At the present stage, the problem of socio-economic differentiation of the country's population is becoming quite significant, which is even more aggravated in the context of macroeconomic instability. The crisis and tension in relations with Western countries have a negative impact on the social structure of the population through a negative impact on the country's economy, exacerbating the processes of differentiation, while sustainable development presupposes the achievement of the general welfare of citizens. The main purpose of the article is to study the level of well-being of the population and its differentiation. This goal setting dictates the need to develop not only theoretical approaches to understanding the categories of «welfare» and «socio-economic differentiation of the population», but also in practice - to understand the current situation at the present stage. The study used the comparative method (for comparing macroeconomic indicators), analytical, method of economic and statistical analysis (use of statistical data) and some others. The main result of the study is the substantiation of theoretical approaches to changes in the level of well-being of the population, taking place against the background of large-scale processes of globalization and the existing instability of economic relations both within the country and between states, which leads to imbalances in society and aggravated differentiation of the population by income, which can cause social tension in Russia. The socio-economic development of the country is, first of all, a factor influencing the standard of living of Russians. Through negative crisis moments, the stratification of society occurs, which leads to a decrease in the quality of life. An analysis of the level of well-being of the population is necessary in parallel with the study of indicators reflecting this level, in order to be able to track the depth of the process of differentiation of the population in relation to income.

Water sensitive urban developments are designed with integrated urban water management concepts and water sensitive urban design measures. The initiatives that may be included are the substitution of imported drinking water with alternative sources using a fit-for-purpose approach and structural and non-structural measures for the source control of stormwater. A water sensitive approach to urban development can help in achieving sustainability objectives by minimising disturbance to ecological and hydrological processes, and also relieve stress on conventional water systems. Water sensitive urban developments remain novel in comparison with conventional approaches, so the understanding and knowledge of the systems in regards to their planning; design; implementation; operation and maintenance; health impacts and environmental impacts is still developing and thus the mainstream uptake of these approaches faces many challenges. A study has been conducted to understand these challenges through a detailed literature review, investigating a large number of local greenfield and infill developments, and conducting extensive consultation with water professionals. This research has identified the social, economic, political, institutional and technological challenges faced in implementing water sensitive urban design in greenfield and infill developments. The research found in particular that there is the need for long-term monitoring studies of water sensitive urban developments. This monitoring is important to validate the performance of novel approaches implemented and improve associated guidelines, standards, and regulatory and governance frameworks, which can lead to mainstream acceptance of water sensitive urban development approaches. The dissemination of this research will help generate awareness among water professionals, water utilities, developers, planners and regulators of the research challenges to be addressed in order to achieve more mainstream acceptance of water sensitive approaches to urban development. This study is based on existing water sensitive urban developments in Australia, however, the methodology adopted in investigating impediments to the uptake of these developments can be applied globally. It is hoped that insights from this study will benefit water professionals in other countries where there is also a move towards water sensitive urban development.

Within identity theory, there are two theoretical approaches that can be used to link identity processes to outcomes of psychological well-being such as high self-esteem, increased happiness, and decreased sadness and anger. The “identity accumulation” hypothesis says accumulating identities based on the social positions people hold provides increasing ontological anchoring and well-being for individuals. The “identity verification” hypothesis says verifying identities increases self-esteem and positive. The present research brings together data to simultaneously examine the merits of both approaches. Results show that identity accumulation does increase well-being, but only if those identities are highly verified. Identity accumulation decreases well-being if those identities are not verified. This suggests that to maintain self-esteem and happiness, one should take on more roles and identities to the extent that those roles can be performed well and the identities verified.

The “social question” and the disclosure of a wide range of the category “social state” are among the most popular in the research of scientists of various sciences. Political scientists, sociologists, economists, philosophers, historians and lawyers present us in the most favorable light the possibilities of the state influence of the past on the well-being of citizens through active and diverse intervention in various spheres of life. However, there is still no unified idea about the genesis of the social state and its features. The purpose of the study is not just to proclaim new stages in the evolution of the idea of a social state, but to establish clear criteria for their definition, which it is proposed to designate as a set (system) of the following features: 1) evolution (change, improvement) of the type of thinking, theoretical approaches; 2) economic and industrial evolution (change or improvement of economic and industrial relations); 3) legislation that affects the viability of the state; 4) the degree of satisfaction with the life of citizens (according to the results of independent sociological surveys). Based on the conducted historical analysis, it is concluded that the origins of the social state have their roots in Ancient Greece during the times of Solon and Pisistratus, who showed practical examples of social reformations.

