Forest and game: an evergreen of wildlife management (essay) The federal and cantonal laws on wildlife and forest, dating back 140 years, have made it possible for the massively weakened large fauna and the degraded forest to recover. Instead of two species of large fauna in the Graubünden, there are now twelve, and forest area has increased by 60%. However, this positive outcome should not obscure the fact that there are still many challenges to be resolved in wildlife management in our cultural landscape. These challenges include managing the considerable seasonal differences in the biotope capacity of wildlife habitats, determining the ecological role of ungulates in our cultural ecosystem as a whole, the increasing disturbance from leisure activities, and the need to take account of the influence of large predators in planning hunting. Conflicts between forest and game can only be resolved in a broader context.

While the main author’s work «Forms of Regionalization» remains unfinished, its pieces can easily be found in different minor papers. «Territorial areals and networks» is open for various researchers to develop different topics from it. «Rodoman-style» cartoids nowadays can easily be created and transformed by means of computer programs. The author’s conclusions on Russia’s cultural landscape are successfully confirmed and developed by V. Kagansky. The works by B. Rodoman in the field of recreation and tourism studies, on personality development during leisure activities, on travel psychology, on the role of fieldwork in young people’s education progress etс. could attract the attention of psychologists, sociologists, health scientists. B. Rodoman considers the terms highlighted through the paper in italics as a points of specific research growth: these concepts can serve as ideas for articles, term papers, theses, or dissertations. The author has compiled a draft dictionary «Basic terms of theoretical geography and rayonistics (zoning studies)».

Globally, the role of large predators is increasingly understood as essential for the restoration and maintenance of ecosystems. Consequently, predator conservation represents a paradigm shift in ecological thinking, yet the management of predators sets conflicting goals because of ongoing conflict with humans. This is exemplified on Fraser Island where dingoes come into conflict with tourists, and dingoes perceived to be dangerous are regularly culled. It is argued here that this new conservation paradigm premised on protecting predators in conjunction with conventional wildlife management can result in predator populations being held in a perpetual state of social disorder, exacerbating rather than alleviating conflict. We consider the intensity and frequency of lethal control and how this may impact upon predator social structures, healthy ecological function, stable breeding patterns and stable territoriality. The direct effects of management-induced psychological stress for the survivors of episodic culls are discussed, as well as the indirect flow-on effects of social dysfunction. A final consideration is the cyclical nature of lethal control, whereby conflict with humans results in culling which, in turn, gives rise to further social disruption and conflict. In part, our assessment is derived from official data collected in the course of the management of dingoes on Fraser Island. On this basis, and on the basis of the international literature available, we offer new insights, which may inform predator management more broadly.

Since  last century, silviculture in Greece has been based on the knowledge and  experience of the silviculturally developed countries, mainly those of  Central Europe. This knowledge was adapted to the Greek conditions with  satisfactory results. The Laboratory of Silviculture which belongs to the  Department of Forestry and Natural Environment pays attention to the existing  silvicultural problems of Greece and other countries and records them. With  proper evaluation of these problems in the framework of the present education  programme, our Laboratory tries to educate the students of the Department and  consult the Forest Engineers. Special attention is paid to the following  subjects:     - The multiple role of natural forest (with priority to their ecological  role).     - The rehabilitation of the degraded forest ecosystems (avoidance of the  danger of desertification).    - The landscape exology according to the contemporary needs.    - The protection of the forests and their regeneration mainly after  destruction.    - The systematic cultivation of forests and especially of plantations,  aiming mainly to safeguard their resistance against various dangers.

Ecological and economical evaluation of artificial forest plantations of the foothills of Karachay-Cherkess Republic is carried out in the work. Forest cultures of Kuban forest area were studied; the forest area includes seven local forest districts. Our research was conducted in the territory of three local forest districts: Prigorodnoe, Kholodno – Rodnikovskoe, Dzhegutinskoe. Cultures are located in identical conditions; places of growth are clear and mixed in structure. When studying cultures both raw material and ecological role of artificial plantings were considered. Calculations were begun from determination of stock of non-timber forest products (wood greens, foliage, and tanner’s bark).
