An experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of AZOMITE® as source of natural minerals on growth performance of commercial broiler. A total of 1,020 day-old Cobb 500 male broiler chicks were randomly allocated to 5 dietary treatments with 6 replications per treatment having 34 chicks in each pen. The five dietary treatments were: (i) basal diet without AZOMITE®, (ii) basal diet with 0.25% AZOMITE®, (iii) basal diet with 0.50% AZOMITE® which was recommended by manufacturer, (iv) basal diet with 0.75% AZOMITE® and (v) basal diet with 1.0% AZOMITE®. Broilers were reared in open-sided gable type house for a period of 32 days. Results showed that the supplementation of AZOMITE® had significant effect on growth performance (p<0.01) of broilers. Live body weight (LBW), body weight gain (BWG), average daily gain (ADG), feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), European efficiency factor (EEF) and gain cost of the birds fed various levels of AZOMITE® were significantly improved as compared to the control. Meat characteristics results indicated that the treatments had no significant effect on dressing percent, thigh, drumsticks and breast percentage among the dietary groups. Taken together, it may be concluded that the supplementation of AZOMITE® in commercial broiler at 0.50 to 1.0% improved live weight, feed intake and feed conversion ratio of commercial broilers. The effect of dietary treatments on growth performance, haematological and biochemical indices of finisher broilers as well as economics of broiler production were determined in this experiment. Four broiler finisher diets were formulated with different inclusion levels of fermented cassava flour/blood mixture code-named “cassablood”. The control diet (T1) contained 0% cassablood, while diets 2, 3 and 4 contained 20%, 25% and 30%  cassablood respectively. 120 four weeks old Anak broiler chicken were randomly allocated the 4 diets with 30 birds per treatment replicated 3 times with ten 10 broilers per replicate in a completely randomized design (CRD).Treatment effects on final body weight, final weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio were significant (P<0.05). Birds fed cassabloodbased diets compared favourably with the control diet. 20% cassablood inclusion performed equally with the control diet in feed intake, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio. All dietary groups also showed no significant differences (P>0.05) in most haematological and serum biochemical indices of broilers except in cholesterol, glucose and triglyceride contents which differed (P<0.05) significantly Similarly, chicken on 20% and 25% inclusion levels produced significantly (P < 0.05) higher economic gains in terms of feed cost per kilogram of broiler among all the treatments. Therefore, 20 - 25% cassablood dietary inclusion level was recommended in broiler diet for production and profit maximization.

An experiment was conducted to determine the impact of Plantain (PL), Bio-Sel-E and commercial broiler diet on the growth performance, feed conversion ratio, performance index and carcass yield of broiler. A total of 160 day old broiler chicks (Cobb-500) were randomly distributed into four groups with four replication in each group and having 10 birds in each replication. Basal diet was used for group 1 (control), Basal diet was supplemented with PL (0.5% of DM basis) and Bio-Sel-E (5g/50 birds in drinking water) for group 2 and 3 respectively and for group 4 used commercial broiler diet (Quality Feed Ltd.). Total feed intake was similar among the groups. Feed conversion ratios of PL diet, Bio-Sel-E diet, and commercial broiler diet were comparable, and were lower (P<0.05) than the control diet. Significantly higher body weight gain and performance index were found in PL, Bio-Sel-E and commercial broiler diet groups than control diet. The dressing yield of PL diet and commercial broiler diet were comparable, and they were higher (P<0.05) than Control diet and Bio-Sel-E diet. It could be concluded that the Supplementation of 0.5% PL in the diet had positive effect on growth, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, performance index and carcass characteristics of broilers almost similar of Bio-Sel-E and commercial broiler diet. A feeding trial of 42 days was conducted to discern the effect of dietary incorporation of giloe and cinnamon powder on growth performance in commercial broilers .One hundred and twenty, day old Vencobb broiler chicks were procured and divided randomly into 6 treatment groups with 2 replicates of 10 chicks each viz., T1 (control) were fed basal diet whereas in treatment group T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6, basal diet was incorporated with 1% giloe, 2% giloe, 1% cinnamon, 2% cinnamon and combination of 1% giloe and 1% cinnamon, respectively. During starter phase (0-21 days), the body weight gain was significantly (P£0.05) higher in T3incorporated with 2% giloe. The feed conversion ratio was significantly (P£0.05) improved in broiler chicks fed diet incorporated with 1% giloe (T2). The performance index was significantly better in T2 and T3 compared to other groups. During finisher phase (22-42 days), the feed conversion ratio was significantly better in T2 and T6 compared to other groups. Performance index was significantly higher in T2 incorporated with 1% giloe. During the whole experimental period (0-42 days), incorporation of 1 % giloe improved broiler performance in terms of body weight, weight gain, feed conversion ratio and performance index. The average body weight gain of T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6 were 1408.8, 1580.2, 1540.3, 1517.2, 1474.4 and 1551.0g, respectively. It can be concluded that giloe and/or cinnamon in combination can be fed to broilers to improve growth performance.

