The aim of this paper is to examine the impact of changes in concentrationcaused by, among others, mergers and acquisitions on the level of competitionin the Polish banking sector in the years 1997–2012. The Lerner index was usedto measure competition in the Polish banking sector while CR5 and HHI indiceswere used as a measure of concentration. The article also addresses the impactof competition on risk in the Polish banking sector. The results of quantitativeanalysis showed that in the period before the financial crisis (1997-2007) the levelof concentration had a positive impact on the level of competition, i.e. the increasein the concentration was accompanied by increase in the level of competition.

AbstractWe investigate whether and how government interventions in the U.S. banking sector influence the stock market performance of corporate borrowers during the financial crisis of 2007–2009. We measure firms’ exposures to government interventions with an intervention score that is based on combined information on the firms’ structure of bank relationships and their banks’ participation in government capital support programs. We find that government capital infusions in banks have a significantly positive impact on borrowing firms’ stock returns. The effect is more pronounced for riskier and bank-dependent firms and for those that borrow from banks that are less capitalized and smaller.

Purpose This study aims to analyse three main questions within the Malaysian banking system: Are Islamic banks more competitive than conventional banks? What are the levels of competition for Islamic and conventional banking sectors pre, during and post the 2007-2009 global financial crisis? Does penetration of Islamic banks affect the competitive structure of conventional banks? Design/methodology/approach In measuring a bank competition, the author estimates the Panzar–Rosse H-statistic (PRH) method on 17 Islamic and 21 conventional banks in Malaysia over the period of 2004-2013. This is then followed by ordinary least squares (OLS) robust regression analysis to control Islamic banks’ penetration, bank-specific and macroeconomic factors. Findings Results from the PRH method (total revenue) suggest that Malaysian Islamic banks are relatively more competitive than their conventional counterparts. Furthermore, the author observes that the level of competition for both Malaysian Islamic and conventional banks increased tremendously during the 2007-2009 global financial crisis. This suggests the impact of the crisis on the level of competition for both banking systems. Finally, the OLS robust regression suggests that Islamic banks’ penetration has a significantly positive impact on the level of competition for conventional banks. The PRH estimation using total interest income indicates similar results, suggesting the robustness of these results. Practical implications This study reveals whether Islamic banks’ penetration is able to increase the level of competition within the conventional banking sector. Knowledge on this is important to the policymaker. Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first study using the PRH method in comparing the level of competition for Malaysian Islamic and conventional banks. Furthermore, this is the first study analysing the impact of Malaysian Islamic banks’ penetration on the level of competition for conventional banks.

This study makes an attempt to estimate the impact of horizontal mergers and acquisitions that have taken place in eight selected banks/companies of five Indian private sectors. An event study methodology has been used to explore the effects on the investments of shareholders of the selected company mergers that have taken place during the period 2010 to 2018. This study of stock market valuation and estimation of effective, abnormal and cumulative average abnormal returns in the context of Indian horizontal mergers has shown interesting findings. The results indicate that the mergers and acquisitions in the banking sector have shown a positive impact on the investors of both Kotak Mahindra bank, the bidder bank and ING Vysya bank, the target bank. Further, in the case of pharmaceutical sector the M&A has shown a positive impact on the investors of both bidder company (Torrent Pharma) and the target company (Unichem Laboratories Ltd). In case of first merger considered under the steel sector and in the Oil &Gas industry (only one merger), the negative impact is found both on the investors of bidder and target companies.In the rest of the mergers considered for this study, mixed reaction of both positive and negative returns has been found. The findings of this study provide input to both the acquiring and the target company shareholders. The acquiring company tends to overbid for acquiring the target company, therefore this process mostly benefits the target company’s shareholders at the cost of acquiring company shareholders. Hence, the management of the acquiring company should be vigilant.

This paper aims at verifying the relationship between book value and  market value for a four years period (2006-2009) in Europe, under IFRS. In particular, I used value relevance approach to measure whether net income or comprehensive income are more useful to understand the relationship between market data and financial data. Moreover, the paper analyzes the impact of financial crisis on the value relevance of accounting data. The examination period runs from a pre-crisis period (2006-2007) to an in-crisis period (2008-2009). Results shows that comprehensive income is more value relevant than net income. Furthermore, the financial crisis has a positive impact on value relevance.

