An experiment was done at farmer's field in Sherpur district to evaluate the comparative performance of two hybrid rice varieties, Sonarbangla-2 and Sonarbangla-3 with three conventional modern commercial varieties BRRIdhan32, BRRIdhan33 and BR11 in Transplanted aman season of 2003. It is revealed that the hybrids and conventional rice varieties differed significantly among themselves with respect to different parameters under study. The highest grain yield (6.20t/ha) was recorded from the hybrid Sonarbangla-3 followed BRRIdhan-32 (5.70 t/ha) and the lowest in BRRIdhan-33 (4.17t/ha) and these differences were statistically significant. However, BRRIdhan-32 obtained significantly higher yield compared to the hybrid Sonarbangla-2. Further, it produced the maximum amount of straw (8.6 t/ha), which varied significantly with all others. Minimum days to 1st flowering (92) and maturity (108) were noticed in Sonarbangla-2 followed by Sonarbangla-3 (95 and 115), respectively. Both the hybrid had heavier grain weight (28.33-31.00g) than those of the conventional varieties (22-25g). It is noted that the hybrids maintained distinct statistical edge over the conventional varieties with regard to most of the parameters. Thus, the hybrid Sonarbangla-3 was found superior to conventional varieties for transplanting in the aman season in Bangladesh. Five phosphorus rates (0, 5, 10, 20 and 30 kg P/ha) were tested with four rice genotypes in Boro (BRRI dhan36, BRRI dhan45, EH1 and EH2) and T. Aman (BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan49, EH1 and EH2) season. Phosphorus rates did not influence grain yield irrespective of varieties in T. Aman season while in Boro season P response was observed among the P rates. Application of P @ 10 kg/ha significantly increased the grain yield. But when P was applied @ 20 and 30 kg P/ha, the grain yield difference was not significant. The optimum and economic rate of P for T. Aman was 20 kg P/ha but in Boro rice the optimum and economic doses of P were 22 and 30 kg/ha, respectively. Hybrid entries (EH1 and EH2) used P more efficiently than inbred varieties. A negative P balance was observed up to 10 kg P/ha. An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from July to December 2004 to evaluate the effect of hill spacing on the performance of BRRI dhan40 and BRRI dhan41 as Transplant aman crop. The experiment consisted of five hill spacings viz., 5cm. 10cm, 15 cm, and 25 cm where row to row spacing of 25 cm was kept constant for all treatments. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications. The 25 cm x 5 cm hill spacing produced the tallest plant, highest total number of tillers/hill, bearing tillers/hill lowest number of non-hearing tillers/hill, grain yield and harvest index, while 25 cm x 5 cm hill spacing produced the highest number of sterile spikelets/panicle, straw yield and biological yield. BRRI dhan41 produced higher grain yield (4.7 t/ha) which was the contribution of higher number of grains/panicle and heavier grain weight. SUMMARYRice varieties were compared for their response to infestation by the stalk-eyed fly, Diopsis thoracica (West), both when a choice of varieties was available to the pest and when there was no choice. The fly significantly decreased the number of panicles produced (both total and mature), the percentage of tillers with panicles, grain weight and total yield of unprotected plants, and increased the number of immature panicles and time to 50% flowering. Reductions in grain yield of between 2 and 97% were recorded but these losses were unrelated to the percentage of damaged tillers. Production of new tillers did not fully compensate for damaged ones in most varieties. However, photoperiod-sensitive rice varieties were better able to compen- sate for pest damage than most.

An experiment was conducted using nine hybrid rice genotypes along with two inbred standard check varieties in five different locations of Bangladesh to assess their stability in terms of grain yield and maturity in diverse environments. For this, adaptability, stability, genotype × environment (G×E) interaction effect for grain yield and maturity of 11 rice varieties in five agro ecological zones in Bangladesh were assessed during T. Aman season of 2015. The analysis of variance for growth duration and grain yield (t/ha) for genotypes, environment and genotype-environment interaction were highly significant at 1% level of probability indicating the variable response of genotypes and environments. The hybrid genotypes IR79156A/BRRI20R, BRRI hybrid dhan3, BRRI33R/BRRI26R, BRRI hybrid dhan4, standard check variety BRRI dhan49 and BR11 had high yield performance and widely adapted to all environments and these were non sensitive to environmental interactive forces, while the hybrids BRRI7A/BRRI31R, IR79156A/BasmatiR and SL-8 were sensitive to environmental interaction. Environment such as Gazipur (E1) and Faridpur (E3) having positive IPCA1 score and positive interaction with the hybrids BRRI7A/BRRI13R, SL-8H and IR79156A/BasmatiR were considered as the favourable environments for these hybrids.Bangladesh J. Twenty eight rice genotypes were evaluated for their stability in respect of grain yield and growth duration during boro season of 2007-08 over five locations viz. Gazipur, Jamalpur, Comilla, Jinaidhah, and Rajshahi. Variances for genotypes, locations, and G × E interactions were significant for both the traits. Linear components of G × E interactions were insignificant but non- linear components (pooled deviation) were significant. Considering stability parameters (bi and S2 di) for days to maturity, genotypes Raja, Ropa-1, and Sera were least responsive to environment (bi =1) and minimum deviation from regression (S2 di = 0) were stable over the locations. The estimates of stability parameters for grain yield revealed that the genotypes Ropa-1, SL-8, Lily and Sera were higher grain yielder, b value were close to the unity and S2di value were near to the zero. So, these four genotypes could be considered as the most stable over the environments. Considering both growth duration and grain yield based on stability parameters, the genotypes Ropa and Sera were identified as most stable and could be recommended for release as varieties.   Key words: Hybrid rice; stability; exotic. Hybrid rice varieties have higher yield potential over inbred varieties. This improvement is not always translated to the grain yield and its physiological causes are still unclear. In order to clarify it, two field experiments were conducted including two popular indica hybrids (BRRI hybrid dhan2 and Heera2) and one elite inbred (BRRI dhan45) rice varieties. Leaf area index, chlorophyll status, and photosynthetic rate of flag leaf, postheading crop growth rate, shoot reserve translocation, source-sink relation and yield, and its attributes of each variety were comprehensively analyzed. Both hybrid varieties outyielded the inbred. However, the hybrids and inbred varieties exhibited statistically identical yield in late planting. Both hybrids accumulated higher amount of biomass before heading and exhibited greater remobilization of assimilates to the grain in early plantings compared to the inbred variety. Filled grain (%) declined significantly at delayed planting in the hybrids compared to elite inbred due to increased temperature impaired-inefficient transport of assimilates. Flag leaf photosynthesis parameters were higher in the hybrid varieties than those of the inbred variety. Results suggest that greater remobilization of shoot reserves to the grain rendered higher yield of hybrid rice varieties.