A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was comprised 2x3 factorial arrangements of two breeds (DYL and local breed) and three different lysine levels. The 18 weeks old, nine castrated DYL and nine local breed were randomly allocated in each individual pen to six treatment groups with three replicates into 18 pens. Two breeds of pigs (DYL and local breed) were exposed to the three different dietary treatments, L1- basal diet without lysine supplementation, L2- basal diet with 0.95% total lysine for finisher and L3- basal diet with 1.45% total lysine for finisher. The growth performance and back fat thickness were determined for finishing pigs. Significantly better body weight, weight gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and lower back fat were observed in pigs fed L2 but did not significantly differ from those fed L3. Otherwise, diets without lysine supplementation (L1) showed no better effect on the growth performances of both DYL and local breeds. It could be noted that L2 was the best level to obtain optimal growth performances and feed efficiency. Between the two breeds, growth performances of DYL were superior over that of local breed. Back fat thicknesses of DYL were also thinner than that of local breed. The interactions were observed between lysine levels and different breeds regard for final body weight, cumulative gain and feed conversion ratio. It was noticeable that lysine supplementation helped to improve growth performance and reduce back fat thickness of both local breed and DYL crossed breed. The result also showed that a comparison of the two different breed revealed the improved performances in DYL crossed breed rather than that of local breed.

The present study was carried out at the Poultry Farm, College of Veterinary Medicine -Baghdad University, for powder sweet basil plant evaluation as feed additives, and its effect on the performance and health of broiler. Three hundred one day old Hubbard broiler chicks were used in this study. Chicks were weighed and randomly divided into 10 treatments groups, with 2 replicates (15chicks each).These groups were fed with the following rations: The 1st group was fed the basal diet (control group).The 2nd,3rd and 4th groups were fed the basal diet+0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 % basil powder for the first 3 weeks only respectively. At the 5th, 6th and 7th groups were fed the same basal diet +0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 % basil powder for the second 3 weeks respectively. While the 8th, 9th and 10th were fed the same basal diet with 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 % basil powder along the whole six weeks. The experiment was terminated when birds were 6 weeks old. Weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio were measured at the end of first three weeks and also at the end of the experiment. The results revealed that adding sweet basil powder significantly (P< 0.05) increased live body weight, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio as compared with the control, especially on the level 3%, 4%, 5% of Sweet basil powder addition along the whole period of the experiment and There was a significant (P< 0.05) decrease in total feed intake compared with the control group.

Background The benefits of probiotics being used in animals are well-documented via evidenced growth performance improvement and positive modulations of gut microbiota (GM). Thus, a combination of effective microorganisms (EM) has been frequently used in animal production, including broilers. However, there are only very limited reports of EM on the growth performance and the modulation in GM of partridge shank broiler chicks. Methods We attempted to evaluate the effects of a basal diet with the addition of an EM mixture on the growth performance and gut microbiome of the chicks. A total of 100 ten-day-old female partridge shank broiler chicks were randomly divided into two groups of 50 chicks each, of which, one group fed with EM supplementation in the basal diet (designated as EM-treated group), the other group just fed with a basal diet (referred as to non-EM treated group or control group). The body weight, daily feed intake, daily gain, feed conversion ratio and other growth parameters were observed and compared between EM-treated and non-EM-treated chicks, and the gut microbiota was profiled by 16S rRNA-based next generation sequencing (NGS). Results EM-treated chicks showed significantly increased performances in body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG) and reduced feed conversion ratio (FCR). Histological observation indicated that dietary supplementation of EM significantly increased the villus heights (VH) and the ratio of villus height to crypt depth (VH/CD), while decreased the CD of jejunum, ilea, and ceca. The results of 16S rRNA-based gut microbiota analyses showed that Firmicutes accounted for the most of the relative abundance (63.24%∼92.63%), followed by Proteobacteria (0.62%∼23.94%), Bacteroidetes (0.80%∼7.85%), Actinobacteria (0.06%∼13.69%) and others in both EM-treated and non-EM-treated broiler chicks. The addition of EM could not alter the alpha diversity of gut microbiota. Compared with the non-EM-treated chicks, the abundances of bad bacteria in the phyla of Firmicutes, Euryarchaeota, and Ruminococcus were dramatically decreased in that of EM-treated chicks, while the abundances of good bacteria in the phyla of Actinobacteria and WPS-2 were significantly increased. Conclusions The supplementation of EM in feed could improve the growth performance and positively influence the morphological characteristics of the intestine, and ameliorate the community and structure of the intestinal microbiota of partridge shank broiler chicks.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of microencapsulated butyric (MEB) acid on growth performance, apparent ileal digestibility of protein (AID), duodenal morphology and immunity in broilers reared to 35-days. In total, 336 one-day-old Hubbard classic broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 4 dietary treatments (Control, 0.25, 0.35 and 0.45g/kg of MEB). Each treatment was replicated 3 times with 28 birds in each replicate. Feed intake, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR), parameters of growth performance and intestinal morphology, AID of protein and immunity parameters were evaluated. At the end of the experiment (35-d), 3 birds / replicate were randomly selected and slaughtered to collect blood, duodenal samples, and ileal digesta. The result indicated improved body weight gain (P<0.05), feed conversion ratio (P<0.05) and AID (P<0.05) whereas, treatments remained unresponsive with respect to feed intake (P>0.05), duodenal villous height (P>0.05) and antibody titer against Newcastle disease (ND) (P>0.05). There is an indication that MEB improves the digestion and consequently bird’s performance.

