The ossifying fibroma (OF) is characterized as a benign neoplasm originated from the mesenchymal periodontal membrane, being composed of different amounts of mineralized material and fibrocellular stroma, leading to a mixed aspect. More commonly found as solitary lesions, the OF can be multiple in rare cases, normally associated with hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor syndrome (HPT-JT). The aim of this study is to report a case of bilateral OF in the mandible with different stages of maturation, not associated with HPT-JT. This case shows a 20-year-old female patient with asymptomatic intraoral hard swelling in both sides of the mandible, presenting a slight expansion in the buccal bone cortex, near to the molars, hard to palpation. CBCT showed a unilocular, well-circumscribed hypodense image, with calcified masses only on the right side. Incisional biopsies were performed and a diagnosis of bilateral OF was reached. Due to the different stages of maturation of the lesions, two different surgical approaches were performed, curettage in the left side and surgical resection in the right side with extraction of the lower second premolar and lower first molar. These areas were restored with bone grafts and the left first molar was unresponsive to the pulp vitality test and endodontic treatment was performed. The patient is undergoing periodic clinical and radiographic follow-up, and after 12 months no signs or evidence of recurrence were observed.

External cervical resorption (ECR) has an inflammatory nature and the proximity to the gingival sulcus favors contamination and progression of the lesion. Change in crown color, inflammation of the marginal gingiva or even the presence of secretion in the gingival sulcus are the main clinical signs. Being an asymptomatic lesion, it can be neglected and its progression can jeopardize the tooth involved. This report describes the treatment of a patient who presented two teeth with ECR. On clinical examination, the crown of tooth 17 showed a pinkish translucency on the occlusal surface. On tooth 12, this spot was dark and located in the cervical third of the labial surface of the crown. Both the teeth were asymptomatic, and the radiographic examination showed an image comparable with root resorption in the cervical third of the crown. On tooth 17, the middle and cervical third of the crown was compromised and the pulp vitality test was negative. The treatment for the case was extraction. A tomographic examination of tooth 12 demonstrated pulpal involvement and biologic width violation. The vitality test was positive. After endodontic treatment, the tooth was extruded by 4 mm, the resorbed area was exposed and restored with composite resin. A 39-month clinical and radiographic control showed integrity of the root surface and the periodontium. It was found that early diagnosis influences the prognosis of treatment considering the speed of progression of resorption. It emphasizes the importance of clinical and radiographic control of the clinical conditions that predispose to ECR.

Background. Autogenous tooth transplantation is a reliable method for repairing missing teeth. Although it recently became a recognized and feasible treatment method in dentistry, the long-term efficacy of root canal therapy (RCT) has not been well confirmed. This study is aimed at determining whether RCT has a good effect on the success rate of teeth with complete roots in autogenous tooth transplantation. Materials and Methods. Data were collected from the Korea University Guro Hospital. Data of patients who underwent autogenous tooth transplantation within 9 years were collected. We selected 29 teeth with complete roots as the research subjects in our study. None of the patients had any systemic diseases. All cases in this study were obtained with patient permission. Results. According to the tooth vitality test, the autogenous teeth tested negative in dental pulp test and function. Nine of the 29 teeth with autogenous tooth transplantation were treated with RCT and survived throughout the observation period. However, 20 autogenous teeth were not treated with RCT, and eight of them did not survive. All statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS 20.0. The null hypothesis was rejected ( p < 0.05 ). Conclusion. For complete root teeth, the success rate after autogenous tooth transplantation after RCT is higher than that of teeth not treated with RCT.

