The subject of this essay is to verify empirically whether, and under which conditions, the work-family relationship -- as it is actually experienced in everyday life - can be considered "good" and turn the family into a resource for itself and society. This goal first requires framing such relationship within the identity process at a personal, couple, intergenerational and social level. Any form of reconciliation involves primarily a reflexive and dialogic process of the person and the couple: if decisions are shared within the family and connected with the possibility of relating to other subjects (primary and secondary networks), the family can be a source of wellbeing for its own members and for society.

Abstract Balancing work and family roles proves to be a rather difficult task for most individuals. The social cognitive career theory (Lent, Brown, and Hackett 1994) states that to reach positive outcomes in the work domain, people need to develop self-efficacy through adequate learning experiences. With this study, we tested the importance of two contexts that can provide valuable learning experiences: family and volunteering. Thus, we verified the relationship between the division of labour in the family of origin, respectively, authentic leadership use in the volunteering organization and anticipated work-family and family-work conflict in a sample of student volunteers. Self-efficacy in dealing with the conflict between the two domains was used as a mediator. One hundred and ten students who were also volunteers at the time of the study participated in this research. A series of mediation models showed significant indirect effects from family and volunteering experiences on the conflict between work and family. Spillover effects were also confirmed. This study provides an understanding of how positive contexts such as equitable division of labour in the family and having an authentic leader in the volunteering organization help students develop their self-efficacy, which also contributes to anticipating lower levels of conflict between the work and family domains.

This chapter reviews the literature on the family and personal demands of single workers without dependent children. Also discussed are findings from an interview study examining how singles without dependent children manage work and nonwork. Results of both the literature review and interviews suggest that singles without dependent children have a variety of family, relationship, and personal demands, which often compete with work, leading to interrole conflict. Moreover, most interview participants indicated that their role as family member is highly valued, and of greater importance than their work role. Taken together, findings refute the view of many work–family researchers that singles without dependent children “have no family” and argue for their inclusion in studies of the work–family interface.

The article explores the scope and impact of employees’ work responsibilities on the family life and vice-versa. It describes the coping styles adopted by a sample of urban employees and the efficacies of these styles. A semi-structured questionnaire and in-depth interviews were the means of collecting data from 48 respondents who were either dual career couples or single parents. The findings reveal that virtually all the respondents experience serious work-family conflicts, especially with managing their time, domestic chores, and stress. The challenge is for the employer, the employee, trade unions and partners to support each other to alleviate work-family conflicts. The findings are important given the focus of South African government on emancipating and empowering women through legislation and the setting up of national women. The contributions of women would be undermined, if family-work conflicts such as identified here were not addressed.

A selection of letters of captain F. S. Leontiev was first introduced into scientific circulation. The epistolary legacy of many combatants has not yet become the subject of independent analysis, although the letters from the front contain a lot of factual material about military everyday life, the mood in the army environment, and front-line everyday life. Frontline letters with a certain subjectivity in the coverage of events can become the basis for deep and detailed research on military anthropology.

This article examines the ramifications of the recent amendment to the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 (Act 164) in protecting the wellbeing of the family relationship involving interfaith marriage and other legal issues governing non-Muslim families. The amendment witnessed substantial reforms to section 51 of Act 164 pertaining to the divorce on the ground of conversion, increasing the age limit for child maintenance and adopting more flexible principles in dividing matrimonial assets. However, the focus will be on the impact of the amendment to section 51 of Act 164 due to its significant in changing the landscape of legal arguments pertaining to jurisdiction of the court in dealing with the subject matter in dispute, ranging from the divorce and other intense arguments pertaining to maintenance of wife, child custody and religious status of children. The study adopts qualitative study in elucidating relevant documents that comprised of statutory laws, articles in legal journals and decided cases where arguments leading to the need for the reform of those affected issues were well addressed. Certain aspects of Islamic jurisprudence will be referred to and analysed in searching for authoritative and practical legal arguments within the existing legal framework. Harmonisation of law is adopted whenever applicable when dealing with the resolution of conflict of laws. It is hoped that this study will provide constructive argument and invaluable source of reference for the Malaysian civil court in disposing of interfaith family disputes when the law is fully enforced.

Objective: The relationship between work-family balance and employee performance is a topic of great interest for organisations and, therefore, for academic research. In this context, this paper reviews the literature to identify the determining factors in company-based adoption of work-life balance measures (causes related to work-family conflict: WFC, and family-work conflict: FWC) on the one hand and, on the other, the research that has focussed on studying the effect on business results of practices to achieve a work-life balance. Methodology: We have undertaken analysis of the academic research published over the period 1998-2018 and available on the Web of Science (WOS), SCOPUS and EBSCO databases. Results: The review undertaken indicates that conflict can be originated in the family, in the workplace and in other environments throughout the day when we face up to the obligations arising from the roles we play in the family and at work and that affect us in both directions. In turn, work-life balance measures appear to have a positive effect, not only at the individual level for also for staff and companies as a whole. Limitations: Descriptive research. Practical implications: This study aims to contribute to the literature by providing updated information on the state of the art on this subject, and to highlight possible future lines of empirical research, as well as the relevance of the subject at a company level.

English

The purpose of this study was to explore fathers’ perceptions about their role in the family, and the characteristics of their involvement in their children’s lives in the Colombian context. The sample consisted of 12 Colombian fathers. The study used a qualitative methodology, one-hour in depth interviews were conducted with the participants. Results indicated important changes in the role of fathers and mothers in Colombian families. Fathers’ perceptions departed to some extent from the traditional pattern attributed to nuclear families, where men are considered as the only economic provider and authority figure in the family. This departure places fathers in a category we would call “in transition”, which includes perceptions of more equitable parental roles within the family and a combination of features from other typologies of fatherhood proposed in the literature. Fathers also reported a desire to participate more at home and to be more involved in their children’s lives; they also emphasized the importance of expressing love and affection to their children. Work-family conflict and the impact of the quality of the father-child relationship emerged as important categories in the fathers’ perceptions of their role and involvement in the family. In Colombia research on fathers is scarce and family policies mainly focus on mothers as the principal caregiver. A better understanding of fathers’ roles and involvement in the family and with children will contribute to the development of programs and policies oriented toward all family members and family relationship systems.
