The purpose of the article is to establish the contribution of Ukrainian avant-garde artist, pedagogue, theorist Kazymyr Severynovych Malevych to the Ukrainian and world pictorial art. The methodology consists of a range of methods: historical, biographical, theoretical. The abovementioned methodological approach allows studying the question of historical data relating to the events in Ukraine that led to the emigration waves, finding out certain biographical facts and analyzing the artist’s creative activity. The scientific novelty of the research is in establishing Kazymyr Malevych’s contribution to the development of the Ukrainian and world pictorial art. We have studied the special features of his art, theoretical works and teaching activity, as these were an important factor in preserving and popularizing the Ukrainian culture. Conclusions. Malevych’s life and art have become the valuable heritage of the whole world. He influenced the development of visual arts with his activity and personally created direction in abstractionism. Guided by his own research and artistic search, he established a new direction in avant-garde art – suprematism, which became a unique phenomenon for fine art. His style was a major influence for visual arts, architecture and design. Malevych elaborated his own manner of teaching art to students. He was followed by Ukrainian and German constructivists, American minimalists and French abstractionists. His creative ideas are still relevant to this day.

The work of Ukrainian artists who have contributed to Ukrainian and international art, is not sufficiently disclosed. Their creative search impresses with versatility, interesting decision, continues to impress and inspire contemporaries. Purpose of the article — to find out the contribution of the Ukrainian avant-garde artist, set designer, teacher Oleksandra Ekster, to the Ukrainian and international fine arts. Oleksandra Ekster’s work has been the subject of research for decades. Scientists are interested in the painter’s art search, her contribution to Ukrainian avant-garde, scenography reforms, and teaching activity. Some sources may state that Ekster is a representative of Russian avant-garde. However, the artist grew up in Kyiv, obtained art education and promoted with her work not only Ukrainian but world avant-garde as well. The research of modern scientists (H. Kovalenko, D. Horbachova, T. Filevska, N. Stoliarchuk, M. Yur and others) makes it possible to review the artist’s life and artistic journey as well as her contribution to art history. The research methodology consists of a range of methods: historical, biographical, theoretical. The abovementioned methodological approach allows studying the question of historical data relating to the events in Ukraine that led to the emigration waves, finding out certain biographical facts and analyzing the artist’s creative activity.

The article tells about the art of gravure, which is a part of the art of graphic, as well as about artists who have devoted themselves to the study of this type of art and the study of aspects of this area of fine art, as well as the study of art in the works of these artists. For a deeper understanding of graphic arts, visual material is needed. Gravure in the field of graphics occupies one of the main positions in the visual arts. With the help of this simple black-and-white graphic, artists achieve mastery by depicting and expressing what they saw in life in their works, and in doing so they develop fine arts. The article also says that gravure has specific features as one of the types of production activity, a unique way of creative activity.

This essay reconsiders Reyner Banham's classic study of early twentieth-century architecture and design, Theory and Design in the First Machine Age, originally published in 1960. Banham surveyed the architecture, design, and visual arts of the ‘first machine age’, characterized by industrial production and motorized transportation, from a self-consciously thematized perspective within the ‘second machine age’, populated by expendable consumer technologies and images. This revisionist perspective enabled Banham to challenge long-standing myths propagated by the dominant figures of the modern movement. In his polemical emphasis on the contingency and plurality of that which had empirically transpired in first machine age, Banham rejected the reduction of the messy history of the modern movement to the victory of a putative ‘international style’. Banham reasserted the intimate connection of architectural modernism with the avant-garde artistic movements of the 1910s and 20s, emphasizing particularly the most radical ones such as expressionism, futurism, and dadaism.

The research project Digital Archive of Belgian Neo-Avant-garde Periodicals (DABNAP) aims to digitize and analyse a large number of artists’ periodicals from the period 1950–1990. The artistic renewal in Belgium since the 1950s, sustained by small groups of artists (such as G58 or De Nevelvlek), led to a first generation of post-war artist periodicals. Such titles proved decisive for the formation of the Belgian neo-avant-garde in literature and the visual arts. During the sixties and the seventies, happening and socially-engaged art took over and gave a new orientation to artist periodicals. In this article, I wish to highlight the challenges and difficulties of this project, for example, in dealing with non-standard formats, types of paper, typography, and non-paper inserts. A fully searchable archive of neo-avant-garde periodicals allows researchers to analyse in much more detail than before how influences from foreign literature and arts took root in the Belgian context.

