Hiunde (Boro) rice has not been popularized due to least attention given to this crop in Nepal. Inorder to estimate the production function of this crop, a field survey in Morang district during2002/2003 was carried out using a semi-structured questionnaire. The primary information wascollected through face to face interview. The result of the empirical model of Cobb-Douglasproduction function revealed the model significant at 1% level and defined 95% variation inHiunde rice production due to variation in independent variables included in the model. Thecoefficient of area, nitrogen, phosphorous, and tractor hour were found significant at 1% levelwhile the dummy for more than 10 times of irrigation was significant at 5% level and up to 10times of irrigation and potash was significant at 10% level. The effect of human and bullocklabor was found non-significant. Among the sampled farmers the average cropping intensity was194% and average yield of Hiunde rice was 4802.50 kg/ha. On an average 131 kg of nitrogen,phosphorous and potash was applied for one ha and 15 irrigations in average. The net benefitfrom Hiunde rice was found to be Rs. 14507.41/ha with 1.73 benefit cost ratio. About 31% costwas incurred in land preparation and transplanting which was highest among the operations. This study was undertaken to determine and compare the profitability of Boro rice and potato production. In total 60 farmers of which 30 Boro rice growers and 30 potato growers were selected randomly from four villages of Gouripur Upazila in Mymensingh district. Descriptive as well as statistical analysis were done to achieve the objectives of the study. The Cobb-Douglas production function was used to determine the effects of individual inputs on Boro rice and potato production. The major findings of the study were that the cultivation of Boro rice and potato was profitable from the view point of farmers. The per hectare total return from Boro rice and potato were Tk. 83,320.00 and Tk. 2,62,625.22 respectively. The gross cost of Boro rice and potato production were Tk. 54,202.74 and 1,20,221.71 respectively. Again the net return from Boro rice and potato were Tk. 24,117.26 and 1,42,403.51 respectively. The Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) was 1.41 and 2.18 respectively for Boro rice and potato production. The results indicated that potato production was more profitable than Boro rice production. The study was conducted in Chandel district of Manipur state to maximise the productivity of Rapeseed-mustard under rice fallow. Rapeseed-mustard has great potential under residual moisture after the harvest of Kharif rice in North Eastern states. It is a major source of income especially to the marginal and small farmers in rainfed areas of Manipur. Sample consisted of randomly selected 29 farmers who were growing rapeseed-mustard under FLDs. The results revealed that improved technology recorded a mean yield of 8.77 q/ha which was 20.55 per cent higher than obtained under farmers’ practice (7.27 q/ha). The study also showed that reduction in technology index from 10.90 per cent during 2017-18 to 6.49 per cent during 2019-20 exhibited the feasibility of demonstrated technology. The lower value of technology index, the more is the feasibility of technology. Further, it was found that the adoption of improved technologies not only increased the yield but also yield attributing traits of rapeseed-mustard and benefit cost ratio. Hence, there is a need to disseminate the improved technologies amongst the farmers with effective extension methods like training and demonstrations to utilise the rice fallow areas for increasing the cropping intensity as well as to increase crop production and productivity. The farmers’ should be encouraged to adopt the recommended package of practices for realizing higher returns.

The "System of Rice Intensification"(SRI) represents a sustainable alternative to improve household yields and incomes. This study aimed to evaluate the yields and the profitability of the SRI and the Traditional Practices (TP) in Ziguinchor district, Senegal. A directed sampling based on criteria for selecting the system used and the cultivated varieties common to both systems was applied to collect the yield parameters and yields of paddy rice. Thus, 18 producers in the Badiate, Essyl, and Fanda sites were selected, nine per system and four 1 m2 yield squares were installed in each selected producer plot. A total of 72 yield squares, 36 per system, were installed, and an individual questionnaire was randomly administered to 55 producers using at least one of the systems to collect data on rice production and costs. The yield parameters including the number of fertile tillers per m2, the number of spikes, the weight of the 1000 grains are significantly higher (p<0.05) in the SRI including yield compared to the traditional system. Transplanting density and plant duration are higher in TP (26±5.6 plants/m2 and 26 days) than in SRI (16±0.4 plants/m2 and 16 days). The lower the transplanting density, the higher the yield parameters and the yield. The economic profitability, determined based on the benefit/cost ratio, is higher in SRI (1.5) than in TP (1.2). The SRI required a lot of technicality in its implementation and generated more cost of production. However, SRI was more productive and economically more profitable than the traditional system.

