The present study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant, cytotoxic, thrombolytic, membrane stabilizing and antimicrobial activities of methanol extracts and different organic soluble partitionates of leaves of Murraya koenigii and bark of Adina cordifolia. In the DPPH free radical scavenging assay, the chloroform soluble fraction of methanol extracts of M. koenigii and A. cordifolia revealed the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 values of 6.9 ± 0.78 ?g/ml and 6.83 ± 0.29 ?g/ml, while the methanolic crude extract of M. koenigii and A. cordifolia displayed the highest cytotoxic potential having LC50 values of 1.94 ± 0.36 ?g/ml and 0.88 ± 0.64 ?g/ml, respectively as compared to standard vincristine sulphate (LC50 value of 0.45 ?g/ml). During assay for thrombolytic activity, the crude extracts of M. koenigii and A. cordifolia showed 8.6 ± 0.48 % and 9.25 ± 0.84% clot lysis, respectively. In the membrane stabilizing assay, the methanol extract of M. koenigii inhibited 62.80 ± 0.81 % and 21.23 ± 0.84 % hypotonic solution- and heat-induced haemolysis of RBCs as compared to 72.2 % and 42.2 % inhibition by acetyl salicylic acid (0.10 mg/ml), respectively. On the other hand, the methanol extract of A. cordifolia demonstrated 42.04 ± 0.57 % and 21.57 ± 0.22 % inhibition of hypotonic solution- and heat-induced hemolysis, respectively. The extractives of A. cordifolia exhibited antibacterial activity with zone of inhibition ranging from 8.0 to 26.0 mm against the test microorganisms with the highest zone of inhibition (26.0 mm) against Salmonella Typhi. Although the methanol extract of leaf of M. koenigii as well as its pet ether and aqueous soluble fractions demonstrated no antimicrobial activity, the carbon tetrachloride soluble fraction (CTC) revealed moderate antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (16.0 mm).Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Journal 18(1): 25-29, 2015

The study was designed to evaluate the bioactivities of crude methanol extracts of leaves of Malvaviscus arboreus and Phyllanthus reticulatus along with their pet-ether, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and aqueous soluble partitionates. The antioxidant potential was evaluated by DPPH and Folin-Ciocalteau reagents using butylated hydroxytolune (BHT) and ascorbic acid as standards. In the DPPH free radical scavenging assay, the crude methanol extract of M. arboreus revealed the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 values 6.47 ± 0.78 ?g/ml. In brine shrimp lethality bioassay, the chloroform soluble materials of M. arboreus displayed the highest cytotoxic potential having LC50 values 2.73 ± 0.36 ?g/ml, whereas the standard vincristine sulphate exhibited an LC50 value of 0.45 ?g/ml. In the thrombolytic activity assay, the pet-ether soluble fractions of M. arboreus and P. reticulatus revealed 55.60 ± 0.48 % and 18.99 ± 0.84% clot lysis, respectively. In the membrane stabilizing activity assay, the chloroform soluble fraction of M. arboreus inhibited heat- and hypotonic solution- induced haemolysis of RBCs by 54.60 ± 0.81 % and 66.96 ± 0.84 % as compared to 57.06 % and 72.79 % inhibition by acetyl salicylic acid (0.10 mg/ml), respectively. On the other hand, the pet-ether soluble materials of crude methanol extract of P. reticulatus demonstrated 57.11 ± 0.57 % and 70.62 ± 0.22 % inhibition of heat- and hypotonic solution- induced hemolysis, respectively. The methanol extracts of whole plant of Cissus adnata (Roxb.) and their organic and aqueous soluble partitioning materials were evaluated for antioxidant, cytotoxic and membrane stabilizing properties. In the DPPH free radical scavenging assay, the aqueous extract of whole plant of C. adnata displayed the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 value of 4.17 ?g/ml, while the pet ether soluble fraction showed significant lethality to brine shrimps having LC50 value of 1.02 ?g/ml, as compared to the standard vincristine sulphate (LC50 value of 0.44 ?g/ml). In the evaluation for membrane stabilizing property, the pet ether soluble fraction of methanol extract of the whole plant inhibited 67.43 % and 56.60 % hypotonic solution- and heat-induced haemolysis of RBCs, respectively.Dhaka Univ. The crude methanol extracts of the bark and leaves of Syzygium fruticosum (Roxb.) DC. were partitioned with petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and water for biological investigation. In the brine shrimp lethality bioassay, carbon tetrachloride soluble fraction of leaf extract (LCTF) showed significant lethality having the LC50 value 0.65 ?g/ml. In free radical scavenging activity screening (DPPH assay), chloroform fraction of methanolic extract of bark of S. fruticosum showed the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 value 20.01 ?g/ml. In the microbiological investigation, only chloroform soluble fraction of bark (BCF) and aqueous fraction of bark (BAF) showed mild antimicrobial activity with zone of inhibition ranging from 7 to 14 mm as compared to standard ciprofloxacin (zone of inhibition of 50 mm). In the study for thrombolytic property, different