Thailand is an agricultural country. However, agricultural productivity relies on the heavy use of herbicides, especially paraquat. Paraquat accumulation is emerging as a problem in an ever-growing portion of agricultural land. Paraquat residues are toxic to plants, animals, and aquatic organisms in the environment. Biological remediation is a process that can mitigate agricultural chemical contaminants. One of the interesting bioremediators is bacteria. Not only do certain soil bacteria remediate paraquat, but some of them also possess plant growth-promoting properties, which provide advantages in field application. Thus, this study aimed to screen soil bacteria that could degrade paraquat and, at the same time, promote plant growth. Bacteria were isolated from paraquat-treated agricultural soil in Mueang Kaen Pattana municipality, Chiang Mai province, Thailand. On the basis of morphological and 16S rDNA sequence analyses, the selected bacterium was identified as Bacillus aryabhattai strain MoB09. It is capable of growing in nitrogen-free media. B. aryabhattai growth and paraquat degradation were found to be optimum at pH 7 and 30°C. This selected strain also possessed plant growth-promoting abilities, including indole production, siderophore production, phosphate solubilization, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase activity. Paraquat degradation was also evaluated in pot experiments of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata). It was found that this strain could remediate the paraquat residue in both sterilized and non-sterilized soils. The cowpea plants grown in paraquat-contaminated soil with B. aryabhattai showed longer root and shoot lengths than those grown in soil without bacterial inoculation. In addition, B. aryabhattai also promoted the growth of cowpea under induced drought stress. These results suggested that B. aryabhattai could be applied to mitigate paraquat residue in soil and also to promote plant productivity for the organic crop production.

Coffee is an important, high-value crop because its roasted beans are used to produce popular beverages that are consumed worldwide. Coffee plantations exist in over 70 countries and constitute the main economic activity of approximately 125 million people. Currently, there is global concern regarding the excessive use of agrochemicals and pesticides in agriculture, including coffee crops. This situation has motivated researchers, administrators, and farmers to seek ecologically friendly alternatives to decrease the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. In the last decades, multiple studies of the rhizosphere, at the chemical, physical and biological levels, have improved our understanding of the importance of beneficial microorganisms to plant health and growth. This review aims to summarize the state of the use of plant growth-promoting microorganisms (PGPM) in coffee production, where the most extensively studied microorganisms are beneficial plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). This review also contains information on PGPM, in regard to plantations at different latitudes, isolation techniques, mass multiplication, formulation methods, and the application of PGPM in nurseries, monoculture, and coffee agroforestry systems. Finally, this review focuses on relevant research performed during the last decade that can help us improve sustainable coffee production.

The objective of this work was to study the interactive effect of biochar and plant growth-promoting endophytic bacteria containing 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase and exopolysaccharide activity on mitigating salinity stress in maize (Zea mays L.). The plants were grown in a greenhouse under controlled conditions, and were subjected to separate or combined treatments of biochar (0% and 5%, w/w) and two endophytic bacterial strains (Burkholderia phytofirmans (PsJN) and Enterobacter sp. (FD17)) and salinity stress. The results indicated that salinity significantly decreased the growth of maize, whereas both biochar and inoculation mitigated the negative effects of salinity on maize performance either by decreasing the xylem Na+ concentration ([Na+]xylem) uptake or by maintaining nutrient balance within the plant, especially when the two treatments were applied in combination. Moreover, in biochar-amended saline soil, strain FD17 performed significantly better than did PsJN in reducing [Na+]xylem. Our results suggested that inoculation of plants with endophytic baterial strains along with biochar amendment could be an effective approach for sustaining crop production in salt-affected soils.

Vegetable cultivation is a promising economic activity, and vegetable consumption is important for human health due to the high nutritional content of vegetables. Vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, and several phytochemical compounds. However, the production of vegetables is insufficient to meet the demand of the ever-increasing population. Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) facilitate the growth and production of vegetable crops by acquiring nutrients, producing phytohormones, and protecting them from various detrimental effects. In this review, we highlight well-developed and cutting-edge findings focusing on the role of a PGPR-based bioinoculant formulation in enhancing vegetable crop production. We also discuss the role of PGPR in promoting vegetable crop growth and resisting the adverse effects arising from various abiotic (drought, salinity, heat, heavy metals) and biotic (fungi, bacteria, nematodes, and insect pests) stresses.

Plant-parasitic nematodes have been estimated to annually cause around US $173 billion in damage to plant crops worldwide. Moreover, with global climate change, it has been suggested that the damage to crops from nematodes is likely to increase in the future. Currently, a variety of potentially dangerous and toxic chemical agents are used to limit the damage to crops by plant-parasitic nematodes. As an alternative to chemicals and a more environmentally friendly means of decreasing nematode damage to plants, researchers have begun to examine the possible use of various soil bacteria, including plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB). Here, the current literature on some of the major mechanisms employed by these soil bacteria is examined. It is expected that within the next 5–10 years, as scientists continue to elaborate the mechanisms used by these bacteria, biocontrol soil bacteria will gradually replace the use of chemicals as nematicides.
