The emergence of the COVID-19 has affected Live TV content production. Televised sporting events have changed competitions calendars and the return has been conditioned by the evolution of the pandemic. In most cases, the presence of the public is not allowed on sports grounds. Major sporting events have been modified in their television coverage subject to the provisions of health authorities. The purpose of this article is to examine the adjustments made in the television production from a representative group of sporting events during the development of the health crisis. It also aims to identify how the innovations brought influence the audiovisual process of contents. An applied methodology was based on the case study. The purpose of this is to take as a reference two specific cases of television adaptations: European football and NBA competitions. Regarding the analysis of the selected data, they were examined from the elements that make up the grammar of television production applied to sports. The results obtained indicate how the integration of innovations during TV broadcasting of major sports events allowed to enhance the audience experience, especially due to the increase in virtual resources

BACKGROUND Public health authorities have been recommending interventions such as physical distancing and face masks, to curtail the transmission of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) within the community. Public perceptions toward such interventions should be identified to enable public health authorities to effectively address valid concerns. The Health Belief Model (HBM) has been used to characterize user-generated content from social media during previous outbreaks, with the aim of understanding the health behaviors of the public. OBJECTIVE This study is aimed at developing and evaluating deep learning–based text classification models for classifying social media content posted during the COVID-19 outbreak, using the four key constructs of the HBM. We will specifically focus on content related to the physical distancing interventions put forth by public health authorities. We intend to test the model with a real-world case study. METHODS The data set for this study was prepared by analyzing Facebook comments that were posted by the public in response to the COVID-19–related posts of three public health authorities: the Ministry of Health of Singapore (MOH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Public Health England. The comments made in the context of physical distancing were manually classified with a Yes/No flag for each of the four HBM constructs: perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, perceived barriers, and perceived benefits. Using a curated data set of 16,752 comments, gated recurrent unit–based recurrent neural network models were trained and validated for text classification. Accuracy and binary cross-entropy loss were used to evaluate the model. Specificity, sensitivity, and balanced accuracy were used to evaluate the classification results in the MOH case study. RESULTS The HBM text classification models achieved mean accuracy rates of 0.92, 0.95, 0.91, and 0.94 for the constructs of perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, and perceived barriers, respectively. In the case study with MOH Facebook comments, specificity was above 96% for all HBM constructs. Sensitivity was 94.3% and 90.9% for perceived severity and perceived benefits, respectively. In addition, sensitivity was 79.6% and 81.5% for perceived susceptibility and perceived barriers, respectively. The classification models were able to accurately predict trends in the prevalence of the constructs for the time period examined in the case study. CONCLUSIONS The deep learning–based text classifiers developed in this study help to determine public perceptions toward physical distancing, using the four key constructs of HBM. Health officials can make use of the classification model to characterize the health behaviors of the public through the lens of social media. In future studies, we intend to extend the model to study public perceptions of other important interventions by public health authorities.

This qualitative study analyzes the Greek government’s crisis management practice and public communication efforts during two waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Integrating both crisis management theories and the World Health Organization’s pandemic control plans, discourse analysis and case study approaches were taken to analyze how Greek’s key government and public health authorities communicated with the public using different frames and crisis response strategies. Evaluations were conducted to assess the Greek government’s crisis communication procedures and the effectiveness of different rhetorical strategies used as evidenced in public briefings and public speeches.

Objectives: As the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to spread and smokeless sports influences sports, large-scale sporting events fascinate international and national host-country athletes and millions of travelers, which has a profound impact on large-scale sports events. Based on the methods of literature, case analysis and induction, this paper analyzes the experience of holding smokeless large-scale sports events in the context of PHEIC through the epidemic background, the measures taken by countries and the results of holding large-scale sports events. The result shows that countries took measures to strengthen surveillance of infectious diseases and be fully prepared for any incident during PHEIC. Though it may need added resources and support, these endeavors were beneficial and formed part of the experience of major events. The successful experience of holding smokeless large-scale sports events in the context of PHEIC should not dissipate with the epidemic abating, but should actively upgrade theconcept of crisis management and explore the development path of smoke-free sports events. The path includes the following: International cooperation is the key to the success of large-scale sports events and potential intervention is an effective means to prevent the spread of epidemics. Risk communication provides effective guidance for the evolution of control and prevention of epidemics. The use of digital technology to monitor the outbreak of diseases in sports activities brings new opportunities for the public health prevention and treatment system, aiming to provide support for today's sports events, and then promote the construction of emergency prevention and control systems for large-scale sports events under the trend of globalization and normalization of the epidemic situation.

Communication during an ongoing crisis is a challenging task that becomes even more demanding during a public health crisis. Early in the start of the pandemic, global leaders called upon the public to reject infodemics and access official sources. This article focuses on the communicative aspects of health services management, with a particular focus on the communication strategy of the Romanian district public health authorities during the COVID-19 lockdown, as seen on official websites and social networks. The 15 most affected districts were selected, according to the officially reported health cases. The issued press releases and the posts on Facebook pages show an uneven experience on the part of district authorities in dealing with public information campaigns. In addition, the results of the study indicate a lack of sustainable communication approaches as well as the need of professional training and strategy in dealing with the public health crisis. From a communication point of view, a strategic approach on behalf of the public health sector is crucial to enhance the preparedness of appropriate institutions to act during emergencies and to respond to the needs of the media and the public with timely, correct, and meaningful information.