extracts of S. fruticosum revealed varying degrees of thrombolytic activity ranging from 33.46% to 62.51%. This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidant activity in terms of free radical scavenging capacity and membrane stabilizing ability of methanol extract of bark of Sonneratia apetala. The total phenol content of the extract was measured by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The antioxidant potential was investigated using 2,2 diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH), reducing power assay and chelating power determination. The membrane stabilizing capacity was assessed by monitoring the hypotonic solution - and heat-induced haemolysis of human erythrocytes. The total phenolic content was found 50.75 mg/gm of gallic acid equivalent. The extract exhibited significant antioxidant activity in DPPH free radical scavenging assay with IC50 value of 81.42 µg/ml as compared to the standard, BHT (IC50=42.56 µg/ml), Fe2+ ion reducing power assay and chelating power ability. In case of assay for chelating ability, EDTA represented 98.76% chelation while the plant extract showed 82.83% at concentration of 100 ?g/ml. In addition, the methanol extract of bark of this plant was found to moderately inhibit the haemolysis of human erythrocyte. In conclusion, the methanol extract of S. apetala could be valuable candidate for future development for antioxidant activity.Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Journal 19(2): 147-151, 2016

The present study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiarrheal and analgesic activities of methanol extract of Diospyros malabarica (Desr.) Kostel buds growing in Bangladesh. The total phenolic content of methanol extract of D. malabarica and its Kupchan fractions was determined and expressed in gallic acid equivalent (GAE). In the DPPH free radical scavenging assay, the aqueous soluble fraction of the methanol extract of D. malabarica revealed maximum free radical scavenging activity having IC50 value of 6.17 μg/ml. In antimicrobial assay, all the test samples displayed prominent antimicrobial activity against the test organisms under in vitro conditions. Among these, the carbon tetrachloride soluble fraction was found to exhibit the highest activity against Bacillus cereus, Salmonella Typhi, Salmonella Paratyphi, and Candida albicans with the zone of inhibition as 32, 30, 28 and 30 mm, respectively. In evaluation of antidiarrheal activity, the D. malabarica extracts showed significant anti-diarrheal potential in a dose dependent manner. During the evaluation of analgesic activity by radiant heat tail-flick method, the plant extract at 400 mg/kg b.w. exhibited highest elongation (373.04%) as compared to morphine (472.48%). On the other hand, in acetic acid-induced writhing test, the extract at 200- and 400-mg/kg b.w. showed 61.11 and 66.67% inhibition of writhing in mice model, respectively as compared to 68.06% inhibition produced by the standard diclofenac-Na. The findings of this study justify some of the traditional uses of D. malabarica and reveal the bioactivity of the plants.  Objective: The aim of this study was to explicate antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activities of Leucas aspera flowers.Methods: Antibacterial activity was done by agar diffusion method. The ethyl acetate extract of L. aspera flower was evaluated against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Antifungal activity was also done by agar diffusion method. The agar used for antifungal activity was Czapek Dox Agar. Nitric oxide scavenging assay and free radical scavenging assay were used for the antioxidant activity. Griess reagent was used in nitric oxide scavenging assay. 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl was used in free radical scavenging assay.Results: L. aspera flower extract showed good antibacterial activity with the highest zone of inhibition against Vibrio cholera with 23 mm followed by Bacillus polymyxa showing 20 mm zone of inhibition. The ethyl acetate extract of L. aspera flower showed quite a good results with the highest inhibitory activity against Aspergillus niger with 13 mm zone of inhibition and lowest for Trichoderma viridae with 5 mm zone of inhibition. Antioxidant activity of L. aspera flower extract was done by free radical scavenging assay and nitric oxide scavenging assay. Nitric oxide scavenging assay showed prominent results almost performed equal to standard compound Butylated hydroxyl anisole (BHA) The values for 10 μl of L. aspera extract was 50.27, for the standard (BHA) showed 50.81. L. aspera extract values for 50 μl was 69.73 and for BHA, the values was 77.30. For 100 μl, the extract gave 82.70, and for standard BHA, the reading was 89.73.Conclusion: The results showed that L. aspera flower has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity ranging from 23 to 13 mm zone of inhibition. L. aspera flower has strong antioxidative power on nitric oxide radicals. The medicinal properties of plant species have made an outstanding contribution to the origin and evolution of many traditional herbal therapies.

