Several studies have been demonstrating to a relationship between unsaturated fatty acids, improvement of pancreatic function and insulin secretion. In this context, this review presents the most recent findings on the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus, the action mechanism of unsaturated fatty acids on pancreatic function, and clinical studies in diabetic patients. We evaluated here articles from MedLine/PubMed and the Science direct database, published between 2014 and 2020. Of the 637 results, 13 were selected. From their analysis, we could observe that mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids can improve glycemic control as well as reduce cardiovascular risk. The most recurrent antidiabetic action regarding monounsaturated fatty acids is the ability to preserve insulin signaling, whereas polyunsaturated fatty acids action consists in the increasing expression of the type 4 glucose transporter. However, a complete understanding of the relationship between fatty acids, insulin and inflammation should be considered in future investigations.

Introduction. Currently, there is no unified treatment algorithm of cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of simvastatin (SIM) and -3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (-3 PUFAs) on blood lipid profile and insulin resistance (IR) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and definite cardiac autonomic neuropathy. Materials and methods. The study involved 72 patients with T2DM and definite CAN. Patients were divided into four groups: 1st - received standard hypoglycemic therapy - control (n = 15); 2nd (n = 22) – in addition simvastatin (SIM) 20.0 mg/q.d.; 3rd (n = 18) - in addition 1 capsule/q.d. of the ω-3 PUFAs; 4th (n = 17) - in addition SIM 10.0 mg/q.d and 1 capsule/q.d of the ω-3 PUFAs for three months. The concentration of glucose, glycated hemoglobin A1c, immunoreactive insulin (IRI), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG) in the blood were determined. Homeostasis model assessment IR (HOMA-IR), atherogenic coefficient (AC), TG/LDL-C, TG/TC, TG/LDL-C and TG and glucose index (TyG) were calculated. Results. Prescription of SIM was accompanied by a statistically significant decrease in TC, LDL-C, TG concentrations. In parallel, SIM induced a decrease of AC, TG/HDL-C, increase in HDL-C, and does not affect the IRI, HOMA-IR, TG/LDL-C, TG/TC, TC/LDL-C/HDL-C, TyG. The use of ω-3 PUFAs has contributed to a significant reduction in TG, AC, TG/LDL-C, TG/TC, TG/HDL-C, TyG index, increase in HDL-C, and was not accompanied by changes in IRI content, HOMA-IR, TC, LDL-C, and TC/LDL-C/HDL-C. The combined prescription of SIM and -3 PUFAs was accompanied by more pronounced, statistically significant changes in the blood lipid spectrum, as well as a decrease in the IRI and HOMA-IR. Conclusions. Obtained results justify the appropriateness of combined simvastatin and -3 polyunsaturated fatty acids prescription to patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and definite cardiac autonomic neuropathy. Abstract Background and Aims: Diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy (DCAN) in type 2 diabetes (T2D) is among the strongest and independent risk markers for future global and cardiac mortality. Material and Methods: Thirty-six patients suffering from T2D and confirmed DCAN were enrolled in this investigation. Depending on the prescribed therapy, patients were allocated into two groups: group 1 was comprised of 15 patients to whom standard hypoglycemic treatment was prescribed (control group), the second received standard hypoglycemic treatment and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs, n = 21). The duration of the study was three month. Results: In subjects with T2D and DСAN prescription of ω-3 PUFAs was associated with a significant decrease of aorta augmentation index (AIxao), pulse wave velocity (PWV) during the active period of the day and decrease of AIxao, brachial augmentation index and PWV during the passive period of the day compared with the control group. Therefore, three month of ω-3 PUFAs supplementation to patients with confirmed DCAN and T2D promotes to improvement of arterial stiffness indices. Conclusions: In patients with T2D and СAN treatment with ω-3 PUFAs improved arterial stiffness parameters. The effectiveness of ω-3 PUFAs is not connected with optimization of glycemic control, but is rather the result of a direct drug action on the studied parameters.

ABSTRACT: The effect of boiling, microwaving and aluminium (Al) foil-baking on composition of intramuscular phospholipid fatty acids of Inra rabbit was evaluated. Results showed that, the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)(e.g. C18:2n-6, C20:4n-6, C20:5n-3, C22:5n-3 and C22:6n-3) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA)(e.g. C18:1n-7 and C18:1n-9) of treated longissimus dorsi muscle (LD) decreased, whilst the proportion of saturated (SFA)(e.g. C16:0 and C18:0) and n-6/n-3 value increased during cooking. Among the three treatments, microwaving can do better to stop the unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) being destroyed than boiling and Al foil-baking. However, boiling treatment did more serious damage to PUFA portion. Even so, the n-6/n-3 values of all of the cooked LD were within the recommended range. By analysis of partial least squares regression (PLSR), the microwaving treatment was more suitable in reserving UFA of intramuscular phospholipids from inra rabbit.
