The research study was conducted on the market fruits from selected local markets of Mymensingh, Bangladesh. The objectives of the study were to assess the microbiological quality of market fruits, hand washing and used water of hotels and chatpoti shops and to predict the comparative public health implication associated with the socioeconomic status of the inhabitants consuming the fruits and water. In fruit samples, the total viable count ranged from log 2.90 to log 6.4. No coliform bacteria were detected in fruit samples. Statistical analysis showed significant variations in microbial load in different fruits, hand washings and used water. Present study further demonstrated that there was lack of proper hygienic and sanitation measures in most of the markets, especially in town markets. Because of observed low sanitary quality, the urban market fruits should be handled and used with special attention to reduce the risk of contamination with potential pathogenic bacteria. The aim of the present study was to determine the microbial quality of freshly drawn cow’s milk belonging to the arsenic affected and non-affected areas. In the present work 25 milk sample were collected from five different arsenic affected and non-affected areas. The analysis comprised enumeration of total viable count (TVC), total coliform count (TCC) and total staphylococcal count (TSC) for the determination of sanitary quality. The highest total viable count, total coliform count and total staphylococcus count were log 5.894 ± 0.221, log 2.832± 0.129 and log 2.898 ± 0.162 respectively. Staphylococcus spp, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas spp and Bacillus spp were isolated from the milk samples. Among them Escherichia coli were isolated from the maximum milk samples. It is found that the level of microbial quality in terms of TVC, TCC and TSC were high in arsenic affected areas than arsenic non-affected area. It also found that TVC and TCC were positively correlated with each other. This survey indicates that most of the raw milk samples were not satisfactory in course of public health standard as some pathogenic bacteria were detected from these samples and it is necessary to improve the hygienic practices required for the handling and processing of milk.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjvm.v12i2.21297 Bangl. The study was carried out to assess the microbiological quality of smoked Trachurus trachurus and Scomber scumbrus in four markets in Orlu Local Government Area, South East, Nigeria. Forty freshly smoked samples of Trachurus trachurus and Scomber scumbrus were procured from Eke Eziachi, Orlu Main, Aforaja Umuowa and Afor Ogidi Ihioma markets and analyzed using standard techniques. Results revealed that Orlu main market had the highest level of microbial contamination (mean bacteria and fungi count of 5 x 102 and 10 x 102cfu/g respectively). The highest total viable count (7 x102 cfu/g) of Scomber scumbrus was obtained in Aforaja Umuowa market while the least value of 2 x102 cfu/g was observed in Afor Ogidi Ihioma market. Also, similar value was recorded in Trachurus trachurus at Aforaja Umuowa market. Results from the study indicated that pathogens present in fish samples included bacteria (Bacillus cereus, B. subtilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp and Staphylococcus aureus) and fungi (Gliocladium spp., Candida spp., Rhizopus spp., Alternaria spp., Aspergillus spp., Clasdosprium spp., Fonsecaca spp., Chrysoporius spp., mucour spp. and Botrytis spp). The study also showed that freshly smoked Trachurus trachurus and Scomber scumbrus samples sold in the four markets under assessment were contaminated with pathogenic organisms. To standardize the assessment of the hygienic quality of beef carcasses in Northern Ireland (NI) abattoirs, swabbing techniques were evaluated. Six materials, including two commercially produced swabs, were compared for their ability to recover spoilage and pathogenic bacteria and for their ease of use as carcass swabs. A sponge retailed for domestic use was selected on the basis of efficiency of recovery of microorganisms, ease of use, and cost. On sample carcasses, 1,000 cm2 of the brisket was swabbed, since this site is normally readily contaminated. For 9 months, 420 carcasses in seven of the nine European Union–approved abattoirs in NI were sampled while in the chiller (24 to 48 h after kill). Total viable count (TVC), yeasts and molds, and Enterobacteriaceae were enumerated after incubation at 22 (48 h) and 37°C (48 h), and the results were expressed as log CFU/cm2. The mean TVC results at 22 and 37°C were 2.80 ± 0.70 and 2.75 ± 0.64, respectively. Although 63% of samples had yeasts that grew at 22°C, only 35% were positive at 37°C. The respective mean yeast counts were 1.12 ± 0.59 and 0.46 ± 0.51. Enterobacteriaceae were present in 15% of samples at 22°C and 21% of samples at 37°C. The mean counts for positive samples were 0.41 ± 0.37 and 0.40 ± 0.30, respectively. Molds were found in less than 4% of samples. Given that the brisket is normally one of the most heavily contaminated parts of the carcass, these results suggest that good hygienic practices are in operation in NI abattoirs. The results also enabled the abattoirs with the cleanest carcasses to be identified, hence permitting best practices to be found.

Out of 100 raw milk samples collected from one hundred cows infected with mastitis, thirty three isolates of different types of pathogenic bacteria were isolated using different types of selective media.  On the basis of traditional bacteriological tests, these isolates were identified as the following: 13 isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, 9 isolates of B-haemolytic Streptococci, 6 isolates of Coliform bacteria, 4 isolates of Corynebacterium pyogenes, and only one isolate Bacillus cereus.  In addition to these isolates, a number of non-pathogenic bacteria were recovered during the isolation and they were considered as contaminants of milk such as S. epidermidis, C. bovis and B. subtilus.  The total number of living bacteria present in milk samples was measured and it was ranged from (1400 to 1800) bact./ml.  The isolates of pathogenic bacteria were tested for their sensitivity to different types of antibiotics and the results were: 100% of these isolates were sensitive to Gentamycin and Tetracycline, 11 (84.6%) isolates of S. aureus, 6(66.2%) isolates of B-hacmolytic Streptococci , 4(66.2%) isolates of Coliform bacteria and 3(75%)  es of C. pyogenes were sensitive to Ampicillin, Penicillin, Erythromycin and Cepholexin. While Bacillus cereus isolate was resistant to all these antibiotics.  As a result of this work, generally the bacteriological quality of this milk is acceptable due to the low number of viable count of bacteria in   milk and the isolates showed high level of sensitivity to the antibiotics used in this study.