The article examines modern theories of economic development in the context of social aspects. The aim of the study is to generalize the social aspects of modern economic theories of development to determine the trajectory and possible directions of social policy. The essence and evolution of models of economic development according to the concepts of welfare are determined. Many well-known foreign researchers are interested in the causes of the wealth of some nations and the poverty and decline of others. Thus, D. Acemoglu and J. Robinson proved that the main condition for achieving the well-being of nations are economic institutions – rules that determine the social efficiency of the economy, incentives and motivations of people, rather than natural and geographical factors. Norwegian A. Reinert believes that rich countries have become rich through a combination of government intervention, strategic investment and protectionism, rather than free trade. American economist M. Olson pointed to the role of private property, taxation, public goods, collective action and contractual rights in economic development. N. Rosenberg and L. Birzdel, A. Sen, E. Duflo and A. Banerjee emphasize that the only issue they focus on is how to increase the material well-being of people, which is measured by the presence of most opportunities to choose and shape the quality of their own lives, to fight not with the consequences of poverty, but with its causes, that is, starting with public education, basic medicine and hygiene. New theoretical approaches to the interpretation of social factors of economic development and social transformations in Ukraine have also been formed in the works of Ukrainian researchers. It is established that a prerequisite for the successful development of the national economic system is to ensure the priority of man, education, health care, environmental protection, which, in turn, stimulate significant economic potential and long-term prosperity of society.

This article studies the social well-being of the families of the Tyumen Region (excluding the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area — Yugra and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area). This article considers the theoretical approaches to the concept of “social well-being” presented in the Russian academic literature. The results of a sociological study conducted by the authors in 2020 are presented. The novelty of the research lies in highlighting the specifics of intraregional differentiation of the influence of factors influencing the social well-being of families. The main research method was a questionnaire survey, which allowed providing a quantitative description of the phenomenon under consideration. The construction of the research sample model was carried out taking into account the center-peripheral model, which implies the analysis of the data obtained in the context of various types of territories represented in the region. The volume of the quota sample of the study was 1,200 people — the representatives of regional families with children. The main goal of the article is to determine the general level of social well-being of regional families, as well as to show its specificity in such social-territorial communities as a large city, a small town, rural settlements of the central type and peripheral villages. The following were considered as the components of social well-being: satisfaction with various aspects of life; availability of social infrastructure facilities; assessment of the state of various spheres of life; problems that concern families, their needs. Based on the results of the analysis, it was concluded that in different types of settlements, the level and nature of social well-being change. This circumstance should become the object of close attention of the authorities implementing social policy. The authors noted the need to develop a social policy that takes into account the spatial characteristics of the region. At the same time, the research component is of great importance, which makes it possible to analyze the problems of families in a territorial context, and it is also important to develop clear criteria for the classification of socio-territorial communities, taking into account the tendencies of their changes over time.

Purpose An increasing effort to reinforce cultural and social activities in creative placemaking is observed. Despite extensive previous studies, works of literature ignored the necessary group-specific indicators and processes in creative placemaking. In successful placemaking, the vital attributes of a place as a social platform should be identified and intensified in the initiatives taken. As such, this study aims to examine the functions of urban design social attributes in generating meaningful creative placemaking initiatives. Design/methodology/approach A survey was performed, which involved 340 visitors in the inner city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from one case study (a strategic social event initiative called RIUH) on users’ preference toward the social attributes of place and the factors influencing preference. Field observations were carried out to understand the social activities and pattern of engagement. Findings The preference study revealed that urban design social attributes encompassed the essential inclusiveness, value, diversity and vitality of place because of high preference and a significant difference among groups. Social implications Understanding users’ preferences has emphasized the relevance of each urban design social attribute in accommodating different user opportunity groups, ultimately inducing a positive social impact in creative placemaking. Originality/value This study demonstrated the success of creative placemaking in urban development from the social dimension. It provides an understanding that the priority of creative practices should be redirected toward a more in-depth approach in addressing individuals, social capacity, involvement and well-being through the optimization of benefits and other creative placemaking values.