The author of the article considers the industrial theme as one of the important themes in the genre of house-hold paintings in the visual arts of Dagestan. The analyzed works reveal the peculiarities and diversity in the development of the theme during its formation, and in the post-war period. The scientific turnover includes previously unexplored works, which are of particular interest for a more complete study of genre (household) paintings in Dagestan fine art.

AbstractIn the present paper, the author looks at the political dimension of some trends in the visual arts within twentieth-century avant-garde groups (cubism, expressionism, fauvism, Dada, abstractionism, surrealism) through George Santayana’s idea of vital liberty. Santayana accused the avant-gardists of social and political escapism, and of becoming unintentionally involved in secondary issues. In his view, the emphasis they placed on the medium (or diverse media) and on treating it as an aim in itself, not, as it should be, as a transmitter through which a stimulating relationship with the environment can be had, was accompanied by a focus on fragments of life and on parts of existence, and, on the other hand, by a de facto rejection of ontology and cosmology as being crucial to understanding life and the place of human beings in the universe. The avant-gardists became involved in political life by responding excessively to the events of the time, instead of to the everlasting problems that are the human lot.

This paper aims to explore various perspectives of the Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) as they relate to the automotive and electronic industries in Brazil based on the historical data from 2010 to 2016. The methodological approach was based on the Supply Chain Vulnerability Map (SCVM). The SCVM was tested in its totaliness and two more riskswere added to the hazard vulnerability category to form the SCVM II. The exploratory surveys were used to better understand the impacts on the automotive and electronic industries in Brazil during the study period. An interesting finding was that most of the major automotive and electronic industries are concerned with integrating risk management, governance and compliance in the supply chain. The findings of the empiricalinvestigation and SCRM historical data indicate that managers must integrate risk management, governance and compliance in the supply chain and use the proposed SCVM II. This research revealed the risks that surrounded the supply chain during the time period covered. In the study, the researchers added two more risks to the hazard vulnerability category: item 10, deficient rainfall (as seen in Manaus and São Paulo) and number 13, viral epidemics (to reflect the Zika virus around Brazil), it was named as SCVMII. Among the limitations of the research was that the study applied real data which might vary drastically due to economic downturn of the country. This might affect the performance of the investigated industries.

This chapter is entirely dedicated to a pioneering little magazine that elaborated on the example of The Germ and the Oxford and Cambridge Magazine (see Chapter 1), the Century Guild Hobby Horse (1884/86–92), which started as the periodical organ of the early Arts & Crafts organisation the Century Guild. To this magazine, the production and design of the material text was as much an opportunity for experiments as its actual contents, a notable aesthetic innovation that was motivated by a notion of artistic artisanship, and that made it a milestone in Victorian print culture. Each issue of the magazine—in which Victorian sages such as Matthew Arnold and John Ruskin made guest appearances— commands for the applied art workers producing it the respect usually reserved for authors and artists working within the category of ‘Fine Art’. So doing, the magazine helped to create a wider appreciation for Fine Printing. After the discontinuation of the Century Guild in 1893, this periodical was temporarily revived by the enterprising publishers at the Bodley Head to boost that firm’s Print-Revivalist credentials. The Hobby Horse is thereby also an early example of how supposedly avant-garde principles are sometimes difficult to distinguish from commercial strategies.

After describing one of Peter Greenaway's recent efforts to move beyond the limits of the cinema, Evans proposes that Douglas Sirk had already begun to dissolve the boundaries the medium by assimilating elements of avant-garde art, architecture and design into his mise-en-scène. She goes on to assert that Sirk's importation of a high art aesthetic into the low genre of melodrama echoed the widespread European Modernist preoccupation with the creation of a synergistic Gesamtkunstwerk or "total art work" during the period in which he intellectually came of age. Finally, the director's tendency to create "pictures" of the external landscape that the characters (and the viewer) are obliged to contemplate through the window frame is interpreted in the light of the theories of Le Corbusier.