The study considers the essence and effects of economic integration on the Euro zone banking sector. The study explains that the intensification of economic integration of European countries provides a competitive environment for banks. The results found that the integration at the macro level increases the international competitiveness of the banking sector by creating a more transparent single secure market and increasing its capacity through the application of common rules and administrative standards for banking supervision and resolution, and on the meso- and micro levels increases the international competitiveness of banking institutions by increasing efficiency and profitability by increasing the volume of cross-border banking activities within the Euro zone. The conclusions suggest the main instruments of ECB’s monetary policy have a positive impact on improving the competitiveness of the banking sector by removing barriers to cross-border competition. Such instruments helped to create a large and transparent capital market, increase banking sector competitiveness by intensifying competition and efficiency of banks.

Abstract. The globalization of markets, the need to comply with modern economic trends and introduce new technological solutions to increase the profitability of the banking business have significantly intensified the processes of mergers and acquisitions in the banking sector. M&A processes are long and complex, their results are difficult to forecast in lack of actual detailed research. The diversity of the results of the available research requires updating the data based on larger volumes of transactions and larger time intervals. The purpose of the article is to substantiate two hypotheses: first, the impact of M&A agreements especially on the increase in the value of banks; and impact of factors that show economic development level on the value of banks. The object of the study is the relationship between the value of commercial banks in domestic and foreign financial markets, M&A agreements, as well as economic indicators published by the World Bank and measuring the level of economic development of countries. The article uses statistical modeling method. The constructed model of linear regression allows to state that the fact of influence of M&A on growth of cost of consolidated banks is fair for 54.8% of cases. The study shows that the M&A processes have the greatest impact on the value of banks in the interval of 3—5 years after the conclusion of the agreement. Analysis of the relationship between economic indicators and the growth of bank value shows that the greatest impact on the value of banks has percent of the growth of GDP and GDP per capita, but the low value of the determinant at 22.9% indicates a low dependence of bank value on the level of economic indicators in general. It was found that external factors do not directly affect the growth in the value of banks in the process of M&A transactions. The question of expanding the system of factors that will influence the M&A processes and, as a consequence, the value of the banks, will be the subject of further research. This chapter, first, draws an overview of the theoretical and conceptual framework of corporate decisions in the global financial crisis (GFC) context. Then, it shows the connectedness of corporate finance and international trade. Finally, employing a rich dataset, this chapter assesses the impact of international trade as well as the GFC on corporate financial decisions, particularly cash holdings, debt financing, and dividend payouts over the period 2002-2016. The findings show that international trade significantly affects corporate decisions. Firms with higher trade countries have higher debt level but lower cash and dividends across the globe. During the GFC, the positive impact of trade on debt shifts to negative. Also, trade has a positive effect on both cash and debt in the aftermath of the GFC. Taken together, international trade as an institutional setting influences corporate decisions and its role on cash, debt, and dividend differ during and after the GFC.

This chapter begins by explaining that financialization since the financial crisis has continued. The chapter then shows how the real culture of banking has not changed as a result. It examines the business models of the largest Anglo-American banks and the impact of Quantitative Easing to show the disconnect between the banks and their respective economies. It then examines rising household indebtedness, and the lending practices of the banks that exploit the heavily indebted. Finally it explores pay in the financial sector, showing that fixed and variable remuneration remain out of proportion to the value-added of the banking sector, and disproportionately high compared to pay in most other sectors. The conclusion we should draw is that bank culture has actually changed very little.

Current study aims to critically investigate the impact of HR practices on organizational commitment of employees in the Banking Sector of Pakistan. The impact of training, compensation, performance evaluation, and promotion practices have been assessed on affective, normative and continuance commitment of employees via 12 hypotheses. Survey methodology was adopted via using structured questionnaire. A sample of 100 respondents was drawn from the employees working with various branches of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) located in Lahore, Pakistan. Collected data was subjected to Pearson Correlation and Regression analysis. The results of Pearson Correlation matrix demonstrated a positive correlation between HR practices and organizational commitment of employees which confirms all proposed hypotheses. Regression results showed a significant positive impact of training and performance evaluation on organizational commitment of employees. However, the significance of compensation and promotional practices could not be proved.
