The three grouper species most heavily fished for the live reef fish trade (LRFT) in Indonesia are Plectopomus leopardus (greatest catch volume), and two species classified as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List: Plectropomus areolatus and Epinephelus polyphekadion. Understanding the reproductive biology of these fishes is essential for sustainable management, but relevant data are limited. This study aimed to determine reproductive dynamics, so as to inform management measures to maintain the reproductive capacity of these groupers. Grouper gonad samples collected from fish caught for the LRFT were analyzed histologically. Data were also collected from participatory mapping and interviews with fishermen, and underwater monitoring of three known spawning aggregation sites in the Wakatobi National Park, Eastern Indonesia. Based on observed gonad development, the respective lengths and weights at first maturity were: 37.7 cm and 759 g (P. leopardus); 36.65 cm and 771.2 g (P. areolatus); 36.95 cm and 889.9 g (E. polyphekadion). The mean weight of the groupers market-based sampled was higher than the size at first sexual maturity. Sex transition was observed in P. leopardus; sex reversal was not observed in E. polyphekadion, and the sex pattern of P. areolatus was unresolved. Based on the fisher surveys and spawning aggregation monitoring, spawning occurs around the new moon from September to April, with reproductive peaks in November and December. Fisheries management measures that are suggested to sustain grouper stocks include enforcing appropriate size limits, temporal spatial closures (spawning aggregation sites), and a trading ban during the peak spawning season (November–December).

The reproductive biology of the lane snapper, Lutjanus synagris, was evaluated from 770 specimens (434 females and 336 males) obtained on the Abrolhos Bank, eastern Brazil, between May 2005 and October 2007. Total length ranged from 14.7 to 56.0 cm for females and from 16.5 to 54.3 cm for males, with size composition not varying significantly between sexes. Five distinct maturity stages were identified based on macroscopic and histological examination of the gonads. Mean value of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) for females peaked in September and October, with a secondary peak in February and March. Histological analyses confirmed the reproductive cycle inferred by GSI variation. Asynchronous-type ovarian development was observed, and batch fecundity ranged from less than 104,743 oocytes for a 25.5 cm female of to 568,400 oocytes for a 56.0 cm female (250.0 and 2260 g, respectively), with an average of 345,700 oocytes. The reproductive parameters obtained for L. synagris in the Abrolhos Bank were similar to those reported in studies in northern Brazil and the north-west Atlantic. The species is an important fishery resource in the study region, and management measures are needed before the species becomes overfished. Exploitation occurs largely during spawning aggregations, a situation that has caused other lane snapper populations (and congeners) to decline acutely elsewhere. Our results provide support for size limits and seasonal spawning closures on the Abrolhos Bank, a region that sustains artisanal fisheries involving >20,000 fishermen.

The mutable nassa, Tritia mutabilis, a marine gastropod that is widely exploited on the Adriatic coast is an important source of income for small-scale fishermen in the Mediterranean Sea, particularly in the Gulf of Lion. However, the lack of knowledge on the ecology and biology of this species limits our capacities to propose and produce an effective management plan. As a result, stocks are currently declining, especially in Italy. In order to optimize a management plan for this fishery, we designed a study to better characterize the reproductive biology of T. mutabilis, using gonad histology and performing a regular monitoring of population size frequency. The average shell height of individuals during the breeding period was 24 ± 2.7 mm for males and 30 ± 3.7 mm for females. The presence of small females (10 mm) and large males (32 mm) in the whole sample challenged previous assumptions regarding protandry (sex change from male to female). The size at first maturity was estimated for males and females at 17.5 mm and 24.4 mm shell height, respectively. In Italy, current management measures include a minimum conservation reference size of 20 mm in shell height. Therefore, it is likely that many individuals that did not reproduce are being caught, which could partly explain the decline observed, despite conservation measures introduced more than ten years ago. Overall, our study provides some baseline information to establish, in consultation with fishermen, management measures for this small-scale fishery in France.

