Queueing Algorithm for Calculating Idling Emissions in FLINT—the FLorida INTersection Air Quality Model

The theoretical development of the queueing model used in the FLINT (FLorida INTersection) air quality model is described. FLINT is an area source model used to predict carbon monoxide concentrations for under-saturated and oversaturated traffic conditions at signalized intersections. In the FLINT model, deterministic queueing is used to estimate the queue length for cases of undersaturated conditions. In oversaturated cases, a cycle failure method has been developed to estimate queue length. In addition, a new concept is presented for calculating idling time for each vehicle’s position in the queue during both the red and the green phases of the traffic signal cycle. A limited set of undersaturated cases from monitoring data in Melrose Park, Illinois, was used to compare the predicted queue lengths with the measured queue lengths for several air quality models. It was found that FLINT predicted the queue length within one vehicle of the observed queue length. The same cases were tested using CAL3QHC, TEXIN2 intersection air quality models, and the American Automobile Manufacturers Association (AAMA) simulation model. It was found that predictions of the AAMA and the FLINT models were very close to the measured queue lengths in cases of undersaturated conditions. Moreover, although the FLINT and the AAMA models use a different approach to estimate queue length, their predicted queue lengths were very close in oversaturated cases. However, the predicted queue lengths of CAL3QHC were too long for oversaturated cases.

Abstract. The evaluation and intercomparison of air quality models is key to reducing model errors and uncertainty. The projects AQMEII3 and EURODELTA-Trends, in the framework of the Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollutants and the Task Force on Measurements and Modelling, respectively (both task forces under the UNECE Convention on the Long Range Transport of Air Pollution, LTRAP), have brought together various regional air quality models to analyze their performance in terms of air concentrations and wet deposition, as well as to address other specific objectives.This paper jointly examines the results from both project communities by intercomparing and evaluating the deposition estimates of reduced and oxidized nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) in Europe simulated by 14 air quality model systems for the year 2010. An accurate estimate of deposition is key to an accurate simulation of atmospheric concentrations. In addition, deposition fluxes are increasingly being used to estimate ecological impacts. It is therefore important to know by how much model results differ and how well they agree with observed values, at least when comparison with observations is possible, such as in the case of wet deposition.This study reveals a large variability between the wet deposition estimates of the models, with some performing acceptably (according to previously defined criteria) and others underestimating wet deposition rates. For dry deposition, there are also considerable differences between the model estimates. An ensemble of the models with the best performance for N wet deposition was made and used to explore the implications of N deposition in the conservation of protected European habitats. Exceedances of empirical critical loads were calculated for the most common habitats at a resolution of 100  ×  100 m2 within the Natura 2000 network, and the habitats with the largest areas showing exceedances are determined.Moreover, simulations with reduced emissions in selected source areas indicated a fairly linear relationship between reductions in emissions and changes in the deposition rates of N and S. An approximate 20 % reduction in N and S deposition in Europe is found when emissions at a global scale are reduced by the same amount. European emissions are by far the main contributor to deposition in Europe, whereas the reduction in deposition due to a decrease in emissions in North America is very small and confined to the western part of the domain. Reductions in European emissions led to substantial decreases in the protected habitat areas with critical load exceedances (halving the exceeded area for certain habitats), whereas no change was found, on average, when reducing North American emissions in terms of average values per habitat.

Abstract. A comprehensive parameterization was developed for the heterogeneous reaction probability (γ) of N2O5 as a function of temperature, relative humidity, particle composition, and phase state, for use in advanced air quality models. The reaction probabilities on aqueous NH4HSO4, (NH4)2SO4, and NH4NO3 were modeled statistically using data and uncertainty values compiled from seven different laboratory studies. A separate regression model was fit to laboratory data for dry NH4HSO4 and (NH4)2SO4 particles, yielding lower γ values than the corresponding aqueous parameterizations. The regression equations reproduced 79% of the laboratory data within a factor of two and 53% within a factor of 1.25. A fixed value was selected for γ on ice-containing particles based on a review of the literature. The combined parameterization was applied under atmospheric conditions representative of the eastern United States using 3-dimensional fields of temperature, relative humidity, sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium, obtained from a recent Community Multiscale Air Quality model simulation. The resulting spatial distributions of γ were contrasted with three other parameterizations that have been applied in air quality models in the past and with atmospheric observational determinations of γ. Our results highlight a critical need for more laboratory measurements of γ at low temperature and high relative humidity to improve model simulations of N2O5 hydrolysis during wintertime conditions.

