether. This is done to keep the lid down on several Pandora's boxes, notably those labelled methodology in the social sciences, language philosophy, and historical laws, about which a great deal, some of it relevant here, has been written already. At the same time, I am concerned with the complexity of the problems raised and with suggesting that the ways in which definitions of historical events can be used deserve as much attention as the definitions themselves.

This paper argues that quantitative science studies should frame their data and analyses with middle-range sociological theories and concepts. We illustrate this argument with reference to the “sociology of professions,” a middle-range theoretical framework developed by Chicago sociologist Andrew Abbott. Using this framework, we counter the claim that the use of bibliometric indicators in research assessment is pervasive in all advanced economies. Rather, our comparison between the Netherlands and Italy reveals major differences in the national design of bibliometric research assessment: The Netherlands follows a model of bibliometric professionalism, whereas Italy follows a centralized bureaucratic model that co-opts academic elites. We conclude that applying the sociology of professions framework to a broader set of countries would be worthwhile, allowing the emerging bibliometric profession to be charted in a comprehensive, and preferably quantitative, fashion. We also briefly discuss other sociological middle-range concepts that could potentially guide empirical analyses in quantitative science studies.

AbstractThis article analyses Frank Ankersmit’s Dutch-language writings in the context of Dutch debates on historical theory. In the 1970s and 1980s historical theory became a flourishing discipline in the Netherlands; it was a compulsory part of all history programmes in the country, and all history departments employed one or more historical theorists. The Dutch theoretical debates of the 1970s and 1980s mainly dealt with the relation between history and the social sciences. In these debates Ankersmit defended the traditional historicist conception of historiography, while developing philosophical views that would remain important in his later work. Especially relevant in this respect is his critique of linguistic transcendentalism. This view is already present in his earliest writings in the 1970s, but it also informs his work on historical representation of the late 1980s and 1990s, and it is very important in his analysis of historical experience, which has its roots in his Dutch writings of the mid-1990s.

Palabras claves:turismo, gastronomía, festividades, fernet,Argentina   Argentina is the country that consumes the largest volumes of fernet in the world. In 2012, a popular festival around fernet was attempted in Mendiolaza (Province of Córdoba, Argentina) to break a Guinness record. However, a dispute that began between various actors (civil society, governments and company) would end up burying the Fernet Fest. In spite of not having said event, the debates expressed through different press in that context enriched, from the social sciences, the different edges of the discussion around gastronomy and tourism. The objective of this work was to analyze the emerging arguments that arose around the mentioned debate in the framework of the eventual realization of the Fernet Fest. Methodologically, virtual ethnography was used to analyze articles from various newspapers, as well as from internet sites and social networks. Through the analysis of the different voices, it was possible to delineate the main arguments that arose in favor and against the realization of the festival, which we consider important when thinking about the festivities linked to tourism, whose main components are alcoholic drinks. Key words:tourism, gastronomy, festivities, fernet, Argentina
