BACKGROUND: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease is the most common inherited renal disease and affects less than 1 every 400-1,000 people. There are many effective treatments, including blood pressure management, physical activity, low sodium diet and hydration. Therapeutic education is part of a patient’s care and treatment. This approach is an essential strategy in order to face the current healthcare scenario, in which the number of people affected by chronic diseases is progressively increasing. OBJECTIVES: This article aims to analyze the effect of therapeutic education in patients with ADPKD, the level of adherence to pharmacological therapy and their compliance to dietetic and lifestyle recommendations as part of a nursing-led education. METHODS: This is a prospective, longitudinal, observational pilot study. The following measurements were used: Kidney Disease Quality of life - Short Form, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Body Uneasiness Test. At the T0 visit, a nurse selected patients and carried out a personalized educational intervention with the aims of adhering to drug therapies, monitoring blood pressure and dietary behavior (physical activity and water intake). At the T1 visit, patients performed psychological tests. At the T2 visit, the following evaluations were performed: a psychological interview together with the delivery and evaluation of the tests performed, an interview with the nurse to evaluate the adherence to the prescriptions, and a control of parameters such as physical activity, diet, water intake, drug therapy, and blood pressure. RESULTS: Therapeutic education can have a positive impact on patients’ health by improving adherence to the pharmacological therapy, diet and lifestyle. CONCLUSIONS: Therapeutic education improve the patient’s knowledge, treatments and correct behaviors as well as promotes an independent management of the disease. Through an educational intervention, the patient acquires the ability and the awareness to modify the wrong behaviors and to guarantee a balance between his needs and the pathology, thus improving the quality of life.

Systemic arterial hypertension is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and has become a common public health problem. Health education associated with educational technology may be used to encourage patients’ adherence to treatment and enable them to adequately understand how harmful hypertension can be to health, thereby promoting their quality of life. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of a strategy in an individual orientation program using educational technology associated with virtual learning environment (VLE) of hypertension care on the reduction in the white coat effect and the improvement in blood pressure control to be promoted by a nurse in a hypertension unit in a government state hospital in São Paulo. METHODS AND MATERIALS:This was a randomized clinical education study conducted with two groups, the VLE group (study group, 10 patients) and the control group (16 patients). Both groups were interviewed 6 times by nurses during the 120-day follow-up at 20-day intervals. At baseline (randomization) and at the end of the study, the patients took Spielberg’s State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Morisky test, and the WHOQOL, a quality of life instrument, and had their blood pressure taken (ambulatory blood pressure monitoring [ABPM]). Both groups had their blood pressure, weight, and abdominal circumference measured. Only the study group had remote access to the VLE. This consisted of 6 specific educational modules, each released according to the encounter number. RESULTS: At baseline, there were no statistical differences between the two groups with respect to the sociodemographic and hemodynamic variables. At the end of the study, there was a significant statistical difference between the groups on the Morisky test (p=0.001) and on the WHOQOL with respect to domain 3 social (p=0.001). There was no statistical difference with respect to the white coat effect between the groups. Nor was there any statistical difference between the groups with respect to the association of the anxiety degree measured by STAI and the white coat effect.CONCLUSION: In light of the results, our strategy improved the quality of life in the social domain and changed the adherence behavior of the study group in relation to the forgetfulness of medication schedules.

ABSTRACTObjective: Hypertension (HTN) expends a consequential public health concern on cardiovascular health status and health-care systems in India. Theeffectuation of the pharmaceutical care program in the health care is an extremely important need to achieve the optimum therapeutic effect. Theobjective of the study was to assess the impact of pharmacist intervention on patient’s blood pressure (BP) level, quality of life (QOL), and knowledge,attitude, and practice (KAP) of hypertensive patients.Methods: A randomized controlled pilot study was carried out for 6 months. The hypertensive patients were randomized into control and interventiongroup based on age, and both the groups were interviewed using KAP and WHO QOL-BREF questionnaires, screened BP, respectively, at baseline andeach follow-up after post counseling section to the intervention group. The effect of pharmacist intervention on QOL and KAP among control andintervention was statistically analyzed by paired t-test using SPSS version 16.Results: The total sample studied was 60, of which 20 (33.33%) were males and 40 (66.67%) were females. In our study, the QOL score for eachdomain of both intervention and control groups were almost poor (p˃0.05) at baseline and for the intervention group, a highly significant improvement(p<0.001) was observed for all domains in final follow-up. KAP score of intervention group also showed a significant improvement (p<0.001) frombaseline to final follow-up. In this study, intervention group showed a significant mean reduction of systolic BP from baseline 150.13±25.670 to finalfollow-up 145.33±12.914.Conclusion: The results of the study showed a significant improvement in the patient’s KAP toward different aspects of HTN and QOL followingpharmacist mediated counseling. Involvement of pharmacy practitioners in the management of HTN significantly improves QOL and KAPs.Keywords: Hypertension, Quality of life, Knowledge, Attitude and practice, Pharmacist intervention, Patient counseling.

