Taking advantage of crumb rubber from waste tires to modify bitumen is widely for the environmentally friendly and sustainable development of pavement. This study investigated the modification mechanism, rheological, and aging properties of styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS)/desulfurized crumb rubber (DCR) composite modified bitumen (SBS/DCRMB). Morphological features and chemical characteristics were assessed by fluorescence intensity measurement and gel permeation chromatography (GPC), respectively, and results demonstrated that the DCR and SBS modifier in SBS/DCRMB had been vulcanized and formed a three-dimensional network structure. Moreover, a comparison of the GPC elution curve showed the residual bitumen hardly changed due to carbon black released from DCR of SBS/DCRMB during the aging process of SBS/DCRMB, and the polymer molecules condensed to larger units. However, the remaining bitumen in SBSMB had changed evidently and the polymer degraded to smaller molecules. Meanwhile the rheological testing results, including multiple stress creep recovery, linear amplitude sweep and bending beam rheometer, declared that the SBS/DCRMB is superior to SBSMB before and after aging.

In this study, a new type of composite modified bitumen was developed by blending styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) and crumb rubber (CR) with a chemical method to satisfy the durability requirements of waterproofing material in the waterproofing layer of high-speed railway subgrade. A pressure-aging-vessel test for 20, 40 and 80 h were conducted to obtain bitumen samples in different long-term aging conditions. Multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) tests, linear amplitude scanning tests and bending beam rheometer tests were conducted on three kinds of asphalt binders (SBS modified asphalt, CR modified asphalt and SBS/CR composite modified asphalt) after different long-term aging processes, including high temperature permanent deformation performance, resistance to low temperature thermal and fatigue crack. Meanwhile, aging sensitivities were compared by different rheological indices. Results showed that SBS/CR composite modified asphalt possessed the best properties before and after aging. The elastic property of CR in SBS/CR composite modified asphalt improved the ability to resist low temperature thermal and fatigue cracks at a range of low and middle temperatures. Simultaneously, the copolymer network of SBS and CR significantly improved the elastic response of the asphalt SBS/CR modified asphalt at a range of high temperatures. Furthermore, all test results indicated that the SBS/CR modified asphalt possesses the outstanding ability to anti-aging. SBS/CR is an ideal kind of asphalt to satisfy the demand of 60 years of service life in the subgrade of high speed railway.

This paper presents a laboratory study of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS)/ crumb rubber modified asphalt by the two-step method. The conventional properties of the modified asphalt were determined. The effects of crumb rubber content and shearing time on the performance of the crumb rubber modified asphalt and composite modified asphalt. The results show that the crumb rubber contents and shearing time have significant impacts on the performance of the modified asphalt. With the crumb rubber content increasing, the high temperature performance was improved and the low temperature chanethe softening point increases and penetration decrease, and the ductility change little. It is comfortable for workability at the crumb rubber content of 20%. The viscosity is an important measurement for the workability of the modified asphalt. After adding the stabilizer, the viscosity increases until the shearing time reaching 1.5h, then it will decrease gradually.

In recent years, the use of nano materials for improving various mechanical and performance-related properties of polymer-modified asphalt binders has been growing rapidly. However, few researches investigated the effects of base binder and styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) structure on rutting resistance of polymer-nanocomposite-modified asphalt mixtures. This study investigated the effect of polymer–nanocomposite modification, using two different penetration grade asphalt binders and two types of SBS, on rutting properties of asphalt mixtures. Rheological properties of modified binders, Marshall stability, resilient modulus, and rut depth in wheel-tracking tests were used to evaluate the rutting performance of the modified binders and mixtures. The results indicated that both base binder type and SBS structure had significant effect on rutting resistance of polymer-nanocomposite-modified asphalt mixtures.

Fischer–Tropsch paraffin Sasobit® is a popular Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) modifier applied to improve physi­cal and rheological properties of bitumen. Although there are a number of studies investigating the effects of sasobit on bitumen properties, little has been carried out on evaluation of bitumen modified by sasobit along with other additives. In this study, sasobit modified bitumen is used as the base condition and four common modifiers namely anti-stripping agent, Crumb Rubber (CR), Styrene–Butadiene–Styrene (SBS) and Polyphosphoric Acid (PPA) are added separately to the FT – Wax modified bitumen to evaluate the compatibility of these additives with sasobit. Morphological, rheological and physical properties of modified binders are studied using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scan­ning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) alongside with conventional tests. Results show that although anti-stripping agent reduce bitumen viscosity and mixing/compac­tion temperatures of asphalt mixtures, it has significantly increased the stiffness of sasobit modified bitumen at low temperatures. Among all, sasobit and crumb rubber combination exhibited the best performance, especially at low and intermediate temperatures.

Composite modified asphalts with nano calcium carbonate (nano CaCO3)/ SBS and nano montmorillonite (nano MMT)/SBS were prepared respectively by melt blending. Rolling thin film oven test (RTFOT) was carried out to study the aging properties. The results demonstrate that CaCO3/SBS and MMT/SBS homogeneously disperse in the base asphalt, which lead to an improvement in terms of toughness, strength, and thermal stability. Effects of the nano CaCO3 and nano MMT on the properties of SBS modified asphalt appear as a decreasing penetration, an increasing softening point, and a decreasing ductility. The anti-aging property of the nano MMT/SBS modified asphalt was better than that of the CaCO3/SBS modified asphalt and SBS modified asphalt.

Styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer is one of the most preferred additives to improve performance in hot mix asphalt pavements. The storage instability, in other words, the separation of a polymer-rich phase from the bitumen-rich phase in the course of storage and transportation is one of the prevalent problems in SBS modified bitumen. The present study attempted to obtain modified bitumen at the same performance level with the SBS modified bitumen, but stable with respect to the storage stability. For this purpose, both SBS and American Gilsonite (AG) were used in modified bitumen production. It was determined that modified bitumen at the same performance level was obtained with the use of 5 % SBS or 18 % AG in bitumen modification. It was also determined that the performance levels of the modified bitumen obtained with the use of 2 % SBS + 13 % AG, 3 % SBS + 10 % AG and 4 % SBS + 6 % AG were similar. Additionally, 2 %, 3 % and 4 % SBS modified bitumen were used for the assessment of storage stability properties of the SBS modified binders. These 8 different modified bitumen samples were tested for storage stability based on the EN 13399 standard. Penetration, softening point, rotational viscometer, bending beam rheometer, and dynamic shear rheometer tests were conducted on the samples. Based on all conducted tests, it was determined that more stable binders were obtained with the use of AG and SBS in terms of storage stability compared to solely SBS modified bitumen.