Background: After a long, unprecedented pause, sporting events were cautiously resumed in Qatar in September 2020. With the persisting COVID-19 uncertainties, characterizing the COVID-19 risks related to sports activities remains to be examined, making it difficult to give clear messages. This report describes some of the key challenges and opportunities for communicating COVID-19 risks associated with sporting events. Methods: The outbreak investigation report for COVID-19 cases related to the Asian Federation Cup (AFC) Champions League-West hosted in Qatar Sep 14th to Oct 3rd, 2020 was interpreted and taken as a case study. Results: The outbreak investigation reports, which involved approximately 74 COVID-19 cases is shown in and constituted the main subject to communicate the risks of the infection. The investigation teams were engaged in person-to-person communication, reviewing the history of the possible risk exposure and explaining the recommended measures. Clubs’ physicians and delegations besides the local organizing committee seem to have played a pivotal role as a credible source of information to the players and media about the possible case scenarios and the control measures. The yet unclear mode of transmission may have contributed to the poor risk perception and the compliance with the unfamiliar preventive recommendations. Conclusion: The profound evolution of the pandemic has already offered a unique opportunity to overcome the ‘lack of attention’ in the communication of communicable diseases. Using the epidemiological findings to communicate COVID-19 risks during sporting events seemed to be beneficial to explain the virus characteristics, emphasizing the role of the epidemiological approaches to improve the risk perception and the compliance with the public health advice.

The article is based on a critical case study of the BBC’s investigative documentary titled Stadiums of Hate and the public’s response to it. The documentary was broadcasted 11 days before the kickoff of Euro 2012 (UEFA [Union of European Football Associations] European Championships in Football), the first sport mega event hosted in Poland and Ukraine. The main theme was football-related racism and violence allegedly threatening the safety of the fans coming to the tournament. The article follows Amanda Rohloff’s proposal combining the Eliasian conceptual framework of civilizing processes with the moral panics approach to describe the effort to amplify the spiral of public outcry toward the hosts of Euro 2012 in an attempt to modernize and civilize the Eastern European world of football. The moral panics spiral was brought to an end by the tournament which did not justify grim predictions. The article combines analysis of media content and the public statements with interviews conducted with some of the informants of the BBC journalists.

In the United Kingdom, spectator violence at sports events, particularly at football (soccer) matches, is an ancient yet current policing problem. ‘Football hooliganism’ has received considerable academic scrutiny, however the main focus has been on who the hooligans are and why they behave as they do. Other salient issues, for example the policing of spectator violence, have received rather less research attention. One aspect of such policing involves the physical segregation of rival sets of supporters. This paper is an empirical case study of the crowd segregation arrangements adopted for the 2003–2004 Derby1 matches between Southampton and Portsmouth football clubs. This case study outlines the concept of segregation and describes the two stadiums. It then gives a participant observer account of the segregation arrangements and incidents at the matches. Finally, the paper suggests six more general conclusions based upon the case study. Segregation remains necessary and is best achieved by management rather than physical measures. The proximity of the visiting fans coach (bus) arrival point is important, and it is easier to manage the staggered arrival of small groups of fans. What happens outside the ground has a direct effect on what happens inside and experienced stewards are more effective at ‘policing’ fans than the public police service.

Understanding the sociodemographic characteristics and motivations of participants in contemporary sports events is important for event organizers, host cities and tourist destinations who seek to acquire rights to organise sports events of various types. It is also important to know what functions sporting events have for fans—their needs, thanks to passive sports consumption, are now being met. This research was conducted to broaden knowledge about fan motivation of participation in individual high-performance and non-elite sport and to analyse the differences between them. The case study was a running event of mass character (the 6th edition of half-marathon held in Poznań, Poland) and a horseback riding elite event (“Cavaliada”, held in Poznań, Poland). The empirical research among fans of these disciplines conducted during popular running and horseback riding Polish events allowed to characterise the sociodemographic profile of fans of individual mass and elite sports and the motivations of passive sports consumption. The motives were divided into four groups connected with social, experiential, factual and results orientation. We used a standardised interview technique and diagnostic survey method. 1328 sports fans participated in our study (510 fans of half-marathon [non-elite sport] and 818 fans of Cavaliada [high performance sport]). We developed a self-constructed questionnaire according to the motivation typology of Freyer and Gross. Research results indicate that supporters of individual mass and elite sports have thoroughly different motivations. On 14 examined motives, 13 statistically significant differences were found. Moreover, the article presents the division of motivation among female and male supporters, young people, elderly people, local (hosts) and sport tourist supporters. The research has shown what the sociopsychological impact of watching sports competition on fans of various categories is. For example, what is the motivation of sports tourists (N = 764) to participate in mass and elite sports events. We also investigated the influence of participation in sporting events in the level of life satisfaction and the impact of running and horse event in destination image (Poznań) in the opinion of supporters.