Many studies have been carried out on N sources effect on fragrant rice; however, their impact on rice grain quality is largely unclear. In this study, we evaluated the effects of different types of N sources on rice growth, yield, 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2AP), amylose and cooked rice elongation. Two indica rice cultivars, Basmati 385 (B385), Xiangyaxiangzhan (XYXZ) and two japonica cultivars, Yunjingyou (YJY), Daohuaxiang (DHX) were grown in experimental pots with six replications under four N sources: Potassium nitrate (KNO3), ammonium bicarbonate (NH4HCO3), urea (H2NCONH2) and sodium nitrate (NaNO3) in 2019 and 2020 early seasons. Our results showed that N dynamics regulated the number of panicles, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, amylose and cooked rice elongation across all the four treatments. The NH4HCO3 treatment significantly increased the number of panicles and grain yield across the four rice varieties compared with KNO3, H2NCONH2 and NaNO3 N sources in both 2019 and 2020 early season, The KNO3 treatment significantly showed higher 1000-grain weight in B-385, YJY, XYXZ and DHX compared to other N sources. Compared with other N sources treatment, the NH4HCO3 treatments significantly increased the 2AP contents in heading stage leaves, matured leaves and grains of B-385, YJY, XYXZ and DHX respectively. Cooked rice elongation percentage also showed significant difference in all treatments studied with KNO3 recorded the highest across the four varieties. Analysis of major enzymes and compounds such as P5C, P5CS, PDH, Pyrroline, proline and Methylglyoxal showed remarkable differences in each cultivar at heading and maturity stages with higher activity in NH4HCO3 and H2NCONH2 treatments. Similarly, in all treatments, we also observed significant increase in amylose content percentage, with NH4HCO3 having greater percentage of amylose.

Management of applied nitrogen in rice field is one tool that could lead to increase in rice yield, but often ignored by most farmers. The experiment was carried out from April to July 2015 at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Dumki, Patuakhali to find out the influence of different nitrogen management and variety on the yield performance of transplant Ausrice. The study consisted of four levels of nitrogen viz. Control (without N), 30 kg N ha-1, 60 kg N ha-1 and urea super granule @ 52 kg N ha-1 and four Transplanted aus rice varieties viz. KaliHitta, ChaitaBoro, Abdul Hai and Gota IRRI, and was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. The levels of nitrogen were assigned in the main plot and varieties were allocated in the sub-plots. Nitrogen management, variety and their interactions exerted significant (P ≤ 0.05) influence on plant characters, yield contributing characters and yield of transplanted Aus rice. In the case of nitrogen management, the tallest plant was 161.60 cm, maximum leaf area index(2.97, the highest number of effective tillers hill-115, longest panicle 24.30 cm with the maximum number of filled grains as94.73, 1000-grain weight gave 29.97 g. Grain yield of 2.48 t ha-1 were obtained from USG @ 52 kg N ha-1 and the shortest plant height of 136.90 cm with lowest leaf area index of 1.78, lowest number of effective tillers hill-1 (8.43), shortest panicle (18.84 cm) with the lowest numbers of filled grains panicle-1 (53.18), 1000-grain weight (24.33 g) and grain yield (1.40 t ha-1) were obtained in control (N1=O, kg N ha-1). Among the varieties, ChaitaBoro gave the tallest plant height (151.60 cm) and maximum leaf area index (2.54). While the highest number of effective tillers hill-1 (12.20), longest panicle (22.42 cm) with the maximum number of filled grains panicle-1 (73.50), highest 1000-grain weight (27.41 g) and highest grain yield (2.39 t ha-1) were recorded from Gota IRRI than other varieties. In case of interaction, Gota IRRI Fertilized with USG at 52 kg N ha-1 produced the highest number of effective tillers hill-1 (16.87), panicle length (25.13 cm), number of grains panicle-1 (105.70) and grain yield (3.13 t ha-1). The lowest number of effective tillers hill-1 (8.13), lowest panicle length (17.47 cm) with minimum numbers of filled grains 47.67) and grain yield (1.12 t ha-1) were produced by the interaction of control (N1=O, kg N ha-1) and Kali Hitta. So, cultivation of transplant Aus rice (Gota IRRI) appeared to be the best performance with USG @ 52 kg N ha-1 and recommended to the end users.
