Each leader is a unique individual with unique management skills. In most cases, there is a view that the organization is a projection of the personality of the leader. Human nature is inherently complex. It is therefore not always appropriate to associate the leadership qualities of a leader with a style of leadership in exactly the same authoritarian, democratic or liberal form. In many cases, however, there are leaders in this balance. A leader - as a manager in the organization — must have the ability, talent and, of course, the psychological will to be able to react differently to different situations in the management process. Therefore, when appointing staff to management positions or analyzing the activities of management staff, there is a need to assess their personal qualities. Through such an assessment, it is possible to make decisions about the formation of the moral image of the leader in management, as well as the development of his personal qualities. Because for a person to have good professional qualities, his personal qualities must be good. The article argues that the role of the leader in the evaluation of management performance is important in the study, analysis and, if necessary, the development of conclusions. Several respondents participated in the analyses studied. The answers to the questions asked in the specially designed questionnaire were shaped by the questionnaires in them.

Service management is regarded by the author as a philosophy of management which dictates that it be largely oriented at satisfying the specific needs of an individual customer through providing a tailored value-effect service product, as well as at an organizational creation of tailored-productoffer opportunities and conditions and a linkage between the goals and benefits (profit) of the parties involved in the service-provision process (organizations, customers, other interest groups). The article deals with the issues of realization of service management principles by means of the currently much promoted and implemented HR tool as competence management. Practice demonstrates several different competence models, with the most widely employed in Russia being the 20-faceted model, it being highly adapted to the Russian specific environment. In the article, the author provides a thorough analysis of the model and proposes a 20-faceted-model-based manager competence approach, which is fully in compliance with the requirements of the new profession-knowledge- and personnel-qualification-driven quality economy. The approach as proposed by the author rests on a 24-competene model, with the competences divided into 6 groups: personal qualities; intrinsic motivation; management skills, decision-making skills; corporate knowledge management skills, interpersonal skills. The approach slows to assess and evaluate an organization’s management, as well as identify several its key levels: unacceptable for a manager, border-line case, developing management, expert management, master management.

Economic focus analysis alone cannot answer an organisation’s efficiency issues, as the soft attributes associated with management skills and leadership qualities are also important. According to transformational leadership theory (Bass–Avolio 1994, Bass 1990, Judge–Bono 2000, Bass–Bass 2008), there is a transformation between the manager and the subordinate, in which the two parties interact with and affect each other. A joint two-phase study was conducted to investigate the role of management in increasing corporate efficiency. As a first step, financial data of 1752 Hungarian manufacturing firms were analyzed. Companies were grouped according to their TFP (total factor productivity) (Juhász et al. 2020). As a second step, we linked a questionnaire survey to the preliminary TFP categorization. In our questionnaire research, we examined the individual characteristics, qualities, and specialties of leadership practices concerning the economic performance of the organizations. According to our findings, both the individual qualities of the leader and the characteristics of the leadership practice are decisive for the efficiency and results of the organization.

Leadership strategies of principals in educational institutes is considered an important factor in order to increase support and rewards. Universities in Pakistan suffer from the problems of low support and rewards, due to which most of the teachers and management staff members remain dissatisfied with their principals. This study investigated whether transformational or transactional leadership is better for providing support and rewards to teachers and management staff, along with evaluation of principles’ leadership qualities. For that, 5-point Likert scale questionnaire was utilised to assess the performance of principals by investigating 75 management and 75 teachers of 3 universities of Pakistan. Critical review approach was used for comparison between Pakistan and Australia. It was found that transformational leadership is much better as compared to transactional leadership, because it improves interaction and support, as observed in Australia. However, teachers and management staff members in Pakistan reported dissatisfaction, when asked about leadership role of their principals. They said that their principals never motivate them, support them nor reward them in contrast to leadership approaches in Australia.

Purpose Higher education institutions (HEIs) should play a fundamental role in achieving the international 2030 sustainable development (SD) agenda. Quality education is the fourth of the sustainable development goals (SDGs), and one of the targets related to this is to ensure that by 2030 all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote SD. Therefore, the SDGs provide a motive for HEIs to integrate SD concepts into their day-to-day practices. This study aims to introduce a framework for HEIs’ sustainable development assessment. Such a framework guides HEIs and educational leaders to support their countries’ commitments to achieving the SDGs. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents the results of a case study analysis of the role and successful techniques of HEIs in achieving SD in three countries, namely, Germany, Japan and Egypt. Primary data was collected by semi-structured interviews with three Cairo University officials, while secondary data was collected by reviewing the universities' official websites, reports, publications and related papers. This study introduces a novel framework for HEIs' SD analysis and assessment, which guides HEIs and educational leaders to support SD to fulfill their countries' commitments to achieving the SDGs. This framework is based on the following five categories: strategic direction and institutional working practices, supporting students, supporting university staff competencies, supporting society's stakeholders and networking and sustainable campus. Consideration is given to the potential role of HEIs to support SD in each of these areas. Findings Cairo University could learn from the novel and pioneer practices of the Leuphana University of Lüneburg, and the University of Tokyo to fill in the gaps it has in different roles. It can also put more effort into adopting the suggested higher education programs of Egypt's Vision 2030. Research limitations/implications This paper is limited to a case analysis comparing three countries, Germany, Japan and Egypt. Second, this study has not considered school education, which is equally essential in countries' SD. Practical implications HEIs can use the framework and the findings in this paper to evaluate their current roles in supporting SD, identify the gaps and take actions accordingly to address their weaknesses. Originality/value The paper compares three universities, one in each of the case study countries. It draws conclusions that identify ways in which the paper's framework and findings can guide SD practice in HEIs internationally, especially those in the developing world.
