Background: Preterm Low Birth Weight babies carry relatively higher risk of perinatal and neonatal mortality, retarded growth and development subsequently. In this study, some maternal risk factors were investigated as it seems to be important to study these factors on regional basis. Objective: To find out the maternal risk factors, clinical profile and short term outcome of pre-term low birth weight neonates by gestational age, birth weight, Occipitofrontal Circumference, length, different presentation (asphyxia, hypothermia, feeding difficulties, signs of infection) on admission and the morbidity and mortality of preterm LBW. Materials and Methods: A descriptive type of cross sectional study was done in neonatal ward of Jalalabad Ragib Rabeya Medical College Hospital, Sylhet from May, 2015 to April, 2016. Hundred cases were selected from neonatal ward and 100 controls were selected from obstetrics ward. Results: Among 100 pre-term LBW neonates, 52 were male and 48 were female. Only 22% mother took regular antenatal check up in case group and 55% in control group. Mean gestational age of neonates were 33.3±2.1 weeks. Important risk factors were primi parity (58% in cases vs 34% in control), hypertension (19% vs 5%), pre-eclampsia (26% vs 12%), prolonged rupture of membrane (33% vs 7%), APH (22% vs 0%), acute infection (8% vs 1%), multiple birth (17% vs 2%). Common clinical presentations were prematurity and LBW. Commonest morbidity was feeding problem (70%). The overall survival rate was 87%. Most common cause of death was septicemia (30%). Conclusion: all the identified risk factors were significantly higher in pre-term LBW babies than those of control. KYAMC Journal Vol. 11, No.-2, July 2020, Page 77-82

Background: Low birth weight is an alarming problem in developing countries and has severe future complications. Aim of the study: Our study aimed to compare the risk factors among mothers with low and normal birth weight babies. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 1000 mothers with normal and low birth weight babies (500 per group) over two years. Maternal parameters including age, hemoglobin levels, gravida, maternal weight gain, height, pregnancy-induced hypertension, etc., were collected along with anthropometric data of the child. We compared risk factors among the low and normal birth weight babies using the chi-square test, determining statistical significance at p<0.05, and high statistical significance at p<0.01. Results: Highly statistically significant associations were observed between low birth weight and seven variables: maternal age (p=0.0074), maternal height (p<0.0001), weight (p<0.0001), weight gain (p<0.0001), hemoglobin (p<0.0001), severe anemia (p<0.0001), and pregnancy-induced hypertension (p<0.0001). Conclusion: Our study observed significant modifiable risk factors like weight gain, weight, hemoglobin, and anemia among mothers with low birth weight babies. If we focus on raising awareness surrounding these risk factors, there may be an improvement in the birth weight of babies in this population.

The Impact

Introduction: India is a developing country, it has made advancements in every field, but stillmenstruation is a topic of social taboo in many rural and suburban parts of the country, as peoplefeel shy and difficult to discuss it openly, even mothers, sisters and teachers are not able to providecorrect information regarding menstruation physiology and its hygiene. Objective: To educateadolescent girls and assess the impact of health education on them. Methods: About 400adolescent girls aged 11-19 years from 3 government schools of Jabalpur were interviewed using apretested and predesigned questionnaire in the local language. Health education regarding hygienicpractices during menstruation was given through audiovisual aids after filling out the questionnaire.Results: out of 400 girls,291(72%) girls already knew that menstruation is a physiological processwhich increased significantly to 307(76.8%). Knowledge was poor about the source and type ofbleed; only 99 (24.8%) knew that the original was the uterus. Only 59(14.8%)girls were usingsanitary napkins. In contrast, most of them were using old cloth265(66.3%)of which 86.3% werewashing it with soap and water, and 67.3% used to dry them inside their houses, which increasedsignificantly after imparting health education to 99%and decreased to 6% respectively. Conclusion:The result of this study indicates that there is a need for the establishment of a comprehensiveschool health education programme with solid familial input. Teachers should be trained to providehealth education about menstruation, its physiology and correct hygienic practices, as theadolescent girls will turn into mothers one day.

BACKGROUND Babies of low birth weight (LBW) include 2,499 g or less weight as stated by WHO. LBW consists of VLBW which is below 1500 g and extremely low birth weight which is lesser than 1000 g. The normal gross weight of the infant at the time of delivery is 2500 - 4200 g. The cause of LBW is preterm birth or a slow prenatal growth rate. The survival rate is determined by the baby’s birth weight. Several risk factors are also associated such as multiple pregnancies, poor nutrition, hypertension, drug addiction or intake of alcohol. It is very necessary to prevent LBW rather than treating it after birth. The present study was done to assess the prevalence of lowbirth-weight babies and its risk factors among postnatal mothers in the Wardha district. METHODS A descriptive research design was undertaken, and 35 postnatal mothers in the Wardha district were selected for the study, the data was collected with the help of a structured questionnaire and a risk factor assessment scale was used for postnatal mothers. RESULTS The result of the study shows the prevalence rate of LBW babies among postnatal mothers as 49.18 %, and there was an assessment of risk factors among postnatal mothers from selected areas and association of prevalence of low birth with selected demographic variables. There was no association of prevalence of lowbirth-weight babies among postnatal mothers in relation to demographic variables. CONCLUSIONS This study concludes that there is a good prevalence of LBW babies but mothers didn’t have adequate knowledge regarding LBW of babies and risk factors that affect the mother as well as the foetus.