The Haemulon plumieri is a typical reef-associated and tropical species found in warm and temperate waters of the Western Atlantic. Due to the large fishing effort directed to H. plumieri, the knowledge about its reproductive biology is essential for correct stock management and conservation. The aim of this study was to characterise reproductive biology with a focus on its seasonal variation of gonadal maturation stages, first maturation size and fecundity. Specimens were monthly collected and a total of 119 females and 136 males were analysed. The reproductive cycle of Haemulon plumieri is seasonal, with higher activity between March and May. Size at first maturity (L50) was estimated at 16.86 and 18.55 cm for females and males, respectively. The total fecundity ranged between 17,816 and 120,333 mature oocytes per female and relative fecundity was 235 ± 63 oocyte.g−1 whereas batch fecundity varied between 20 and 25% from total fecundity. Since the species is widely caught, we suggest a closed season from March to May and to establish a minimum catch size of 18.5 cm for both sexes, since there is no evident sexual dimorphism.

The reproductive biology of two aplacental viviparous deep sea sharks, Centroscymnus coelolepis and Centrophorus squamosus has been studied from 1735 and 675 specimens respectively, collected with bottom trawls between 600 and 1400 m depth off the west coast of the British Isles. A macroscopic maturity scale indicates that for both species, size at first maturity is greater in females than in males. In Centroscymnus coelolepis, genital maturity occurs at an average length of ∼86 cm for males and ∼102 cm for females. In Centrophorus squamosus, males are mature near 98 cm and females near 124 cm total length (TL). Smallest juveniles of both species are absent from catches: no specimens of Centroscymnus coelolepis shorter than 58 cm, nor specimens of Centrophorus squamosus shorter than 84 cm have been recorded. Ovarian fecundity is higher in Centroscymnus coelolepis than in Centrophorus squamosus. A maternal supply has been demonstrated for Centroscymnus coelolepis. Litter size has been estimated only in C. coelolepis because no pregnant females of Centrophorus squamosus were recovered. A dwarf embryo and a pair of twins have been observed. Segregation by sexual stage of development shows that immatures are generally found at greater depths than adults.

In April 1995, a spawning aggregation of “northern” Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ) (10 000 t) appeared in Smith Sound, Newfoundland, growing to 26 000 t by year 2000. The origin of the founder year classes (primarily the 1990 and 1992 year classes) and potential for expansion remains controversial, with genetic isolation used to justify reopenings of coastal fisheries. We investigated the origin using historical, demographic, and genetic data. History provided no evidence of large aggregations before 1995. Demographics in the early 1990s suggested few spawners in Smith Sound, but many in the adjacent Bonavista Corridor. The strong 1990 year class was not evident until 1995 and the strong 1992 year class until 1997 (both age 5 and first maturity). Genetic study of six microsatellite loci from 791 cod from overwintering aggregations in Smith Sound and offshore regions indicated little to no differentiation (FST) among southern groups (Smith Sound, Bonavista Corridor, Halibut Channel). These results provide a perspective that these groups comprise a metapopulation and that the Smith Sound aggregation arose not from self-recruitment but immigration. By 2009, the aggregation had dispersed, with large concurrent increases in the Bonavista Corridor.

Abstract Anti-silencing function 1 (ASF1) is an evolutionarily conserved histone H3–H4 chaperone involved in the assembly/disassembly of nucleosome and histone modification. Two paralogous genes, Asf1a and Asf1b, exist in the mouse genome. Asf1a is ubiquitously expressed and its loss causes embryonic lethality. Conversely, Asf1b expression is more restricted and has been less studied. To determine the in vivo function of Asf1b, we generated a Asf1b-deficient mouse line (Asf1bGT(ROSA-βgeo)437) in which expression of the lacZ reporter gene is driven by the Asf1b promoter. Analysis of β-galactosidase activity at early embryonic stages indicated a correlation between Asf1b expression and cell differentiation potential. In the gonads of both male and female, Asf1b expression was specifically detected in the germ cell lineage with a peak expression correlated with meiosis. The viability of Asf1b-null mice suggests that Asf1b is dispensable for mouse development. However, these mice showed reduced reproductive capacity compared with wild-type controls. We present evidence that the timing of meiotic entry and the subsequent gonad development are affected more severely in Asf1b-null female mice than in male mice. In female mice, in addition to subfertility related to altered gamete formation, variable defects compromising the development and/or survival of their offspring were also observed. Altogether, our data indicate the importance of Asf1b expression at the time of meiotic entry, suggesting that chromatin modifications may play a central role in this process.