The methanol extracts of bark and leaves of Chukrasia tabularis and their organic and aqueous soluble materials were subjected to screenings for antioxidant, cytotoxic, thrombolytic, membrane stabilizing, antimicrobial, analgesic and antidiarrhoel activities. In the DPPH free radical scavenging assay, the methanolic extract of bark of C. tabularis and the aqueous soluble fraction of methanol extract of leaves of C. tabularis revealed the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 values of 2.95 ?g/ml and 5.31 ?g/ml, respectively. The pet ether soluble fraction of methanolic extract of leaves and bark of C. tabularis displayed the highest cytotoxic potential having LC50 values 0.0167 ?g/ml and 3.89 ?g/ml, as compared to standard vincristine sulphate (LC50 value of 0.45 ?g/ml). During thrombolytic assay, the aqueous soluble fraction of leaves and carbon tetrachloride soluble fraction of bark of C. tabularis showed 34.04% and 56.37% clot lysis, respectively. In the membrane stabilizing assay, the carbontetrachloride and aqueous soluble materials of methanol extract of leaf inhibited 21.03% and 49.68% hypotonic solution- and heat-induced haemolysis of RBC, respectively. The crude extract of leaves of C. tabularis exhibited mild antibacterial activity, while that of leaves and bark revealed significant central analgesic activity at 400 mg/kg body weight. The crude extracts demonstrated significant peripheral analgesic activity at 200- and 400- mg/kg body weight. The methanol extract of bark of Neolamarckia cadamba (Roxb.) and its organic and aqueous soluble partitionates were subjected to assays for antioxidant, cytotoxic, thrombolytic, membrane stabilizing, antimicrobial and analgesic activities. In the DPPH free radical scavenging assay, the pet ether and carbon tetra chloride soluble partitionate of the methanolic extract demonstrated the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 values of 60.46 ?g/ml and 78.58 ?g/ml, respectively. On the other hand, the carbon tetrachloride and pet ether soluble fractions displayed the potential lethality to brine shrimps, having LC50 of 7.24 and 7.89 ?g/ml, as compared to standard vincristine sulphate (LC50 value of 0.45 ?g/ml). During assay for thrombolytic property, the carbon tetrachloride and aqueous soluble materials revealed 66.36 % and 64.25 % clot lysis of human blood, respectively. In the membrane stabilizing assay, the carbon tetrachloride soluble fraction inhibited 86.79 % haemolysis of human RBCs in hypotonic solution-induced condition, while the aqueous soluble partitionate inhibited 92.39 % haemolysis of RBCs in the heat-induced condition. The crude methanolic extract of bark of N. cadamba showed significant central and peripheral analgesic activity at both 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight, whereas its chloroform soluble fraction mildly inhibited the growth of test microorganisms. The study was designed to evaluate the preliminary biological activities of crude methanol extracts of the leaf of Justicia gendarussa, Sansevieria trifasciata and Hydnocarpus kurzii and their organic soluble partitionates. The polyphenol content was determined spectrophotometrically and expressed as gallic acid equivalents. The total phenolic content was found to vary for different test samples ranging from 1.45 ± 0.25 mg to 40.73 ± 0.22 mg of GAE/ gm of dried extract. The antioxidant potential was evaluated by DPPH free radical scavenging assay using butylated hydroxytolune (BHT) and ascorbic acid as standards. In the assay, the CSF of H. kurzii and the PESF of J. gendarussa revealed the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 values 3.25 ± 0.05 ?g/ml and 24.68 ± 0.26 ?g/ml, respectively. The brine shrimp lethality bioassay was utilized to evaluate the cytotoxicity. The chloroform soluble fraction (CSF) and methanol extract (ME) of J. gendarussa exhibited strong cytotoxicity with LC50 values of 0.002 ?g/ml and 0.06 ?g/ml, respectively. The membrane stabilizing activity was assessed by evaluating hemolysis of RBC in hypotonic solution and was compared with acetyl salicylic acid. On the other hand, the chloroform soluble fraction of J. gendarussa and aqueous soluble materials of S. trifasciata produced 75.60% and 75.0% inhibition of hemolysis of RBC, respectively as compared to 77.9% inhibited by acetyl salicylic acid (0.10 mg/ml). The methanol extracts of leaves of Nephelium lappaceum L., Pandanus foetidus Roxb., Ludwigia repens Rubin. and the whole plant of Adiantum philippense L. were subjected to assays of antioxidant, cytotoxic, thrombolytic and membrane stabilizing activities. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH free radical scavenging activity using butylated hydroxytolune and ascorbic acid as standards. The crude extract of N. lappaccam exhibited the highest free radical scavenging activity (IC50= 3.93±0.25?g/ml). On the other hand, the crude methanol extracts of A. philippense and P. foetidus demonstrated significant brine shrimp lethality with LC50 values 0.50±0.84 ?g/ml and 0.58±0.73 ?g/ml, respectively as compared to the standard anti-neoplastic drug, vincristine sulfate (LC50= 0.45 ?g/ml). Weak thrombolytic activity was observed for the test samples. The crude methanol extracts of P. foetidus and N. lappaceum showed 17.31±0.82 % and 17.29±0.91 % clot lysis while standard streptokinase and water, used as positive and negative controls, demonstrated 66.77 % and 3.79 % lysis of clot, respectively. The methanol extract of whole plant of A. philippense inhibited hypotonic solution and heat induced haemolysis of RBCs by 53.09±1.01 % and 35.36±1.60 % as compared to 71.77 % and 42.20 % by acetyl salicylic acid, respectively.