The study was conducted to investigate the growth performance of broiler birds fed varying dietary levels of Artemisia annua. A total of 90 broiler chickens (Arbor Acre strain) were used. The study lasted for eight weeks. At the starter phase, 90 fourteen-day old broiler chicks were randomly allocated to five groups and fed starter diets containing five levels of A. annua (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 g per kg of diet, respectively). At the finisher phase, 90 forty-two-day old finisher broilers were randomly allocated to five groups and fed finisher diets containing five levels of A. annua (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 g per kg of diet, respectively). Each group was replicated three times with six birds per replicate in a completely randomized design. Parameter measured includes body weight, average daily feed intake, feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio. The result of the proximate composition showed that Artemisia annua leaf meal contained 10.50% moisture, 26.27% crude protein, 5.00% crude fibre, 9.60% ash, 2.00% ether extract and 46.63% nitrogen-free extract. The result showed that at the starter phase, the inclusion of varying levels of A. annua in the starter diets had significant (p < 0.05) effect on the final body weight (FBW) of birds. Birds fed diet 2 (diet containing 50g of A. annua per kg diet) had significantly (p<0.05) higher final body weight (FBW) value (1115.00g) than those fed diet 5 (diet containing 200g of A. annua per kg of diet) which had FBW value of 915.00g. Dietary treatments had no significant (p > 0.05) effect on average daily feed intake (ADFI), total weight gain (TWG), average daily weight gain (ADWG), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and protein efficient ratio(PER) of the birds. At the finisher phase, significant (p < 0.05) differences existed among treatments in ADWG, TWG, FBW and ADFI. Birds fed diet containing 50 g A. annua per kg diet had significantly (p < 0.05) higher ADWG, TWG and FWG values than those fed the control diet. However, no significant (p > 0.05) differences existed among treatments in FCR and PER. It is concluded that A. annua leaf meal can be included in the diet of starter and finisher broilers at 200g per kg of diet without any deleterious effect on the growth performance of birds.

Thirty growing rabbits with mean body weight of 516.67g were used in a feeding trial that lasted for 56 days. The animals were randomly distributed into five (5) dietary treatment groups consisting of six (6) animals per group. Each treatment group was replicated six (6) times with individually housed rabbit per replicate. The five dietary treatments contained 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% replacement levels of Delonix regia seed meal (DRSM) for maize in a completely randomized design experiment. The parameters investigated during the study were feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion ratio and feed cost. At the end of the feeding trial, blood samples were collected from the animals through the ear vein for haematology and serum biochemistry. Fifteen (15) animals at the rate of 3 animals per dietary treatment were stunned and sacrificed for the determination of carcass analysis. Samples of visceral organs and primal parts were collected from the animals for carcass yield evaluation. Data obtained were subjected to one-way analysis of variance. The inclusion of DRSM in rabbit diets did not significantly (p>0.05) influence the daily feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion ratio of the animals. The carcass parameters except the forelegs and all the organ weights were not significantly (p<0.05) affected by the dietary treatments. The highest value (3.85%) of the forelegs was obtained in treatment 4 (75% DRSM). The corresponding values of 3.35, 3.39 and 3.40 respectively for animals in treatments 1, 2 and 5 were similar but lower than that on treatment 4 and higher than 3.19% of treatment 3. Feeding of DRSM to rabbits did not show any significant (p>0.05) variation in both the haematological and biochemical components of the rabbits studied except the globulin. The globulins (g/dl) were 1.50, 3.0, 1.70, 3.30 and 1.75 respectively for animals on treatment 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. All these haematological and serum biochemical parameters were within the normal physiological ranges for rabbits. Cost per Kg feed and cost of feed per Kg live weight decreased significantly (p<0.05) with increased replacement levels of DRSM for maize in the diets with 100% substitution having the least cost. The results suggest that DRSM could completely replace maize (up to 100%) without any deleterious effect on the growth performance, carcass, haematology and serum biochemistry of rabbits. Therefore DRSM may be a panacea to high cost of maize and can be recommended for rrabbit farmers.
