In this article examines the interrelation between the processes of industrialization and urbanization in terms of their impact on the quality of life in cities. The modern city is largely the result of the accelerated development of industry in the XIX - early XX centuries, however, the transition to the postindustrial phase of the development of society, which begins in the second half of the XX century, leads to deindustrialization of urban development. One of the trends of modern urban planning is the reconstruction of industrial zones which is carried out in the form of their adaptive reuse, which avoids many of the costs associated with their radical restructuring, although such a path is not always possible. According to opinions of the authors, the appeal to the idea of adaptive reuse becomes one of the means of revitalizing the urban landscape and, as a result, urban life.

Contemporary urban policies pay great attention to improving the quality of life of the inhabitants. Such an increasing interest in the quality of life is caused by its crucial importance for the location decisions of households and businesses. In recent years, urban development has been largely financed by EU cohesion policy funds. The paper intends to identify the areas in which the quality of life of the inhabitants of large cities in Mazovia has improved thanks to the implementation of cohesion policy. The study took into account large cities in Mazovia with over 100,000 inhabitants, i.e. Warsaw, Radom and Plock. The survey is based on data collected for the research project: ‚The impact of the cohesion policy on urban development in 2007–2013’, provided by the Ministry of Development. This includes in-depth interviews with representatives of units responsible for development strategy in the cities covered by the survey and a questionnaire survey among beneficiaries of projects co-funded by EU funds. An analysis of databases of projects implemented in large cities in Mazovia, financed with the participation of EU funds, as well as a research of literature on the quality of life in cities in Mazovia were also conducted. The results indicate that the inhabitants see the most improvement in the quality of life in connection with better transport in the cities. The quality of life has increased thanks to faster and more comfortable commuting to work, which leaves more time for other activities and spending free time.

The article discusses the concept of human planning proposed by Danish architect Jan Gehl. He criticizes the main trajectory of urban development in the twentieth century and points out that for several decades architects were more concerned about creating space for the free movement of cars. With this approach, the interests of pedestrians are ignored; as a result people are gradually squeezed out of the streets by cars because of streets’ low comfort for them. Gehl suggests revising the priorities of urban planning and creating urban space for pedestrians to intensify social interactions. He believes that creating conditions for walking and increasing the number of public spaces can help to improve citizens’ quality of life. Gehl‘s proposals today become the basis for the reorganization of some cities in the world, including Moscow.

Abstract A nationwide survey of community gardeners found differences in rankings of the importance of community gardens related to quality-of-life perceptions based on Maslow' hierarchy of human needs model. Race, gender, and city sizes affected perceptions. When comparisons were made among the four racial/ethnic divisions, responses to 18 of the 24 questions were found to be statistically different. Community gardens were especially important to African-American and Hispanic gardeners. Male and female gardeners rated quality-of-life benefits from gardens similarly in importance. However, women placed higher value on the importance of saving money and the beauty within the garden. Gardeners in small, medium, and large metropolitan cities had similar quality-of-life perceptions with only 4 of the 24 statement responses showing significant differences. Significant differences were found in 10 of the 24 statement responses between gardeners of the two large cities of Los Angeles and New York. In most cases, mean ratings were higher for gardeners in New York than those in Los Angeles.

GEOREFERENCED INDICATORS OF URBAN QUALITY OF LIFE: possibilities for urban planning  Abstract  This article aims to deepen the debate on the growth of the quality of life theme linked to the urban environment and its possibilities for the urban planning. With exploratory character, through bibliographical and documentary research, the article seeks to define conceptual frameworks on the quality of life and its relationship with a new urban planning model from the social development paradigm and the “City Statute” guidelines (2001), besides discussing ways of operationalizing this concept, basing on experiences of previously existing systems of urban quality of life indicators in Brazil. As a result, it is clear that the concern for quality of life has been a recurring point in discussions regarding the present and future of cities, gaining ground and legitimacy from efforts of conceptual delimitation and tools for its measurement, highlighting the contribution of georeferenced indicators for a better understanding of intra-urban inequalities in many areas. It is believed that the incorporation of this discussion into urban planning can contribute significantly to think and operationalize instruments that can help to direct actions and execution of public policies to improve the living conditions of the population. Keywords: Urban Planning; Indicators; Quality of life. This chapter contributes to the emergent debate about sustainable tourism versus overtourism, in the context of urban development. The study underlines, on one hand, the growing importance of tourism in the historic quarters of Lisbon, and on the other hand the rise of overtourism and its effects on residents' quality of life. Consequently, there is the analysis and debate regarding the policies responses of the Lisbon Council in the framework of an integrated urban rehabilitation in Lisbon's historic quarters and the Lisbon Council Strategy.
