In recent years, the optimal design of the workshop schedule has received much attention with the increased competition in the business environment. As a strategic issue, designing a workshop schedule affects other decisions in the production chain. The purpose of this thesis is to design a three-objective mathematical model, with the objectives of minimizing work completion time, work delay time and energy consumption, considering the importance of businesses attention to reduce energy consumption in recent years. The developed model has been solved using exact solution methods of Weighted Sum (WS) and Epsilon Constraint (Ɛ) in small dimensions using GAMS software. These problems were also solved in large-scale problems with NSGA-II and SFLA meta-heuristic algorithms using MATLAB software in single-objective and multi-objective mode due to the NP-Hard nature of this group of large and real dimensional problems. The standard BRdata set of problems were used to investigate the algorithms performance in solving these problems so that it is possible to compare the algorithms performance of this research with the results of the algorithms used by other researchers. The obtained results show the relatively appropriate performance of these algorithms in solving these problems and also the much better and more optimal performance of the NSGA-II algorithm compared to the performance of the SFLA algorithm.

AbstractSpeed is one of the most influential variables in both energy consumption and train scheduling problems. Increasing speed guarantees punctuality, thereby improving railroad capacity and railway stakeholders’ satisfaction and revenues. However, a rise in speed leads to more energy consumption, costs, and thus, more pollutant emissions. Therefore, determining an economic speed, which requires a trade-off between the user’s expectations and the capabilities of the railway system in providing tractive forces to overcome the running resistance due to rail route and moving conditions, is a critical challenge in railway studies. This paper proposes a new fuzzy multi-objective model, which, by integrating micro and macro levels and determining the economical speed for trains in block sections, can optimize train travel time and energy consumption. Implementing the proposed model in a real case with different scenarios for train scheduling reveals that this model can enhance the total travel time by 19% without changing the energy consumption ratio. The proposed model has little need for input from experts’ opinions to determine the rates and parameters.

Electricity is one of the most important resources for the growth and sustainability of the population. This paper assesses the energy consumption and user satisfaction of a simulated air conditioning system controlled with two different optimization algorithms. The algorithms are a genetic algorithm (GA), implemented from the state of the art, and a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA II) proposed in this paper; these algorithms control an air conditioning system considering user preferences. It is worth noting that we made several modifications to the objective function’s definition to make it more robust. The energy-saving optimization is essential to reduce CO2 emissions and economic costs; on the other hand, it is desirable for the user to feel comfortable, yet it will entail a higher energy consumption. Thus, we integrate user preferences with energy-saving on a single weighted function and a Pareto bi-objective problem to increase user satisfaction and decrease electrical energy consumption. To assess the experimentation, we constructed a simulator by training a backpropagation neural network with real data from a laboratory’s air conditioning system. According to the results, we conclude that NSGA II provides better results than the state of the art (GA) regarding user preferences and energy-saving.

Electrodialysis (ED) has been recently introduced in a variety of processes where the recovery of valuable resources is needed; thus, enabling sustainable production routes for a circular economy. However, new applications of ED require optimized operating modes ensuring low energy consumptions. The application of pulsed electric field (PEF) electrodialysis has been demonstrated to be an effective option to modulate concentration polarization and reduce energy consumption in ED systems, but the savings in energy are usually attained by extending the operating time. In the present work, we conduct a comprehensive simulation study about the effects of PEF signal parameters on the time and energy consumption associated with ED processes. Ion transport of NaCl solutions through homogeneous cation-exchange membranes is simulated using a 1-D model solved by a finite-difference method. Increasing the pulse frequency up to a threshold value is effective in reducing the specific energy consumption, with threshold frequencies increasing with the applied current density. Varying the duty cycle causes opposed effects in the time and energy usage needed for a given ED operation. More interestingly, a new mode of PEF functions with the application of low values of current during the relaxation phases has been investigated. This novel PEF strategy has been demonstrated to simultaneously improve the time and the specific energy consumption of ED processes.

Abstract Energy efficiency is an essential consideration in sustainable manufacturing. This study presents the car fender-based injection molding process optimization that aims to resolve the trade-off between energy consumption and product quality at the same time in which process parameters are optimized variables. The process is specially optimized by applying response surface methodology and using nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA II) in order to resolve multi-object optimization problems. To reduce computational cost and time in the problem-solving procedure, the combination of CAE-integration tools is employed. Based on the Pareto diagram, an appropriate solution is derived out to obtain optimal parameters. The optimization results show that the proposed approach can help effectively engineers in identifying optimal process parameters and achieving competitive advantages of energy consumption and product quality. In addition, the engineering analysis that can be employed to conduct holistic optimization of the injection molding process in order to increase energy efficiency and product quality was also mentioned in this paper.

In this study, we consider a scheduling problem with truncated exponential sum-of-logarithm-processing-times based and position-based learning effects on a single machine. We prove that the shortest processing time (SPT) rule is optimal for the makespan minimization problem, the sum of the θth power of job completion times minimization problem, and the total lateness minimization problem, respectively. For the total weighted completion time minimization problem, the discounted total weighted completion time minimization problem, the maximum lateness minimization problem, we present heuristic algorithms (the worst-case bound of these heuristic algorithms are also given) according to the corresponding single machine scheduling problems without learning considerations. It also shows that the problems of minimizing the total tardiness, the total weighted completion time and the discounted total weighted completion time are polynomially solvable under some agreeable conditions on the problem parameters.
