This community service activity aims to train teachers to make learning media in the form of pictorial stories with children's literary content. This article is a case study of community service at the Nakula Gugus Teacher Working Group in Wonogiri, Central Java. Children's literature in this context is defined as a medium that is used as an intermediary to convey a form of character education for children. Apart from this, children's literature is considered an appropriate medium because it is able to attract students' interest through visual and narrative forms. Children's literature is also able to have more appeal if from the beginning it comes from ideas that are owned by the children themselves. This will stimulate a sense of ownership and logic to the things that the story structure wants to instill. The method used is lectures and discussions, then in the form of workshops on picture story books. The result of this community service is a picture book with a theme that is close to children related to the use of gadgets, which are then given the title Playing with Friends.

The challenges encountered in building the InternationalChildren’s Digital Library (ICDL), a freely availableonline library of children’s literature are described. Thesechallenges include selecting and processing books fromdifferent countries, handling and presenting multiplelanguages simultaneously, and addressing cultural differences. Unlike other digital libraries that present content from one or a few languages and cultures, and focuson either adult or child audiences, ICDL must serve amultilingual, multicultural, multigenerational audience.The research is presented as a case study for addressingthese design criteria; current solutions and plans forfuture work are described.

The capacity of the isolation room at the hospital appointed by the Government to treat Covid-19 patients is no longer able to accommodate the positive Covid-19 patients. Positive Covid-19 patients with no symptoms or other signs of worsening physical conditions are advised to do self-quarantine and isolation independently. This self-quarantine/isolation becomes a problem especially in densely populated settlements, especially informal settlements. The case study on this community service activity is an informal settlement located along the Surabaya railroad. Together with the Surabaya ARKOM team as partners, this community service activity conducting field observations with the results that there are still many poor house conditions in this area, the conditions of the houses are tight and not fulfilled the standards of a healthy house, which causes a larger potential spread of Covid-19 virus and makes it impossible to carry out self-isolation in their each homes. The solution offered is to create a communal isolation room module as an emergency isolation room for informal village communities during a pandemic or can be used in other certain emergency conditions with a participatory design method that meets health standards for isolation rooms designed with the easy and fast module applications process. The purpose of this activity is to provide a set of modules for communal quarantine units as prototypes that can be made by the community with a simple system, easily available materials, fast and prioritizing community participation in its assembling.   Abstrak: Kapasitas ruang isolasi di Rumah Sakit yang ditunjuk Pemerintah untuk merawat pasien Covid-19 sudah tak mampu menampung membeludaknya pasien positif Covid-19. Pasien positif Covid-19 yang belum mengalami atau bahkan yang tidak menunjukkan gejala penurunan kondisi fisik, dianjurkan untuk melakukan karantina dan perawatan secara mandiri. Karantina secara mandiri ini menjadi tantangan tersendiri untuk permukiman padat penduduk, terutama permukiman informal. Menjadi studi kasus pada kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah permukiman informal yang berada di tepi kereta api. Bersama tim ARKOM Surabaya sebagai mitra melakukan observasi lapangan dengan hasil menunjukkan bahwa kondisi rumah yang memprihatinkan masih banyak terdapat di area ini, kondisi rumah berdempetan dan tidak sesuai standar rumah sehat inilah yang menyebabkan potensi besar penularan Covid-19 dan tidak memungkinkan untuk melakukan isolasi mandiri di rumah masing-masing. Solusi yang ditawarkan adalah membuat modul ruang karantina komunal sebagai ruang karantina darurat bagi masyarakat kampung informal pada masa pandemi atau kondisi darurat tertentu dengan metode desain partisipatif yang memenuhi standar kesehatan untuk sebuah ruang karantina yang didesain dengan proses aplikasi modul yang mudah, murah dan cepat. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah memberikan modul unit karantina komunal sebagai prototype yang dapat dibuat sendiri oleh masing-masing kampung padat penduduk dengan sistem yang sederhana (portable), material mudah didapat, cepat dan mengedepankan usaha partisipatif masyarakat dalam pembuatannya.

The objective of this community service activity / PKM (Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat) is to provide knowledge to participants (parents and children) about the importance of character education from early age through the family. This program was motivated by problems that happens in society in Ngusikan, Jombang, East Java, children in that area addicted to play gadgets and have a tendency to anti-social behavior and lack of social courtesy. The method in this program used a dialogical collaborative-participatory approach includes in-house training (lectures, questions and answers, discussions) for the delivery of material, direct practice to make storytelling media, testing, practice of using fairy tale media and mentoring assisted by KKNT students. The number of participants in this program is approximately 40 participants, including students. This community service activity (PKM) was followed by women who have job as a housewife. The participants stated that this activity was very useful and was a new experience. This community service activity went well and was greeted with enthusiasm from the participants..

This chapter presents the results from a collective case study of 23 undergraduate preservice teachers enrolled in a Children's Literature course at a large Mid-Atlantic university. It explores how course instruction in and around high-quality, culturally diverse children's literature facilitated both displays of culturally competent dispositions and cultural knowledge of self and others. The chapter also describes how the preservice teachers under study applied their culturally competent dispositions as they rehearsed selecting texts, planning activities, and asking questions to their future students. The Cultural Competence for Teaching Framework provided a useful metric to evaluate participants' displays of cultural competence across the course of the semester. Within this chapter, the authors describe how they embedded cultural competence education inside the course including a description of the activities, texts, and pedagogy used.

Abstract Research indicates that children whose parents are incarcerated are a vulnerable group of people with poor life outcomes. Yet these children are not tracked in the Canadian system, making it difficult for schools to respond with appropriate supports. How can schools be inclusive to this hidden demographic of children? Framed in theories of Critical Literacy and Ethic of Care, the author proposes the use of story to develop understanding and empathy. Research shows that acknowledging these children’s experiences through story helps them to feel validated while broadening capacity for empathy among other children. Can a story develop empathy toward children of incarcerated parents? To answer this question, the author wrote a picture book about a child who visits her mother in jail, and read the story to three groups of children, interspersed and followed by rich discussions. The story elicited empathetic responses from all students, suggesting the benefits of this approach.

Books for children have existed for centuries. Their contents range from instructional manuals to flights of fancy. In children’s literature, a variety of narrative forms have emerged, developed, flowered, and faded, but one genre, Bible stories for children’s use, has remained in existence as long as print itself.
