The article discusses the ideas of famous religious scholars, the founders of religious studies P. D Chantepie de la Saussaye and C. Tiele. Their work may serve as an illustration of the process of separation of religious studies from theology. Despite the fact that both Tiele and Saussaye were graduates of theological departments, they were one of the most radical advocates for the separation of religious studies from theology. Both Saussaye and Tiele advocated the creation of a new way of studying of religion based on the principles of comparative analysis and the idea of equality of religions. At the same time, their religious projects implicitly contain the legacy of the theological worldview - the anti-reductionism they postulate as the basis for understanding and studying religion. Chantepie de la Saussaye believed that the project of the studying religion should help to translate Christian ideas into the languages of other cultures and religions. Saussaye not only introduced the phrase “the phenomenology of religion” into the history of thought, but also outlined the main prospects for its future development: the isolation of religious phenomena, anti-reductionism, the question of the center of religion. Tiele stressed the importance of a comparative analysis of various religions, based on this method, he sought to reform and transform the old theological guidelines.

The main purpose of this article is to study the role of the Russian Museum in the formation of the historical consciousness of Russian society. In this context, the author examines the history of the creation of the Russian Museum of Emperor Alexander III and its pre-revolutionary collections that became the basis of this famous museum collection (in particular, the composition of the museum’s expositions for 1898 and 1915). Within the framework of the methodology proposed by the author, the works of art presented in the museum’s halls were selected and distributed according to the historical eras that they reflect, and a comparative analysis of changes in the composition of the expositions was also carried out. This approach made it possible to identify the most frequently encountered historical heroes, to consider the representation of their images in the museum’s expositions, and also to provide a systemic reconstruction of historical representations broadcast in its halls.

The article continues the series of investigations that demonstrate the experience of religious reading of the significant works of prominent Kyiv professors-academics of the last third of the 19th – early 20th century. These works have accumulated a powerful array of empirical material relevant to the history and theory of religious studies. Accordingly, the reconstruction of the field of theoretical positions important for the formation of the “science of religion” in the domestic intellectual tradition is currently being updated. The work of the Hebrew scholar and biblical scholar Yakym Olesnytsky is represented. This researcher was one of the first in the domestic humanities to analyze the “aggadic” layer of Talmudic writing through the prism of comparative-religious and religious-historical approaches. Metamorphoses of biblical images and plots, events of the ancient history of the Hebrew people, which arose under the influence of various mythological, philosophical, and folk traditions, were revealed. There was a real demythologization of “aggadah” from the standpoint of historical and literary criticism. On the basis of a religious reading of J. Olesnytsky’s text, this article traces some metamorphoses of theistic ideas in the process of the rise of Talmudic Judaism. They are analyzed from the point of view of the categories relevant to the philosophy and phenomenology of religion: Religious Experience, the Supernatural, the Another Reality as Sacred, the Absolute. A number of cognitive situations initiated by Olesnytsky, valuable from the point of view of a wider range of disciplines: philosophy and phenomenology of religion, history of religion, sociology and psychology of religion, religious comparative studies have been identified. This experience will be used in further research on the materials of the work of a well-known Kyiv academician.

In this article I consider the ways in which activists in the British suffrage movement became the public historians of their own pasts. I analyse the different forms in which the history of suffrage feminism was created and the ways in which it both drew upon former traditions of the labour movement and conventions of public memorialisation. I consider the ways in which the Australian suffrage campaign has been memorialised and differences between this and the British position. I raise a number of questions about ways in which public historians might explore the creation of collective histories and the role of individuals within that process arising from this initial comparative analysis.

In his book ‘From Seminary to University: An Institutional History of the Study of Religion in Canada’, Aaron Hughes offers a comprehensive portrait of the historical construction of the study of religion in Canada. While Hughes explains in-depth the social, political and historical conditions of production of knowledge on religion as an academic domain in provinces of Protestant heritage, his contribution is less thorough regarding the development of this academic field in the province of Quebec. In this article, I depict how the creation of institutions of knowledge in Quebec hinged around the Catholic hegemony that lasted since the inception of the colony, namely among faculties of theologies that framed main historical universities. I also argue that this heritage has shaped the ongoing construction of the study of religion as an epistemological issue between Catholic theologians and religious studies scholars.

«The Life of St. James of Palestine» (James of Carmel, James the Fasting) is one of the most famous monuments of Byzantine hagiographic literature. The article examines the history of the Syriac version of the Life. As a method, a comparative analysis of the discrepancies in the three oldest Syriac manuscripts of the Life, dated 688-875, is used on the basis of the data obtained, the author shows that the earliest manuscript can not be considered a protograph, which allows to shift the upper limit of the creation of the Syriac translation. This conclusion is also supported by external and internal evidence.

The article is devoted to religious syncretism, in particular, the history of its research in Western European and Russian science. Most foreign researchers give an ambiguous assessment of the mother concept of syncretism. However, when for Russian researchers syncretism is a universal term used to describe a group of processes and seems not to be problematic, in the Western European scientific community anthropologists and religious scholars have been actively discussing its application for almost fifty years: works devoted to religious syncretism, as a rule, are necessarily accompanied by a number of reservations, and in other cases researchers deliberately avoid it altogether, preferring to use synonymous concepts with a less complicated history. In this way the main objective this paper sets is to compare the visions of the Russian and the foreign academy on the term, map and draw the margins of the conceptual use that both Russian and European scholars share, shedding light on contexts and reasons. Positioning the concept within the field of its use, the text also notes the wide context of the referent phenomenon. Processes of spreading the boundaries of identity and religious self-determination are now taking place against the background of globalization. In this regard, the topic of religious syncretism not only has not lost its relevance, but, on the contrary, is increasingly at the center of religious studies. The author of the article covers the history of the emergence of the concept in religious studies. On the basis of comparative analysis, the traces of the coverage of this phenomenon in scientific publications of Western European and Russian researchers are shown. It is also revealed, how the connotations of the concept of religious syncretism have changed, with the key discrepancies and gaps in scientific approaches identified, and the main types of contexts in which it appears differentiated.

Modern financial technologies, in particular cryptocurrencies, penetrate deeper and deeper into the life of the modern world and the Russian society. The spread of cryptocurrencies in almost all areas is promoted by the following advantages: anonymity of payments, low commissions, and the inability to restrict the owners’ access to their funds. The use of cryptocurrencies is not limited to the banking and medical areas, insurance and services industries. Some experts suggest the creation of cryptocurrency as the single currency of the Eurasian Economic Union. Today this issue is only being discussed, but the advantages and a wide spread of cryptocurrencies prove that they can become one of the possible solutions in the currency agreement of the EEU being developed. To assess the prospects of using cryptocurrencies in the Eurasian Economic Union, it is necessary to analyze the prerequisites of cryptosystems, as well as to study the history of their development. The purpose of this article is to make a comparative analysis of cryptocurrencies on the EEU market in terms of possible use of the cryptocurrency as a supranational means of payment. The article considers the prerequisites of cryptocurrencies. Features of the currently most popular cryptocurrencies are analyzed. Possibilities of using them as EEU supranational payment means are estimated. Directions of the cryptocurrencies development on the EEU market are studied.
