External cervical resorption (ECR) has an inflammatory nature and the proximity to the gingival sulcus favors contamination and progression of the lesion. Change in crown color, inflammation of the marginal gingiva or even the presence of secretion in the gingival sulcus are the main clinical signs. Being an asymptomatic lesion, it can be neglected and its progression can jeopardize the tooth involved. This report describes the treatment of a patient who presented two teeth with ECR. On clinical examination, the crown of tooth 17 showed a pinkish translucency on the occlusal surface. On tooth 12, this spot was dark and located in the cervical third of the labial surface of the crown. Both the teeth were asymptomatic, and the radiographic examination showed an image comparable with root resorption in the cervical third of the crown.  On tooth 17, the middle and cervical third of the crown was compromised and the pulp vitality test was negative. The treatment for the case was extraction. A tomographic examination of tooth 12 demonstrated pulpal involvement and biologic width violation. The vitality test was positive. After endodontic treatment, the tooth was extruded by 4 mm, the resorbed area was exposed and restored with composite resin. A 39-month clinical and radiographic control showed integrity of the root surface and the periodontium. It was found that early diagnosis influences the prognosis of treatment considering the speed of progression of resorption. It emphasizes the importance of clinical and radiographic control of the clinical conditions that predispose to ECR.

SUMMARY This article describes the case of a vital molar tooth with a vast furcal iatrogenic root perforation and biologic width violation, which was successfully managed by a multidisciplinary approach aimed at preserving pulp vitality. The root perforation was cleaned and then sealed with mineral trioxide aggregate, which was positioned onto the pulp at the canal orifices. After one month, the patient was not reporting symptoms, and the tooth was positively responding to the thermal test. The tooth was orthodontically extruded, subjected to minimally invasive crown lengthening, and prepared to receive a full-crown restoration. Radiotransparent composite resin was chosen as a permanent restorative material to better monitor possible endodontic complications at the coronal level. The patient's tooth was followed up for eight years uneventfully. The present case is an example of the possibility to subject a root-repaired tooth with fully formed apices to conservative yet complex multidisciplinary treatment while maintaining pulp vitality.

External inflammatory root resorption (EIRR) is one of the consequences of pulp necroses caused by intrusive dislocation (ID). The objective of the study was to report a clinical case of ID associated with EIRR, which was submitted to late endodontic treatment. Patient came to the dental office five months after a trauma with a clinical picture of intrusive dislocation of tooth 21 associated with pulp necrosis, but without symptoms. Radiographic examination showed an image compatible with EIRR along root surface. The treatment plan was to undergo endodontic treatment with calcium hydroxide changes which occurred monthly for 8 months. When EIRR stopped, the root canal was filled. After clinical and radiographic follow up for 5 years, there was an involution of the damage caused by the clastic activity resulting from the resorptive process, characterizing the success of the instituted therapy.

Differently from alpha- and betaherpesviruses affecting swine, interest in the recently discovered Suid gammaherpesvirus 3, Suid gammaherpesvirus 4, and Suid gammaherpesvirus 5, also known as porcine lymphotropic herpesviruses (PLHV-1, PLHV-2, and PLHV-3), has largely focused on their role as potential zoonotic agents in cases of xenotransplantation. However, their role as primary pathogens of swine or as co-factors for other lymphotropic infections has essentially been neglected. The present study aims at filling this gap, evaluating the association between PLHVs infection and different clinical conditions and/or porcine circovirus (PCV) co-infection. One hundred seventy-six samples were obtained from different animals located in a high-density pig area of Northern Italy in the period 2017–2020. The presence of PLHVs and PCVs was tested and quantified by specific real-time PCR: PLHVs were widespread among pigs (PLHV-1, PLHV-2, and PLHV-3 prevalence was 28.97%, 10.79%, and 4.54%, respectively) and detected in all considered tissues and clinical conditions. Frequent co-infections were also observed among PLHVs and with PCVs, although a significant association was not detected with the exception of a positive interaction between PLHV-1 and PLHV-3, and a negative one between PLHV-2 and PCV-2. Significantly, no association between PLHVs, alone or in co-infection, emerged with any of the considered clinical signs, their frequency being comparable between healthy and diseased animals. Based on these pieces of evidence and despite their high prevalence, PLHVs’ relevance for the swine industry appears negligible, either as primary pathogens or as predisposing factors for circovirus-induced diseases.

