The authors investigated periodic potential changes measured on oriented sections of Al single crystals during spontaneous dissolution in dilute aqueous solutions of KOH, with the aim to find optimum conditions for the formation of potential oscillations. It was found that this phenomenon is related with the kinetics of the reaction investigated, whose rate also changed periodically. The mechanism of the oscillations is discussed in view of the experimental findings.

Cobalt(II) and zinc(II) complexes of ethyl carbazate (ECZ), [Co(ECZ)3](NO3)2 and [Zn(ECZ)3] (NO3)2, were synthesized. Single crystals of these two compounds were grown from aqueous solutions using a slow evaporation method. Their structures have been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Both of them are monoclinic with space group P21/n. The complexes are further characterized by element analysis and IR measurements. Their thermal stabilities are studied by using TG-DTG, DSC techniques. When heated to 350 °C, only metal oxide was left for both complexes.

Highly transparent and well faceted large size epsomite single crystals have been grown in pure form and doped with KCl from aqueous solutions by slow cooling and isothermal evaporation method. The optical quality of the epsomite improves on doping by KCl. Mass growth rates were found to increase with doping of lower concentrations of KCl and then decreases with the higher concentration of KCl. KCl doped epsomite crystal reveals that structures are slightly distorted due to adsorption of Cl- ion into the crystal lattice. DC conductivity along the growth axis for all of the grown crystals increases with temperature in the range of 25 to 70ºC and also increases with the KCl concentration. Dielectric constant is found to be almost independent of frequency up to range of 106Hz. The dielectric studies show the suitability of these grown crystals for optoelectronic applications. AbstractSingle crystals of two novel uranyl sulfates and two novel uranyl selenates with protonated cyclen and 3-aminotropane molecules, ((C8H24N4)[(UO2)3(SO4)5](H2O)3(I), (C8H24N4)(H5O2)(H3O)[(UO2)4(SeO4)7(H2O)](H2O)6.6(II), (C8H18N2)(H5O2)(H3O)[(UO2)3(SO4)5(H2O)](H2O)0.5(III), and (C8H18N2)(H5O2)(H3O)[(UO2)3(SeO4)5(H2O)](H2O)2(IV) have been prepared by isothermal evaporation from aqueous solutions and structurally characterized. Uranyl-containing 2D units have been investigated using topological approach and information-based complexity measures demonstrating that complex topologies form more rare than their simplest counterparts, which is a response of the crystal structure to changes of chemical conditions within the system.

Single crystals of [Cd(pyrazine)Cl2],[Zn(pyrazine)Cl2] and [Zn(pyrimidine)Cl2] were obtained by a diffusion technique from aqueous solutions of the metal dichlorides and solutions of the respective diazine. The structures consist of “supramolecular” networks of-M-Cl-M - and -M-diazine-M-chains.

The quantity metachor introduced in the preceding paper was evaluated from the experimental data on surface tension of the aqueous solutions for a set of polyvalent and weak electrolytes. The almost complete concentration independence of the metachor and its direct proportionality to the number of the free charges in a dissociated molecule (observed and theoretically substantiated in the above cited paper for strong 1,1-, 1,2- and 2,1-valent electrolytes) has been verified in the present paper also for electrolytes of the higher valency types. The metachor values of fully dissociated 1,1-, 1,2-, 1,3- and 1,4-valent electrolytes follow a ratio (5 ± 1) : (10 ± 1.5) : 15 : 22 cm3 mol-1. Association of the electrolytes decreases correspondingly the metachor value as one can see on the case of electrolytes with bulky ions (NH4SCN, KCH3COO, Na2S2O3, hexacyanoferrates(II) or with the free acids H2SO4, H2CrO4, H3PO4 etc. A weak, in the investigated concentration range neglibility dissociated oxalic acid, consisting of small hydrated hydrophilic molecules, exhibits metachor values close to zero. Dibasic organic acids with a larger number of hydrophobic CH2 groups reach very high negative metachor values, however, their salts again possess metachor values close to 10 cm3 mol-1 - in accordance with the values found for strong 1,2-valent electrolytes. The metachors of ZnCl2 and CdCl2 decrease sharply from the last mentioned value, with increasing concentration while the metachor value of zinc perchlorate remains unchanged at the level corresponding to the fully dissociated salt. This is in agreement with the well known sequence of tendency of the d10-cations to form complexes with the Cl- and ClO-4 anions. All these facts have verified that the metachor can be, in principle, applied for a diagnostic states of the electrolytes in aqueous solutions.