A study was carried out to investigate microbiological quality of ice cream available in Chittagong area of Bangladesh during June to July 2008. Each brand of ice cream was collected from retail stores of Chittagong City. Standard plate count (SPC) and coliform count were done for bacteriological assessment of the ice cream samples. The average SPC count of Kwality, Igloo and Sub Zero ice cream samples were 2 x 103, 3 x 103 and 4 x 103 cfu/g respectively. Coliform organisms were detected in all the ice cream samples and the average coliform counts of the ice cream samples from Kwality, Igloo and Sub Zero were 12, 18 and 42 cfu/g respectively. Coliform bacteria exceeded standard limits, which can cause serious health problems. A survey was conducted to evaluate the microbiological quality of sliced, vacuumpacked, surimi-based imitation crab at the retail level, during a 3-month storage period. The roll shaped product imported from France, was sliced and packed in a fishery processing plant in the region of Thessaloniki. Twenty five samples were examined each month, and a total of 75 samples were examined during the three month storage period of the product. Psychrotropic, lactic acid and coliform bacteria, Escherichia coli I, yeasts, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella spp., Listeria spp. and Escherichia coli Θ157:Η7, were used as microbial indices, to evaluate the microbiological quality of the product. The following conclusions were derived from the evaluation of the results of the microbiological examinations. 1) The microbiological condition of the crab meat analogs examined on the 15th day of storage, was found satisfactory, since microbial populations were very low, while pathogenic bacteria were not detected in any of the examined samples. 2) The overall microbiological quality of the samples examined at the end of the second month of storage, was also good, since psychrotrophic and lactic acid bacteria exceeded 1Θ7 log cfu/g only in one sample), while coliform bacteria were not detected in 60% of the samples and Escherichia coli I was detected only in one sample. The mean value of the yeasts was 2.84 log cfu/g, while molds were not detected in any of samples examined. 3) The microbiological quality of the samples examined at the end of the three months storage period was not satisfactory, since the microbial indices in the majority of the samples (80%), were rather high. S. aureus, Salmonella spp, Listeria s pp. and E. coli 0157:H7 were not detected in any sample, during the three month storage period.

The purpose of this study was to examine the microbiological quality and consumer safety of frozen black mussels purchased from four different markets (A, B, C, D) in the İzmir Province of Turkey. A total of 36 frozen black mussel packages, which contained approximately 50 mussels in each, were purchased from the markets. They were not only examined for total mesophilic, psychrotrophic, coliform and fecal coliform bacteria count but also investigated for pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes and Vibrio spp. According to the results of the mesophilic bacteria counts, frozen black mussels did not exceed the microbiological limits set for safe consumption. The findings showed that frozen black mussels purchased from (A, B, C, D) of markets were safe for human consumption because pathogenic bacteria species such as E.coli, Salmonella spp., S. aureus, L. monocytogenes and Vibrio spp. were not present in the frozen mussel samples.

The study was conducted to examine microbiological quality of raw salad vegetables of Jessore city of Bangladesh. Fourteen samples of two types of vegetables which are commonly used for salad eg. Tomato (<i>Lycopersicum esculentum</i>) and Cucumber (<i>Cucumis sativus</i>) were collected from different local markets of Jessore City and their bacteriological attributes were investigated using routine methods. All the vegetables were highly contaminated with coliforms and fecal coliforms. Range of Total Viable Count were 11x106 CFU/g to 20x107 CFU/g for tomato and 12x105 CFU/g to 24x107 CFU/g for cucumber, Total Coliform Count were 11x104 CFU/g to 2 x106 CFU/g for tomato and 10.2x103 CFU/g to 60x104 CFU/g for cucumber and Total Staphyllococcal Count were 11x104 CFU/g to 25x106 CFU/g for tomato and 10x104 CFU/g to 50x106 CFU/g for cucumber. Total coliforms were identified as <i>Escherichia coli<i>, <i>Klebsiella<i> spp., <i>Enterobacter<i> spp., <i>Citrobacter<i> spp. and <i>Shigella<i> spp. Antibiogram was conducted with twelve different antibiotics for some randomly selected pure colonies of <i>Klebsiella<i> spp. Multidrug resistance was observed in 90% isolates with resistance from two to six antibiotics. Hygienic practices should be followed in handling the vegetables in local markets and vegetables might have an important role as a source of antibiotic resistant bacteria.The Agriculturists 2015; 13(1) 9-17

Water is the main source for life and also the most severe substance caused by pollution. The mandatory parameters for determining microbiological quality of drinking water are total non-fecal Coliform bacteria and Coliform fecal (Escherichia coli). Coliform bacteria are a group of microorganisms commonly used as indicators, where these bacteria can be a signal to determine whether a water source has been contaminated by bacteria or not, while fecal Coliform bacteria are indicator bacteria polluting pathogenic bacteria originating from human feces and warm-blooded animals (mammals) . The water inspection method in this study uses the MPN (Most Probable Number) method which consists of 3 tests, namely, the presumption test, the affirmation test, and the reinforcement test. The results showed that of 15 drinking water samples 8 samples were tested positive for Coliform bacteria with the highest total bacterial value of sample number 1, 15 (210/100 ml), while 7 other samples were negative. From 8 positive Coliform samples only 1 sample was stated to be negative fecal Coliform bacteria and 7 other samples were positive for Coliform fecal bacteria with the highest total bacterial value of sample number 1 (210/100 ml).