BACKGROUND: Symptoms and clinical signs suggestive of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) are common but may have numerous possible causes. OBJECTIVES: 1) To identify the most frequent clinical symptoms and correlate them with duplex ultrasound scan (DS) findings; 2) to identify high-risk clinical conditions for DVT; and 3) to evaluate time since the onset of symptoms and DS examination. METHODS: A total of 528 patients with a clinical suspicion of DVT were evaluated by DS performed by experienced vascular ultrasonographists. RESULTS: DVT was present in 192 (36.4%) of the patients. The external iliac vein was involved in 53 patients (10.04%), the femoral veins in 110 (20.83%), the popliteal vein in 124 (23.48%), and veins below the knee were involved in 157 (29.73%) of the cases. Limb swelling was present in 359 cases (68%), and 303 (57.4%) complained of pain. Sixty nine patients received a DS due to suspected or proven pulmonary embolism (PE); 79 patients were in postoperative period. In the multivariate analysis, independent risk factors for DVT included age>65 years (OR=1.49; 95% confidence interval [95%CI] 1.01-2.18; p=0.042), edema (OR=2.83; 95%CI 1.72-4.65; p<0.001), pain (OR=1.99; 95%CI 1.3-3.05; p=0.002), cancer (OR=2.32; 95%CI 1.45-3.72; p<0.001), and PE (OR=2.62; 95%CI 1.29-5.32; p=0.008).Time since the onset of symptoms did not differ between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: In the present study, 36.4% of the patients referred to DS had DVT. Age > 65 years, presence of limb swelling, pain, cancer, and suspected or proven PE should be considered as major risk factors for DVT.

A 2-year-old Maltese was presented with wobbly gait of the pelvic limbs. Based on imaging examinations, a diagnosis of congenital malformation at T5–T8 and severe kyphosis causing spinal cord compression at T6–T7 was made. Dorsal laminectomy and stabilization of T6 and T7 vertebrae were performed. As the size of the vertebrae was small and they were severely deformed, novel custom-made titanium implants were used for spinal stabilization. Clinical signs were resolved 2 weeks after surgery. Although radiographic examination 373 days after surgery showed slight loosening of implants, post-operative course remained uneventful. This report describes the use of novel custom-made titanium implants for spinal fixation surgery in a dog.

Abstract Background A traumatic bone cyst is an uncommon nonneoplastic lesion of the jaws that is considered as a “pseudocyst” because of the lack of an epithelial lining. This lesion is particularly asymptomatic and therefore is diagnosed by routine dental radiographic examination as a unilocular radiolucency with scalloped borders, mainly in the posterior mandibular region. The exact etiopathogenesis of the lesion remains uncertain, though it is often associated with trauma. Case presentation We report three Persian cases of traumatic bone cyst with different clinical and radiographic features, and we present a review of the literature to further discuss diagnostic and treatment challenges. Only one of the three patients reported a history of trauma, and despite the usual signs and symptoms of the lesion, extension of the defect to the ramus, swelling of the lingual cortex, and their unusual presence in the anterior mandible were noted in these patients. Conclusions Because features of this cyst can be varied, careful history taking and radiographic evaluation alongside the clinical signs and symptoms have a very significant role in definitive diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and accurate assessment of prognosis.

SummaryThe efficiency of conservative treatment, excision arthroplasty of the femoral head and neck and triple pelvic osteotomy for the treatment of hip dysplasia in the immature dog were compared using locomotor, physical and radiographic examinations and owner’s evaluation. Cases selected for this study were dogs diagnosed with bilateral hip dysplasia, initially admitted with clinical signs (lameness, pain), immature at the beginning of the treatment (less than 12 months of age), with both hips subjected to the same treatment (conservative treatment, excision arthroplasty of the femoral head and neck or triple pelvic osteotomy). These dogs never showed any musculoskeletal problems other than hip dysplasia and the surgical treatment had been completed at least 20 months prior to re-evaluation time. Fourteen hips were re-evaluated in the conservative group, 16 in the triple pelvic osteotomy group and ten in the excision arthroplasty group. Locomotor, physical and owner’s evaluations demonstrated the superiority of the triple pelvic osteotomy. These evaluations also showed that excision arthroplasty was more efficient than conservative treatment. Radiographic examination demonstrated the obvious superiority of the triple pelvic osteotomy over conservative treatment.Locomotor, physical and owner’s evaluations demonstrated the superiority of the triple pelvic osteotomy over conservative treatment and excision arthroplasty for the treatment of hip dysplasia in the immature dog. Radiographic examination demonstrated the obvious superiority of the triple pelvic osteotomy over conservative treatment for joint congruence and control of degenerative joint disease.

Abstract Thrombocytosis refers to the increase in number of platelets per microliter (µL) of blood. Platelet counts greater than 1,000,000/µL may be associated with clinical signs of bleeding or thrombosis. Previous studies on underlying causes of thrombocytosis have aroused the interest of researchers about its clinical importance in dogs. The objective of this study was to analyze the blood cell counts in dogs in order to define the main diseases or clinical conditions that were associated with thrombocytosis, from 2016 to 2017. This was done to determine the incidence of thrombocytosis, and categorize the increase in platelet count with respect to severity. Of the 12,676 blood samples analyzed, 4.5% presented thrombocytosis (n = 573). Similar mean platelet counts were observed in all diagnosis or different categories of clinical conditions (neoplasms; gastrointestinal, endocrine, and ophthalmological diseases; trauma and surgery; dermatological, cardiac, neurological, infectious, respiratory, genitourinary, idiopathic, and multiple diseases; and pregnancy) with no significant difference (P ≥ 0.05). The disorders most commonly associated with thrombocytosis were gastrointestinal diseases, followed by neoplasms. Furthermore, increased platelet counts were observed in dogs treated with glucocorticoids and vincristine drugs. As for the degree of severity, extreme thrombocytosis occurred more frequently in the presence of gastrointestinal diseases.
