Energy security and sustainability are undeniably the main concerns in combatting climate change. While an immediate call for all-green and renewable energy seems to be impossible due to huge financial implications and inadequate supporting energy structure, an alternative to fossil fuels needs to be established. Natural gas, a naturally occurring fossil gas is a cleaner energy source option compared to other fossil fuels such as coal, bitumen, and diesel. Natural gas makes the best fit for a sustainable renewable energy transition in any country around the globe due to its competitiveness towards other fossil fuels such as coal and its ability to aid the integration of renewables. This review highlights the technological pathways of utilizing natural gas in a transition to sustainable renewable energy systems, with a focus on the natural gas components and resources point of view for ASEAN member states (AMS). Policies that support the development of natural gas as a key alternative energy source in sustainable renewable energy transition would also be reviewed. This review aims to provide a thorough guide to researchers, stakeholders, and policymakers to construct and support efficient, reliable, affordable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly energy systems utilizing the abundant inexpensive natural gas.

The energy transition from fossil fuels to alternative energy sources has important consequences for technological change and resource extraction. We examine these consequences by incorporating a nonrenewable resource and an alternative energy source in a market economy model of endogenous growth through expanding varieties. During the energy transition, technological progress is nonmonotonic over time: It declines initially, starts increasing when the economy approaches the regime shift, and jumps down once the resource stock is exhausted. A moment of peak-oil does no longer necessarily occur, and simultaneous use of the resource and the alternative energy source will take place if the return to innovation becomes too low. Subsidies to research and development (R&D) and to renewables production speed up the energy transition, whereas a tax on fossil fuels postpones the switch to renewable energy.

This chapter is devoted to main tendencies of optimization in photovoltaic (PV) engineering showing the main trends in modern energy transition - the changes in the composition (structure) of primary energy supply, the gradual shift from a traditional (mainly based on fossil fuels) energy to a new stage based on renewable energy systems from history to current stage and to future. The concrete examples (case studies) of optimization PV systems in different concepts of using from power electronics (particularly maximum power point tracking optimization) to implementing geographic information system (GIS) are considered. The chapter shows the gradual shifting optimization from specific quite narrow areas to the new stages of optimization of the very complex energy systems (actually smart grids) based on photovoltaics and also other renewable energy sources and GIS.

The use of transportation residual energy can represent an alternative energy source to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. In specific economic environments, in which the road conditions are not good, the vibration of the vehicles’ masses, represent a potential enormous source for such alternative energy source. In this paper, the conceptual design of an energy-harvesting accessory to be installed in existing suspensions of vehicles, is presented. The principles of operation include an electromagnetic generator, a rectifier and a battery. Validation of the proposed accessory is made through simulation that indicates the feasibility of this device.

Gas hydrates are considered a global phenomenon that, as an unconventional fossil fuel, can be an alternative energy source for the future. Hydrates form spontaneously in permafrosts and marine sediments, where the conditions for their formation are naturally suitable - low temperature and high pressure. The energy of hydrates could replace or supplement the most commonly used fossil fuels today. Hydrates are also an advantageous solution to the problem of natural gas storage. The main part of the experimental equipment operated is a pump, which generates the pressure energy needed to form hydrates. The article deals with the assessment of the effectiveness of the current state and the estimation of losses in the pipelines of the facility.

Wood fuel is becoming increasingly more important as an alternate energy source because of price and shortages of fossil fuels. Furthermore, energy prices are expected to continue to rise in future years (U.S. Dept. of Energy, pp. 56–72). As a result, agribusiness firms in the Southeast are investigating the feasibility, of utilizing wood residues or whole tree green chips for their fuel supply. Some industries may continue to rely partially on their present gas- or oil-fired systems and add a wood-fired boiler as a backup system. The availability of wood as an industrial fuel at a competitive price is one of the major concerns of these firms.

Eco-friendly technologies involved making use of alternative energy source which is abundant to generate renewable energy, reducing the amount of resource which is limited used through the conventional like fossil fuel.  For example renewable resources like sunlight, sea water and co2 which are abundant generating alternative resource like biofuel, solar energy, freshwater and air purification through greenhouse, vegetation and halophytes cultivation stabilize the degraded desert soil and as wind breaks reduce the impact of pollutants on the environment.

This paper presnts biomass as a renewable energy source and defines the resources as well as the ways through biomass energy is converted into fuels, the technologies used for extracting the energy from biomass as well as the advantages and disadvantages that appear by using of biomass as a energy source. In addition,it is known hydrogen is an important alternative energy vector and a bridge to a sustainable way fot the energy future. Hydrogen is an energy carrier and can be obtained by different production technologies from a large variety of primary energy sources. At present, many researches are focused on getting energy from biomass, a sustainable and non-polluting way to replace fossil fuels, because the biomass can be considered as the best option with high potential, which meets energy requirements and could insure fuel supply in the future. Biomass and residual biomass can be used to produce hydrogen rich gas sustainably. Biomass pyrolysis and gasification offers an efficiency and economical route for the renewable hydrogen production and this is also discussed in the paper.