Abstract. In this study, assumptions (ideality and thermodynamic equilibrium) commonly made in three-dimensional (3-D) air quality models were reconsidered to evaluate their impacts on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation over Europe. To investigate the effects of non-ideality, dynamic mass transfer and aerosol viscosity on the SOA formation, the Secondary Organic Aerosol Processor (SOAP) model was implemented in the 3-D air quality model Polyphemus. This study presents the first 3-D modeling simulation which describes the impact of aerosol viscosity on the SOA formation. The model uses either the equilibrium approach or the dynamic approach with a method specially designed for 3-D air quality models to efficiently solve particle-phase diffusion when particles are viscous. Sensitivity simulations using two organic aerosol models implemented in Polyphemus to represent mass transfer between gas and particle phases show that the computation of the absorbing aerosol mass strongly influences the SOA formation. In particular, taking into account the concentrations of inorganic aerosols and hydrophilic organic aerosols in the absorbing mass of the aqueous phase increases the average SOA concentration by 5 % and 6 %, respectively. However, inorganic aerosols influence the SOA formation not only because they constitute an absorbing mass for hydrophilic SOA, but also because they interact with organic compounds. Non-ideality (short-, medium- and long-range interactions) was found to influence SOA concentrations by about 30 %. Concerning the dynamic mass transfer for the SOA formation, if the viscosity of SOA is not taken into account and if ideality of aerosols is assumed, the dynamic approach is found to give generally similar results to the equilibrium approach (indicating that equilibrium is an efficient hypothesis for inviscid and ideal aerosols). However, when a non-ideal aerosol is assumed, taking into account the dynamic mass transfer leads to a decrease of concentrations of the hydrophilic compounds (compared to equilibrium). This decrease is due to differences in the values of activity coefficients, which are different between values computed for bulk aerosols and those for each size section. This result indicates the importance of non-ideality on the dynamic evolution of SOA. For viscous aerosols, assuming a highly viscous organic phase leads to an increase in SOA concentrations during daytime (by preventing the evaporation of the most volatile organic compounds). The partitioning of nonvolatile compounds is not affected by viscosity, but the aging of more volatile compounds (that leads to the formation of the less volatile compounds) slows down as the evaporation of those compounds is stopped due to the viscosity of the particle. These results imply that aerosol concentrations may deviate significantly from equilibrium as the gas–particle partitioning could be higher than predicted by equilibrium. Furthermore, although a compound evaporates in the simulation using the equilibrium approach, the same compound can condense in the simulation using the dynamic approach if the particles are viscous. The results of this study emphasize the need for 3-D air quality models to take into account the effect of non-ideality on SOA formation and the effect of aerosol viscosity for the more volatile fraction of semi-volatile organic compounds.

Abstract. The evaluation of regional air quality models is a challenging task, not only for the intrinsic complexity of the topic but also in view of the difficulties in finding sufficiently abundant, harmonized and time/space-well-distributed measurement data. This study, conducted in the framework of AQMEII (Air Quality Model Evaluation International Initiative), evaluates 4-D model predictions obtained from 15 modelling groups and relating to the air quality of the full year of 2006 over the North American and European continents. The modelled variables are ozone, CO, wind speed and direction, temperature, and relative humidity. Model evaluation is supported by the high quality in-flight measurements collected by instrumented commercial aircrafts in the context of the MOZAIC programme. The models are evaluated at five selected domains positioned around major airports, four in North America (Portland, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas) and one in Europe (Frankfurt). Due to the extraordinary scale of the exercise (number of models and variables, spatial and temporal extent), this study is primarily aimed at illustrating the potential for using MOZAIC data for regional-scale evaluation and the capabilities of models to simulate concentration and meteorological fields in the vertical rather than just at the ground. We apply various approaches, metrics, and methods to analyze this complex dataset. Results of the investigation indicate that, while the observed meteorological fields are modelled with some success, modelling CO in and above the boundary layer remains a challenge and modelling ozone also has room for significant improvement. We note, however, that the high sensitivity of models to height, season, location, and metric makes the results rather difficult to interpret and to generalize. With this work, though, we set the stage for future process-oriented and in-depth diagnostic analyses.

Under the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (APPCAP) implemented, China has witnessed an air quality change during the past five years, yet the main influence factors remain relatively unexplored. Taking the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) and Yangtze River Delta (YRD) regions as typical cluster cities, the Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) and Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extension (CAMx) were introduced to demonstrate the meteorological and emission contribution and PM2.5 flux distribution. The results showed that the PM2.5 concentration in BTH and YRD significantly declined with a descend ratio of −39.6% and −28.1%, respectively. For the meteorological contribution, those regions had a similar tendency with unfavorable conditions in 2013–2015 (contribution concentration 1.6–3.8 μg/m3 and 1.1–3.6 μg/m3) and favorable in 2016 (contribution concentration −1.5 μg/m3 and −0.2 μg/m3). Further, the absolute value of the net flux’s intensity was positively correlated with the degree of the favorable/unfavorable weather conditions. When it came to emission intensity, the total net inflow flux increased, and the outflow flux decreased significantly across the border with the emission increasing. In short: the aforementioned results confirmed the effectiveness of the regional joint emission control and provided scientific support for the proposed effective joint control measures.