Medication therapy management (MTM), is a service model aimed at helping general health problems by preventing morbidity and mortality. Hypertension is a non-communicable disease which is a serious health problem which requires long-term therapy.  This study aims to see the effect of MTM on clinical Outcomes and quality of life of patients in hypertensive patients. This type of research is a quasi experimental one group with a pretest-posttest design. Analysis using paired sample t-test and Wilcoxon test with a significance used P <0,05. Respondents were 70 people, 67,1% were women. The characteristics of the majority age are 55-64 years with a percentage of 51,4%, the majority of education level is high school with 42,8%, non-civil servant jobs with a percentage of 45,7%, the length of diagnosis is dominated by 1-10 years (77,1%) and comorbidities diabetes mellitus occurred the most (10,0%). The results showed that the quality of life increased from before getting MTM 54,4 ± 8,9 and after MTM intervention 60,4 ± 6,6 (P value <0,001). Clinical outcome from systolic 159,2 ± 8,9 mmHg and diastolic 103,8 ± 8,0 mmHg before MTM to 144,1 ± 14,4 mmHg for systolic and 89,7 ± 8,8 mmHg for diastolic with p value <0,001 (p <0,05) for systolic blood pressure and p value: 0,016 (p <0,05) after receiving MTM intervention. Medication Therapy Management (MTM) has a significant influence on improving the quality of life and clinical Outcomes of hypertensive patients. The higher the quality of life of patients, blood pressure becomes more controlled.

Background This proposed study aims to translate the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension with Sodium (Na) Reduction for Chinese Canadians (DASHNa-CC), a classroom-based, antihypertensive, dietary educational intervention, to an innovative smartphone app (mDASHNa-CC). This study will enable Chinese Canadian seniors to access antihypertensive dietary interventions anytime, regardless of where they are. It is hypothesized that senior Chinese Canadians will be satisfied with their experiences using the mDASHNa-CC app and that the use of this app could lead to a decrease in their blood pressure and improvement in their health-related quality of life. Objective The goal of this study is to design and test the usability and feasibility of a smartphone-based dietary educational app to support a healthy diet and hypertension control for Chinese Canadian seniors. Methods A mixed-method two-phase design will be used. The study will be conducted in a Chinese immigrant community in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Chinese Canadian seniors, who are at least 65 years old, self-identified as Chinese, living in Canada, and with elevated blood pressure, will be recruited. In Phase I, we will design and test the usability of the app using a user-centered approach. In Phase II, we will test the feasibility of the app, including implementation (primary outcomes of accrual and attrition rates, technical issues, acceptability of the app, and adherence to the intervention) and preliminary effectiveness (secondary outcomes of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, weight, waist circumference, health-related quality of life, and health service utilization), using a pilot, two-group, randomized controlled trial with a sample size of 60 participants in a Chinese Canadian community. Results The study is supported by the Startup Research Grant from Nipissing University, Canada. The research ethics application is under review by a university research ethics review board. Conclusions The study results will make several contributions to the existing literature, including illustrating the rigorous design and testing of smartphone app technology for hypertension self-management in the community, exploring an approach to incorporating traditional medicine into chronic illness management in minority communities and promoting equal access to current technology among minority immigrant senior groups. INTRODUCTION: The number of patients with chronic chronic disease (CKD) on hemodialysis (HD) has increased. In Brazil, in 2012, the number of patients in HD was 97,586, with a mortality rate of 19%. Physical exercise (PE) is an adjuvant therapy capable of promoting glycemic control, blood pressure and other gains relevant to CKD control. OBJECTIVE: To describe the benefits of quality of life, care and the most effective protocols of physical exercise for the individual on hemodialysis. METHODS: Systematic review study. Consultations of the SciELO and PubMed databases between 2005 and 2016 on the physiological effects of exercise and the quality of life of the individual on hemodialysis. The cross-over descriptors used were: "hemodialysis" and "exercises", "hemodialysis" and "exercises" and "intradialitic" and "exercises". RESULTS: 23 articles were selected with different EF programs, 8 exercises, 6 resisted, 5 composed by the association of both, and 1 of a comparison between aerobic and resisted. A sample ranged from 6 to 103 patients. Intervention time of 2 to 4 months. All programs should be improved in relation to functional capacity, reduction of inflammation, improvement of arterial compliance and others. In resisted PE, one of the studies reported deleterious effects for the patients, while those with resisted and aerobic PE showed benefits. CONCLUSION: EF was able to prevent oxidative stress, reduce blood pressure and increase blood glucose, increase muscle volume and strength, and gain quality in life, but there was no agreement on the best protocol.