The study was conducted to assess the cost and return from tilapia farming. Fifty homestead aquaculture ponds practicing monoculture and polyculture of tilapia (25 farmers from each category) were selected for this study. Data had been collected through face to face interview by using a structured questionnaire during April to September 2015 from the selected farmers of Dinajpur districts. The results from the survey revealed that both the tilapia monoculture and polyculture farming were profitable. However, the average total cost per hectare per production period was found higher (Tk. 332,712.08) in tilapia monoculture than tilapia culture with carps (Tk. 241,722.34). Moreover, the net margin was also found higher in tilapia monoculture with benefit cost ratio 1.51. Whereas, the benefit cost ratio in polyculture farming was 1.34. J. Bangladesh Agril. Energy is a very key component in every sphere of our life, be it a crop production or any other field. Again seasonality is a very common phenomenon in crop production and due to this there exist slacks and peak season of various sources of energy use and production. Present study was conducted in Golaghat district of Assam to highlight the month-wise energy use and also to know the energy output-input and benefit-cost ratio. Sampling method used for the study was Three Stage Sampling method. Result from the study revealed that the cropping intensity of the study area was 119.57 per cent. The most dominant energy consuming months were July, August, November, and December using 30.64, 18.90, 13.12 and 7.65 per cent of the total energy used in crop production in per hectare of gross cropped area. The energy output-input and benefit –cost ratio of the study area were 10.84 and 1.64 respectively. From the study it was found that there is vast scope to boost the production, productivity and profitability of crop production in study area by providing all the necessary infrastructures in due space and time in adequate amount and proper quality.

Garden pea is one of the economically and nutritionally most important winter vegetable crops in Nepal. Garden pea production is an emerging farm enterprise of Nepalese farmers of Eastern hill and mountain. The study was conducted to determine profitability, to investigate whether factors of production are being used in economic way, and to find out extension strategies for increasing income of farmers in Dhankuta district of Eastern Nepal. A total of 120 garden pea producing farmers, (60 from Chhathar-Jorpati Rural Municipality and 60 from Mahalaxmi Municipality of Dhankuta), were randomly selected and interviewed using semistructured interview schedule. Descriptive statistics and Cobb-Douglas production function were used to analyze the collected data. The benefit cost ratio (3.54) indicates that the garden pea production in study site was profitable with productivity of 6.59 Mt ha-1 per hectare. The production function revealed that cost on seed and labor have statistically significant effect on gross returns. In contrast, the effect of cost cost on plant nutrients and pesticides were not statistically significant. The sum of regression coefficients was 1.04 which indicates that production function exhibited an increasing return to scale. Thus, extension strategies should be primarily focused on introducing high yielding varieties, use of high quality seeds, providing trainings on improved farming practices, increasing value addition practices and strengthening market infrastructures. The study focuses on comparing technical efficiency and profitability between Boro rice farmers and maize farmers in Dinajpur district consisting of 150 randomly collected samples which are analyzed with statistical software STATA 12.0 version. Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) is used to accomplish the first objective where it is found that the maize farmers are efficient compared to boro-rice farmers. The deviation of the mean technical efficiency is estimated at 0.09. In addition maize farmers are also more profitable than boro-rice farmers estimated with a benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) of1.08 is for boro-rice and 1.26 is for maize production. The net profit for boro-rice is estimated as 10,527.60 Tk./ha whereas 28,966.40 Tk./ha for maize producers. However mean technical efficiency of boro-rice (0.44) and maize (0.53) cultivation clearly indicates that better utilization of resources will raise the efficiency and profitability for both crops production. A field trial on soil test based (STB) fertilizer doses was conducted during the year of 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 in Jashore region (AEZ-11) to find out the most suitable fertilizer doses for four crop based cropping pattern considering the agronomic feasibility and economic return of the system. The experiment consisted of eight different treatments viz. T1: 100% NPKSZnB (STB), T2: T1 + 25% N, T3: T1 + 25% NP, T4: T1 + 25% NK, T5:T1 + 25% PK, T6:T1 + 25% NPK, T7: 75% of T1, T8: Native fertility. Randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications was followed. Data revealed that seed yield of mustard was remarkably influenced by fertilizer treatments while grain yield of other components of the cropping system was not affected significantly by the treatments except control or native fertility. It was observed that 25% more NPK over 100% STB dose provided the highest yield of all the component crops. The highest rice equivalent yield (3.34 t ha-1) was recorded from T6 and the lowest (1.88 t ha-1) from T8 treatment. Maximum gross return (Tk. 420000/ha) and marginal benefit cost ratio (4.08) were also obtained from T6 treatment. An experiment was conducted in five farmers’ field in Dingaputa haor of Purba Tetulia village, Mohangonj Upazila in Netrakona district during the period from 20 July 2010 to 15 May 2011. The objective of the study was to determine the feasibility of growing short duration vegetable and oil crops in seasonal fallow of Boro rice-Fallow-Fallow cropping patterns in terms of both combined yields and economic performance. Six short duration vegetables such as potato, red amaranth, stem amaranth, spinach, radish and mustard were the first crops and Boro rice (var. BRRI dhan28) was the second crop. Thus there were six types of cropping patterns Potato-Boro rice- Seasonal flood, Red amaranth-Boro rice- Seasonal flood, Stem amaranth-Boro rice- Seasonal flood, Spinach-Boro rice- Seasonal flood, Radish-Boro rice- Seasonal flood and Musturd-Boro rice- Seasonal flood. The agronomic productivity (rice equivalent yield t ha-1) of the cropping patterns Potato-Boro rice- Seasonal flood, Red amaranth-Boro rice- Seasonal flood, Stem amarnth-Boro rice- Seasonal flood, Spinach-Boro rice- Seasonal flood, Radish-Boro rice- Seasonal flood and Mustard-Boro rice- Seasonal flood were 22.42, 15.47, 17.04, 17.79, 22.11 and 11.56 t ha-1, respectively with economic productivity (gross return Tk ha-1) of 364162.50, 251712.50, 276900.00, 292012.50, 359125.00 and 187850.00, respectively and the benefit cost ratio of 1.88, 1.52, 1.65, 1.69, 1.75 and 1.12, respectively From diversification practices in Dingaputa haor ecosystem Potato-Boro rice- Seasonal flood and Radish-Boro rice- Seasonal flood cropping patterns were found to be the most dominant cropping patterns in economic terms. The economic analysis of input energy in cassava production was considered in this study. Farms were surveyed to collect data on fuel, natural gas, fertilizer, pesticides and chemicals used on the farm for cassava production. The areas of study were Oyo, Ogun, Osun and Kwara States of Nigeria. The data for cost input resources in all the selected farms during cassava production from land preparation to transportation to market or house was obtained using structured questionnaire and oral interviews. Mathematical expressions were developed to evaluate cost analysis for each of the defined unit operations and the cost incurred were then determined. The total cost of production of one hectare of cassava was N82,055 and cost analysis revealed that profit of production of one hectare of cassava was N123,745. Benefit cost ratio was 2.50, which was greater than 1.0, indicating that cassava production is feasible from the economic stand point.