Ornamental fishes are the most popular pet throughout the world and high demand for these fishes has made them an important component of the world fish trade. India contributes a very meager percentage to the world ornamental fish trade; but considering the high ichthyofaunal diversity it has the potential to compete with the world’s leading ornamental fish producers in the near future. Sundarban Biosphere Reserve has abundant waterbodies with rich fish diversity. Although some research has been carried out on ichthyofaunal resources of the Sundarban; detailed documentation on freshwater indigenous ornamental ichthyofaunal resources of this region is still not available. To fill this knowledge gap, the present study has been conducted to list the indigenous ornamental ichthyofaunal resources of the Sundarban Biosphere Reserve along with their conservation status and their prospective utilization for improved livelihood of local communities. Eighty four species belonging to 11 orders, 28 families and 59 genera were collected from the study area with species representing the order Cypriniformes dominating the ichthyofauna. Nine species have been listed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™. Indigenous fish species of the Sundarban having great potential to support domestic as well as the international ornamental fish trade from India in near future. The ornamental fish species would also be able to generate alternate livelihood options for the impecunious communities of the Sundarban. However, serious concern must also be paid to the conservation of these fish species as some of them are under near threatened categories of IUCN Red list.

Background and Objectives: Marine catfish are abundant in the bays of Tabounsou and Sangareah in Republic of Guinea, but the knowledge on their biology is still scanty. The reproductive biology of Arius latiscutatus Günther, 1864 and A. gigas Boulenger, 1911 was studied through monthly sampling, from January to December 2016. Methodology: Fish were caught using gill nets in several sampling sites. Five gonadal stages were described, based on macroscopic observation of gonad form, size, weight, color and oocyte diameter. Results: The population was dominated by males (61%) in A. latiscutatus and females (53%) in A. gigas, showing a sex-ratio of 1:1.54 (Chi-square, P < 0.05) and 1:0.88 (P > 0.05), respectively. The length-weight relationship was a positive allometry for A. latiscutatus and A. gigas, and males (35.37 and 35.47 cm, respectively) reached first maturity earlier than females (39.7 and 40.8 cm, respectively). Changes in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and in stages of gonadal development showed that A. latiscutatus spawned between April and October, while A. gigas spawned in May to November. The peak of condition factor was observed in June (0.68±0.05) and July (0.55±0.04) in females of A. latiscutatus and A. gigas, respectively. Conclusion: Both species, having only one annual breeding season, A. latiscutatus spawns earlier than A. gigas. Coastal fisheries should be restricted in cold season to preserve the ability of broodstock renewal for these species.

This study provides information on the reproductive biology of the coral catshark caught in the waters around Seribu Islands, Indonesia. A total of 257 coral catsharks were collected from February 2017 to January 2018. The total length of coral catshark ranged from 170 to 585 mm for females and 255-575 mm for males, respectively. The total weight of females ranged from 85 to 640 g and males from 100 to 620 g The sex ratio between females and males was 0.45 and it was not significantly different from the expected 1:1 ratio. The growth pattern of coral catsharks in Seribu Island was negatively allometric and the population was dominated by mature sharks. The mean size at first maturity was estimated to be 557 mm for females and 514 mm for males, based on to the relationship between the proportion between maturity stage and total length. The ovulation season was estimated occur from October to March, whereas September to April was mating season based on monthly variations of gonadosomatic index (GSI) values and the occurrence of egg cases in uterus.
