The role of categories of knowledge, or disciplines, in science has not previously been explored in scientonomy. While disciplinary communities devoted to the production of knowledge are a modern phenomenon, the practice of dividing knowledge into categories is a universal feature of science. Although at any moment of time, many questions and theories can be part of a given discipline, not all of these are essential to the discipline. We show that two components are essential to a discipline: the discipline’s core questions as well as the discipline’s delineating theory, a second-order theory that identifies these questions as essential to the discipline. If the questions of one discipline are a proper subset of the questions of another discipline, the former discipline is a subdiscipline of the latter. Since a discipline is a complex entity consisting of questions and a theory, epistemic agents can take epistemic stances towards disciplines. A discipline is said to be accepted if its core questions and its delineating theory are all accepted. To illustrate the applicability of these new concepts, the transition from physical to biological anthropology is discussed.

Abstract Synthesis has become ubiquitous in ecology. Despite its widespread application to a broad range of research topics, it remains unclear how synthesis has affected the discipline. Using a case study of publications (n = 2304) from the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis compared with papers with similar keywords from the Web of Science (n = 320,000), we address several questions about the comparative impact of synthesis, the role of synthesis in driving key research themes, and whether synthesis is focused on different topics than is the broader ecological literature. We found much higher citation rates for synthesis papers overall (fivefold more) and within eleven key topic themes (e.g., species richness, biodiversity, climate change, global change). Synthesis papers often played key roles in driving, redirecting, or resolving core questions and exhibited much greater cross-theme connectivity. Together, these results indicate that synthesis in science has played a crucial role in accelerating and advancing ecological knowledge.

Faraci, Frank M., and Donald D. Heistad. Regulation of the Cerebral Circulation: Role of Endothelium and Potassium Channels. Physiol. Rev. 78: 53–97, 1998. — Several new concepts have emerged in relation to mechanisms that contribute to regulation of the cerebral circulation. This review focuses on some physiological mechanisms of cerebral vasodilatation and alteration of these mechanisms by disease states. One mechanism involves release of vasoactive factors by the endothelium that affect underlying vascular muscle. These factors include endothelium-derived relaxing factor (nitric oxide), prostacyclin, and endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor(s). The normal vasodilator influence of endothelium is impaired by some disease states. Under pathophysiological conditions, endothelium may produce potent contracting factors such as endothelin. Another major mechanism of regulation of cerebral vascular tone relates to potassium channels. Activation of potassium channels appears to mediate relaxation of cerebral vessels to diverse stimuli including receptor-mediated agonists, intracellular second messengers, and hypoxia. Endothelial- and potassium channel-based mechanisms are related because several endothelium-derived factors produce relaxation by activation of potassium channels. The influence of potassium channels may be altered by disease states including chronic hypertension, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and diabetes.

This paper's purpose is to exam Turner's (2006a) thesis that Britain neither produced its own public intellectuals nor a distinctive sociology. It aims to outline difficulties with the logic of Turner's argument rather than to discuss any particular public intellectual in Britain. The paper argues that Turner's claim about the comparative insignificance of public intellectuals in Britain reinforces the myth of British exceptionalism and overlooks the significance of the contribution to the public sphere by intellectuals from other disciplines than sociology. It discusses Turner's assumption that intellectual innovation requires massive disruptive and violent change and suggests that such an assertion is not necessarily supported by studies of the conditions of the production of knowledge. Finally, the paper argues that Turner's anguish at the absence of public intellectuals among sociologists in Britain is symptomatic of New Left thinking that models the idea of the intellectual on Gramsci. In conclusion, the paper asserts that Turner's idea of the intellectual fails to note the tension at the heart of the role of public intellectual–the tension between specialist and non-specialist functions.

Two higher-order analytical models based on a new higher-order theory for sandwich plates with flexible cores are developed considering the effect of the core material density and skin-to-core-stiffness-ratio (SCSR). The main difference between the two models is the role of the flexible core in the dynamic response of sandwich plates with cores of different stiffnesses. Firstly, the governing equations of a simply supported sandwich plate with a flexible core are derived based on the two models, and the analytical solutions are determined by using Navier’s approach. Then, the free vibration, static, dynamic bending and stress field characteristics of the sandwich plates with different SCSRs are investigated. The results obtained by the proposed method are compared with other published results. In particular, an accuracy assessment of the present dynamic models is conducted for different SCSRs. Finally, conclusions on the applicability of the proposed method and other theories on sandwich plates with different SCSRs are drawn.

The results of treatment of localized (early) pancreatic cancer are unsatisfactory despite all achievements of modern clinical and surgical oncology. Nevertheless, certain success was achieved even in these extremely unfavorable patients regarding their prognosis. The authors analyzed evolution of adjuvant therapy, as well as new concepts in the treatment of borderline resectable and resectable pancreatic cancer. Modern anticancer therapy with acceptable toxicity profile significantly improved the outcomes. However, further research is needed to improve the effectiveness of treatment despite favorable current results.

I am particularly concerned with approaching from a critical perspective –through the role of images in the creation of meaning and production of knowledge– this transitional moment, in order to explore the gaps, residues and failures in the discourse of social and political normalization that composes it.KEYWORDS Image-time, memory, violence, transitional processes, policies of time and the visual. t “Paisajes Afrocaucanos: la caña de azúcar, la finca tradicional y los afectos alimenticios”. Article is devoted to consideration of questions of transformation of a modern role of the teacher of high school which changes and supplements a substantial basis of its professional competence and demands reconsideration and acceptance of new concepts. The role and the functions of the teacher connected with problems of education of youth in educational space of high school that promotes formation of communicative skills and social intelligence of competitors of higher education which of objects of influence become its subjects is characterised. It is defined that consulting preceptorship of group carries out adviser – the key subject of the socially-humanitarian influence which functions essentially differ from functions of the curator in traditional understanding. Socially-humanitarian functions and roles of adviser of groups of competitors of higher education are presented, socially-humanitarian directions and forms of its work. Status definition in educational process of an institution of higher education of student's advisers is proved, the purpose of their activity, the primary goals and functions. The conclusion, concerning modern development of the Ukrainian higher school, its European orientation which demands from teachers of performance of a certain number of roles – not as instructors and a source of knowledge and as couch, facilitator, the tutor, the moderator, the mentor and adviser of an individual educational trajectory of competitors of higher education is drawn.
