Digitization and Blockchain in Finance, The Netherlands in 2020 and 2021

The exploratory research in 2020 received a lot of attention in trade journals in the Netherlands and in the international context of academic journals, webinars and conferences. This led to this research in 2021, including a reorientation on the structure of the research. Due to the further development of the faculty in 2020 and 2021, the questions from the research were further professionalized, peer reviewed by experts and supplemented. In addition, it is interesting and scientifically important to place the research more in both a national and international perspective, both with regard to professional groups and with regard to other studies, such as that of Controllers Magazine, After various inventorying discussions at the end of 2020, whether or not at the request of the stakeholders, this led to a reorientation on the conducting of the research. At the beginning of 2021, the study was therefore extended almost simultaneously to: (a) all members of the Working field commission (Werkveldcommissie; WVC) of the Accountancy (AC), Finance, Tax and Advice (FTA, formerly Fiscal Law and Economics) and Finance & Control (FC) programmes of the Academy of Finance, Economics and Management (FEM) at Saxion University of Applied Sciences, (b) all members of the foundation of collaborating chartered accountants and accounting and bookkeeping firms (SRA), a network organization of 375 independent audit firms with 900 branches in the Netherlands, and (c) international sister universities of Saxion University of Applied Sciences.

This paper investigates the importance of transparency of internationalization and various obstacles and barriers that influence international short student mobility within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) in particular in the Netherlands and in Russia. Having in mind that due to privacy regulations and availability of data regarding international short student mobility, this article is using a framework based on literature review. The authors analyze patterns in international short student mobility, both between countries andover time, notonly by using various literature analyses but as well as interviews and panel discussions atHAN University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands and Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, Russia, to give this research an qualitative dimensionand underline how internationalization and what various factors are relevant to international short student mobility. This article presents an important contribution to this growing field of literatureby doing a comparative analysis about the factors which positively improve the international short students mobility. The three folded impact ofthis paper is obvious for the stakeholders involved: students, institutions and policy makers are responsible for the smooth cooperation and coordination for a better international mobility.

The chapter presents a comparative analysis of the implementation of multilingual/bilingual education in Kazakhstan and the Netherlands. The study explores the origin and role of multilingualism, for socio-economic development, relevant regional and international practices in multilingual education, the growth of trilingual instruction, English language training and the use of digital technologies (distant, e-learning programs) in the Eurasian region, Major common features and differences of implementing multilingual/bilingual teaching between the two case studies and the main findings from research trips are identified. A theoretical analysis of scholarly approaches, as well as practical and methodological implications, are made on the example of implementing multilingual instruction at the Kazakhstani agricultural higher educational institutions, particularly Kazakh National Agrarian University and Kazakh S. Seifullin Agritechnical University and Dutch counterparts - Wageningen University, and the Hague University of Applied Sciences.

This paper briefly contextualizes the internationalization of universities, its main concepts, historical aspects, motivations and realities emphasizing the Brazilian and Dutch contexts. It describes the institutional cooperation between the Methodist University of Sao Paulo (UMESP) – Brazil and the Zuyd University of Applied Sciences (ZUYD), in the Netherlands.  Focus is placed on the exchange of students for the semester mobility program.  It makes a narrative since the beginning of the partnership, describing its objectives, the way it evolved and the outcome during the period. Special attention is given to the successes and challenges to operate the program. Student evaluations were analyzed to determine future improvements for the exchange.

Purpose Daily commuting trips of higher education (HE) students account for a large proportion of the carbon footprint of a HE institution. Considerations of students underlying their choice of travel mode and their decision to make the trip to campus or to study online are explored as a necessary first step for finding an optimal balance between online and on-campus learning from both a sustainability and an educational perspective. Design/methodology/approach Focus group conversations were held with student groups from different study programmes of a university of applied sciences in the Netherlands. Findings Dutch students’ travel mode choices seem to depend on measures regulating travel demand such as a free public transport card and high parking costs. The findings indicate that students make reasoned choices about making a trip to campus. These choices depend on considerations about their schedule, type, lecturer and content of a course, social norms and their own perceived behavioural control. Alternative online options can provide students with more flexibility to make choices adapted to their needs. Social implications While these findings are useful for sustainable and educational reasons, they also seem helpful in times of COVID-19 which calls for a re-design of curricula to allow for blended forms of online and on-campus learning. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is one of the first studies looking at students’ considerations when deciding whether to travel to campus to learn or stay at home learning online.

Instant messaging (IM) is the term used to describe the technology through which ‘users can set up a list of partners who will be able to receive notes that pop up on their screens the moment one of them writes and hits the send button’. While early use could be described as mainly for fun, IM today is a serious communication medium. Remarkably, it seems that educational institutions have been doing very little with it, while several studies indicate that it could indeed be a valuable tool in education. As a first step towards a better understanding of the educational use of IM, we want to gain insights in how students currently use IM and what opportunities they themselves see for the medium. To that end we conducted a survey among students of the Fontys University of Applied Sciences in The Netherlands. A large majority of the participating students indicated using IM for their studies.