Background: The authors and colleagues have been involved in treatment and care for the elderly with rehabilitation, Integrative Medicine (IM), art in hospitals for artworks using masking tape. Combined together, we conducted a pilot study for medical application of masking tape art-work for elderly subjects. Subjects and Methods: Subjects enrolled were 12 elderly patients with dementia regularly coming to day care center for rehabilitation (M/F 3/9, 78-100 years, 88.3±6.0 years). As methods, masking tape has been known as Washi Tape (wa=Japanese and shi=paper), which is adhesive tape easily to stick and peel off for decorative work. Protocol included i) working 2-3 times a week, ii) sticking masking tape on a rough sketch paper, iii) evaluation of several biomarkers before and after the intervention. Results: i) Artworks were performed satisfactory for each case, ii) grasping power (right) showed increasing tendency from 13.5±7.7kg to 14.8±6.8kg (p=0.11), iii) vitality test showed significantly increase (p=0.02). Discussion and Conclusion: Artworks of masking tape seem to be beneficial for improving grasping power and psychological condition. This study included other biomarkers such as Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), pinch power, language word test and Barthel index. We plan to develop further detail analyses in the future research.

Abstract Background: Jaw cyst is the most common disease of the oral and maxillofacial region. In addition to the pathogenic tooth, the roots of some teeth are often located in the cavity of the cystic capsule. Whether these involved teeth require root canal therapy and apicoectomy is still inconclusive. In the present study, we aimed to preserve the pulp activity of involved teeth in jaw cyst by improved operation. Methods: In our improved surgical method, the root canal therapy was not performed on the involved teeth, and no apical excision was performed during the operation. 63 involved teeth in 20 cases of jaw cyst treated by our department were selected between September 2015 and October 2017. The involved teeth were diagnosed by X-ray, CBCT, and a pulp vitality test before surgery. We observed the pulps' activity in the involved teeth and the efficacy of surgery for 12-36 months. Results: Electrical activity test of 63 involved teeth pulp in 20 patients with jaw cyst was normal or insensitively before operation. The involved teeth were preserved by improved surgical method. After 12-36 months’ follow-up, the pulp activity of 53 involved teeth (84.1%) were preserved, whereas 10 teeth (15.9%) showed adverse symptoms such as redness and swelling in the apical area, fistula, and pain. These symptoms resolved after postoperative root canal therapy. Chewing function was restored well. There was no recurrence and the bone cavity gradually reduced and finally disappeared, and bone density returned to normal after long term follow-up.Conclusion: Our results showed that to preserve the activity of the involved teeth for the treatment of jaw cyst by performing an improved operation method was effective.

Objectives: This study aims to assess the validity, internal consistency, implementation, and feasibility of a sequence of tests, the Vitality Test Battery, designed to measure physical fitness, at a large scale in French older adults. Methods: A total of 528 volunteers (age ≥60 years) took the battery of 10 tests: 6-min walk, trunk strength, hand grip strength, medicine ball throwing, 30-s chair stand, flexibility, balance, plate tapping, ruler drop, and dual task. Results: Internal consistency was high, with the Cronbach alpha coefficients at around 0.77, explaining 64% of the variance. The test–retest correlations (0.3–0.6) between the items were acceptable and displayed an internal consistency property. Although five components explained 65% of the variance, all the items were kept because their eigenvalues were near to 0.9. External consistency was validated by a significant decrease in fitness scores (p < 0.001) with age and body mass index.Discussion: The Vitality Test Battery is a safe, valid tool for assessing physical fitness in persons aged over 60 years.

Radicular cyst is an odontogenic cyst located at the apical or lateral side of the radix, due to chronic inflammation after pulp necrose. It contains a combination of inflammatory tissue and malassez epithelial cells which extensively proliferates. Treatment options for radicular cyst are conventionally followed by surgical endodontic. The aim of study was to treat maxillary incisisor with necrotic pulp and radicular cyst. A female 35-year-old patient came to Gadjah Mada University Dental Hospital. She felt inconvenience with her broken central incisive restoration. Past dental history revealed that there was composite resin restoration that had been filled since 10 years ago and asymptomatic. Tooth vitality test shows negative results. Clinical examination showed negative results to percussion test and palpation, slight mobility was detected. Periapical radiograf showed a radiolucent area with radiopaque border around the apical teeth with diameter approximately 2.5 mm. The treatment began with step-back technique root canal treatment and lateral condensation technique obturation. Apicoectomy and enucleation were performed 4 weeks after root canal treatment. One week post-treatment control showed there was no pain detected and normal healing process happened. Conclusion: Apicoectomy and enucleation are treatment of choice for the management radicular cyst to restore tooth function.
