AbstractNew conical-shaped geometrical supramolecular H-bonded liquid crystal complexes were formed through 1:2 intermolecular interactions of H-bonding between flexible core (adipic acid, A) and lateral chloro-substituted azopyridines (Bn). The chains of the terminally alkoxy substituted base (n) were changed between 8 and 16 carbons. Mesomorphic and optical examinations of the prepared complexes were measured via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to confirm the Fermi bands of the H- bonding interactions. Induced nematogenic mesophases that cover the whole lengths of alkoxy-chains were detected. The non-linear geometries of the designed supramolecular complexes were also confirmed via Density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It was found that the length of terminal alkoxy chain of the base moiety highly affects the geometrical structure of the investigated complexes. Moreover, it increases the thermodynamic energy and influences the geometrical parameters. The electrical properties of each of the acid component (A), the base (B16) and their 1:2 complex (A/2B16) were evaluated using the Keithley measurement-source unit. The optical properties studies showed that the influences in the optical absorption and the reduction of the energy gap of the complex compared to its individual components made the resulted supramolecular H-bonded complex soft material suitable for solar energy investigations.

This paper aims to investigate experimentally and using finite element analysis the performance of using three-dimensional printing technology to produce a composite sandwich panel that is made of the high-flexible core as well as with high stiffness upper and lower surfaces made of a glass fiber reinforced composite filament. There are many advantages of using sandwich structures in many applications, especially the aerospace field, where the high stiffness to strength and the lightweight is the most preferred in such applications. The conventional manufacturing methods that are used to produce sandwich panels are limited to particular core geometry, whereas manufacturing a composite core is not possible by these traditional production methods. So by using additive manufacturing technology, it becomes more applicable to design a combination of different geometries and materials to achieve properties that have never been made before, especially combining flexibility and high energy absorption keeping high strength to failure. A central deflection to a length of 0.26 is observed within the elastic zone, a remarkable ratio in beams that reflects the three-dimensional printed sandwich beams’ capability with a highly flexible core to absorb energy that would open doors for many industrial applications that is attributed to the lowest flexural rigidity (167E-3Pa · m4) of the sandwich by using the TriHex infill pattern. In contrast, the Gyroid infill structure could afford the highest central load (0.264 kN). At the peak load applied on the sandwich beam, a maximum error of 5.4% is estimated by finite element analysis lower than the experimental values.

New laterally CH3-substituted series of 1:2 hydrogen-bonded supramolecular complexes (HBSMCs) based on flexible acid core were prepared and mesomorphically investigated. Mixtures were formed through H-bonded interactions between adipic acid (A) and 4-(2-(pyridin-4-yl)diazenyl-(3-methylphenyl) 4-alkoxybenzoate (Bn). Mesomorphic and optical properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV-spectroscopy. HBSMCs formed from 1:2 mol mixture of A:2Bn, where the base component (B) bearing different alkoxy chain lengths from n = 8 to 14. The new HBSMCs (A/2B) interactions were confirmed by Fermi-bands formation via FT-IR spectroscopy measurements. Results revealed that all prepared HBSMCs are enantiotropic, exhibiting induced nematic (N) phase. The XRD pattern confirmed the POM texture results. Moreover, a comparison was made between the new laterally HBSMC series based on flexible core and the previously analyzed laterally neat complexes.

Nonlinear dynamic response with stability analysis of a sandwich structure with flexible core are investigated by integration of variational asymptotic method (VAM) and the first-order shear deformation theory. A simply supported sandwich structure is subjected to an harmonic transverse excitation in thermal environments. Generalized 2 D Reissner-Mindlin type stiffness matrices including an equivalent transverse shear matrix are obtained based on through-the-thickness analysis using VAM without invoking any ad hoc kinematic assumptions. The governing equation is derived using Hamilton’s principle taking into account von K[Formula: see text]rm[Formula: see text]n geometric nonlinearity. Galerkin’s method is employed to develop a nonlinear differential equation of the problem with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities, which are associated with the coupling of the in-plane stretching and transverse deflection due to thermal moments. Periodic solutions are determined using the incremental harmonic balance (IHB) method and incremental arc-length technique. The stability is evaluated by Routh-Hurwitz theory. The effects of the temperature variation, geometric parameters and material properties on the resonance as well as amplitude of steady state vibration are investigated through a detail parametric study.
